Hello. Comment voting is back. As as often the case with these things, I just had to do something entirely different to get it to work. Once I modified the approach it was easy, which… computers, man.

The graying out and highlighting are still a work in progress, but we have restored the status quo ante bellum, pre-slashcomments. I'll probably move the voting thing to the right, but I figured I'd let people get a grasp on the new/old status quo before making further changes.

The system:

You need 100 points to vote and start threads. As per before. No change there.

Upvoting is free and provides two points to the upvoted user. Someone posted something you like. Hurray!

Downvoting costs a point and subtracts a point from the downvoted user. Finally: something to spend your points on. It costs a point to downvote a guy in an effort to mitigate the echo-chamber effect; downvoting is not supposed to be disagreement. It also hurts the downvoted user less than upvoting helps him an effort to only excise folks who get more than two-thirds of the site on their bad side. If this is you… I cannot help you.

THERE IS NO LIMIT. bwahahahahahaha (there should probably be a limit. working on that.)

First and foremost, many thanks to Brian for bringing the old system back. Hopefully, this makes the lives of everyone on the site a little easier now that it can self-police a bit, just like it used to back in the day. Christmas came early to MGoBlog, it seems, and it is indeed a nice present to us all.

but aren't I supposed to be able to see how many up/down votes there are for a particular post?  Nothing looks different for me.  Maybe when Brian gets the greyed out thing working I'll see that?

Maybe +100 (votes) and -999? That way, if Chris Perry joins MGoBlog and posts a comment, he can get to 100 points immediately. And if it's an imposter, he's off to Bolivia on the express.

As I said somewhere else, most people only down vote when they disagree, which is dumb, so for anyone who made fun of the guy who made that thread about down voting, Brian just said that guy is right. Too bad most people won't even listen to Brian, you know, the guy who owns this blog.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, sincere thanks, great appreciation, heartfelt gratitude, all of this, and more. Maybe this will help the site and remove gratuitous snark, stupidity, and trolling.

Goes to the person who has gone back into my history and downvoted every comment he could find. How screwed up do you have to be to do that on a day like today? He even downvoted me in the official posbang thread!

Not sure why. Most interesting thing is that the person actually upvoted two old Minnesota-game comments about epilepsy in my family, so he is not, apparently, a total douchebag. But still, hard to grasp the overall motivation.

[EDIT III, December 17: After another attack yesterday, I've once again gone back and upvoted the comments he downvoted, using my old account. So each of his 70+ negs results in a +1 for me...]
