The Commemorative Uniforms Have Landed Comment Count

This was inevitable, I guess. Jib your sail and batten your hats:

Michigan Football Uniform

I am filled with a moderate distaste, so these are probably good as far as alternate uniforms go. I rank them above the infamous MSU bumblebee jerseys. So we've got that going for us unless the gloves…

7932010[1]

…look like that. That brings out the uniformz tag.

Upside: no helmet frippery. No numbers, either, but oddly the announcement says the Alabama uniforms will have them. It's just the rest of the season that won't:

Last season's practice of placing the player numbers on the famed winged helmet will be suspended after the season opener in Dallas.

Aaaand:

Michigan will wear its traditional home and road uniforms for the remainder of the regular season.

No six uniform changes this year, though the "regular season" leaves the door open for Commemorative Bowl Things.

BONUS: They're adding an American flag to the back of the helmet just to clear up any confusion about Michigan football's patriotism.

^^^ THIS.

That's how they used to do it before black and white TV.  Once we had black and white TV, it was too hard to tell the teams apart, so they went with a rule that one of them had to wear white.

But I hear that color TV is supposed to be the next big thing, so I think we can switch back to color on color.

Michigan's and Alabama's colors compliment each other very well and would be awesome.

BTW, this is something I've been advocating over and over that we do for the Michigan - Ohio State game.  That's the way we used to do it.  If you read any of the accounts of the Big House Dedication game against Ohio State in 1927, you hear the descriptions of our blue uniforms and their scarlet uniforms.  Talk about authentic throwback Unis.

These look like generic Arena League getups, but I agree with others that they would probably look ok if the maize shoulder band were changed to white.  I dig the gloves, however, and think they're a definite improvement over the skinny Ms

The uniforms look fine to me.  Nothing to write home about., but in reality, the helmet is what really makes a Michigan uniform unique.  The gloves are tacky, however.

Even without Clark and Fitz, I am finally looking forward to football.  Given all the depressing news about the tragedy at Penn State, I really prefer to talk about the games themselves - win or lose.

These unis are way better than the stupid away jerseys from the Rodriguez error.  At least this is not that sweeping stripe around the lower back.  Those were embarrassing.

Jersey talk aside for a moment, why would we suspend the use of helmet numbers for the rest of the season? As far as I remember the players seemed to really like having them, and shouldn't that be the only thing that matters? It's just a number, let them have it I say.

As far as the actual jersey goes.... for some reason it strikes me as more of a hockey jersey than a football one... could just be me.

...as long as they're well designed, clean, cool (and preferably retro).

So far we are 0/3 in my opinion.

The ND game jerseys grew eventually grew on me so I'm hoping these will look better once I see them. But I highly doubt it.

Thats it. I am officially in the camp of no more stupid "commemorative" or "throwback" unis EVER. We clearly suck at this, while our standard unis are awesome. A curse on the house of Dave Brandon until this rule is adopted.

Well, for a given definition of "traditional" anyway.  By which I assume they mean the stupid belly-horn striped road jersey, which are actually much worse than these ones here.

Brandon would stop doing it. Nobody should fool themselves that the main reason for bringing these out is because the players think they're cool—the main reason is to goose jersey sales, and as long as there is a steady stream of gullible UM fans who will buy anything new regardless of how ridiculous or over-designed it is, we'll keep seeing them.

It attracts attention and he likes attention. Also, recruits and young people (some of which may be future recruits) think these are "cool." I'm willing to bet the majority of our team likes them.

So if recruits like them, if kids like them, if the team likes them, why would DB give a flying f*** what any of us think?

I'm just hearing a whole bunch of get off my lawn talk. They look better than the legacy jerseys and a shit ton of people like them. Fans have 2 options now cry bitch about it or just accept that this is going to be every year going forward. I myself hated the legacy jerseys, but didn't say a word of negativity because young players love this. I can promise you that Shane Morris is excited as hell for the possibility of wearing alternate jerseys. It's about appeasing the new generation and making a buck off of them.

Yes but in 1938 you won't be seen coast to coast. With the fast growth of technology that we have had the 1930's sadly seems as if it's the dark ages to the younger generation. ESPN is constantly talking about Oregon's uniforms, and let us not forget that there is no such thing as bad press. This is what younger kids want.

So if recruits like them, if kids like them, if the team likes them, why would DB give a flying f*** what any of us think?

Because "the kids" would also like all-black uniforms with black-and-silver winged helmets - you know they'd be hee-hee-ing over them and calling them "sick" - and the rich-ass donors (as well as the nickel-and-dime ones) would dry up the money well until they disappeared.  So at some point, yes, he does give a flying fuck.

"For the first time, the Big Ten Conference logo will appear on the Wolverines' jersey .."

Why?  There's enough suck on those things already between the fey shoulders and the vestigial marsupial pouch.

Leave the damn uniforms alone, Brand-on.
