Coaching Rumor Mill Picking up again -- UM Headlining it?

I was wondering if anyone else heard the Mark May interview from an Arizona radio station where he says "an insider has informed him that Michigan might be brokering a deal for RR to go to UT or Clemson since his offense fits down there better." I know UT is out now that Kiffin is down there but does Clemson really hold any weight as true? What are all of your thoughts?

Here is the link -- the discussion is in the middle of the broadcast...around the 6 1/2 minute mark or so.

I can think of about a million reasons he'd leave for Clemson... personnel that fit his offense, alums and a fanbase who wouldn't be calling for his head from the moment he got the job, less invasive press, an environment that is much closer to home than cold, liberal Ann Arbor. The arrogance of "Nobody would leave Michigan!" should be a thing of the past, parity is the name of the game.

That said, it's not going to happen.

No, I just don't buy into the notion that there are 5 or 10 programs that are just so much better than anybody else. LSU was a mediocre at best school until Saban came in... I wonder if anyone would turn that job down? Ditto Florida pre-Spurrier or FSU pre-Bowden. If you can't see that parity exists in college football outside of the "traditional powers", especially in an era where every game is on national TV and every school has a chance at a national title... you clearly don't know dick about the game, either.

Well, there are. There is a reason why coaches from that handful of schools leave only when they retire or get fired, but never for another job.

Saban wouldn't have left Michigan for LSU.

Given the look on Weis's face during the halftime interview last night... I would not be the least bit surprised at this.

Mark May made this statement, and Plax had no choice but to shoot himself in order to even the score. Maybe. Mark may still be ahead.

I don't think it's "Michigan arrogance" to say RichRod wouldn't leave right now - it's practicality. I wouldn't go so far as to say no one would leave Michigan (although not many would, as I still think most would consider coaching college football's winningest program one of the ten best jobs in the country), but who would leave it after one year, particularly one that was not unexpected in its badness?

As mentioned above, May's an idiot. So's Plaxico, but that's a different matter entirely.

Brodie, Notre Dame is our evil twin. Leaving Michigan for Clemson would be like leaving Alabama for Wisconsin. Or leaving USC for Missouri. Or Texas for Oregon.

Plus, it''d be the death knell of his credibility and an admittance of defeat. I realize you're trying to be logical about where we are, but we're still way up the ladder from Clemson.

Historically, over many coaching administrations, there are a number of elite football schools. Michigan is one of these. Clemson is not. This is an accepted fact. There are various reasons that may contribute to this phenomenon but there must exist some intrinsic advantages to account for the observed consistency. This is not to say that a new school cannot rise in the ranks because they can. Clemson does not have the history of excellence that Michigan does. Therefore it may be argued Clemson is not as good a job as Michigan. This is based on observation not arrogance.

I do not know RR so I cannot say what he will do. He may leave for Clemson. That would be a very bad decision, however, and RR strikes me as smart man. Presumably, it will never get any worse for RR at Michigan. He has survived the first transition year. If he leaves for Clemson then that is all that will be remembered of his Michigan tenure. He will then undergo another transition year at Clemson. That sequence of events will change him from one of the most admired young coaches in the college ranks to a job hoping, loser with no loyalty. Leaving WVU and last season are a sunk cost. I have to believe RR is looking forward and not backwards. All this talk about poor weather, invasive media, and demanding alumni strikes me as the self loathing of a Michigan fan. RR is a competitor. He had to know much of this would come with the Michigan job. He certainly knew it was cold in A2, for instance. It can be assumed he wants to win on the biggest stage and won’t be dissuaded by one bad season.

Give it to Wheatley!
