seems ridiculous. This kind of pay should be all about performance. I see no problem with Carroll, but Jabba the Hut as a strong number 2 blows me away, has anyone done LESS with top-level talent in the country?

That's why Weis is gone after this year if Notre Dame and it's finally matured talent stumbles.

This is why they should have fired him last year...this year he's got a cupcake schedule and a senior-laden team and might pull out a respectable year. Then they're stuck with him for a few more shitty years.

On the other hand if they're mediocre or worse no one will be able to complain when they forklift him out the door...

Ironically, his huge contract is probably what has kept him from getting fired. His buyout is so big, that although they don't want to pay 4mil/year for a guy doing a mediocre job, they also don't want to pay 4mil/year to a guy who is no longer their coach, when they'd have to pay close to that much for his replacement. If Chuckles was making 2 mil a year he likely would have been canned after last season.

When Weis was initially hired at ND, I wondered why we couldn't get someone like him at UM. His speech made it sound like ND would be back on top soon. I remember him saying something like "not good enough" a lot, and it seemed like his no-nonsense approach would quickly take ND to their old level. If he was that great in front of the cameras, he must have been even better in interviews.

So, from ND's POV, they were hiring THE coach who would lead them back to the promised land, and it was worth paying him more than anyone else was making if they had to. It retrospect, a lot of coaches owe Weis a note of thanks for driving their salaries so high.

At this point, though, Weis has demonstrated that his true potential will be met next year, when he doesn't have a coaching job anymore and can have his choice of buying a chain of Stacey's, Golden Corral, Bonanza, or whatever other all-you-can-eat franchises are out there.
