Remember Corey Nelson, the teammate of Tony Drake, who proclaimed Michigan his leader? Nelson is now an Aggie. His recruitment has been a roller coaster. I wouldn't be so sure that the roller coaster is over, but we'll see.
Corey Nelson committed to A & M
Looking pretty slim on landing a top OLB this year; only two left we're really pursing is Jordan Hicks and Christian Jones. Hicks is going to Texas or OSU; Christian is going to stay in state (FSU leads I believe). Boy, I don't really understand LB recruiting under Rod; guess we're just going to convert safeties to LBs? Whatever works I suppose.
Having three new defensive coordinators and systems in three years is not exactly conducive to attracting a lot of elite defensive talent.
Exactly. Think about how confused we (the respective MGoBlog community) are about what exactly the defensive scheme is going to be and who lines up where despite our constant following of Michigan football. Now imagine how a recruit feels about it. Even with recruiters assuring him that he will be used in a good capacity, how does a recruit know that he will see the field in the OLB capacity that he is expecting. Results will be the assurance top recruits need.
Josh Furman? I know he isn't considered "elite", but he has some pretty sick measureables (combine verified 4.4 40 yard dash, 4.3 shuttle and, IIRC, a 40" VJ). I imagine that he will end up as a WLB as he is 6'3" and about 200 lbs right now and he is still interested in UM.
That's all I got, though...so yeah, LB recruiting has been a bit dissapointing.
We need to shore up the defense, quick
If by quick you mean by signing day in February of next year, then yes, I completely agree with you.
Another tough loss on the defensive side, though as always, I'll believe the kid signs when he faxes in his letter.
Will this one have any affect on his teammate Tony Drake's commitment to Michigan? I don't think there was ever anything formal about a package deal with the two was there?
I've never heard anything about a package deal. Also, as far as I know, Tony Drake's only offer is still from Michigan, so he doesn't really have a choice at this point.
