Burke Wins Naismith, Completes NPOY Sweep
According to all of Twitter, Trey Burke just finished his clean sweep of the national player of the year awards, adding the Naismith and NABC player of the year honors to a trophy case that already included the Wooden and Robertson awards. For a point guard, this is not a common occurrence:

Not sure who determines which are the "major" awards, but the winner of the Adolph Rupp Trophy has yet to be announced.
...of the Commonwealth Athlectic Club of Kentucky (the award's sponsor), the Adolph F. Rupp Trophy will be awarded at a date and time TBA after the conclusion of the NCAA tournament.

Trey Burke has offiicially entered the Michigan basketball Pantheon by wrapping up the Naismith. A national title would be sweet icing on the cake. Congrats, Trey.
coming back for his sophomore year worked out so well for him. Should be a good example to other potential one-and-done players of the kind of development that can happen with another year in Beilein's program.

Obviously it is more hardware for Burke and UM, but one question I have is why are there so many awards for player of the year? it seems like the best player in the country would get most of them on any given year.
Is it always the case that these awards get doled out in the week leading up to the championship game? Congrats to Trey, and he's as capable as anyone of handling the pressure, but why can't all this wait a week?
This reminds of the 5th grade basketball camp where I won Thunder & Lightning, Dribbling Drill, 3-Point Contest, and Most Layups in One Minute. All the Dairy Queen and McDonalds gift certificates.
I looked at how a team with a player of the year (POY) winner from six major awards (Naismith, AP, Adolph Rupp, Wooden, Oscar Robertson, and NABC) have fared since all six awards have coexisted (1976-1977 season). In those 37 national championship games (NCG), a POY winner competed 11 times. The overall record of the team with a POY winner in those 11 matchups is 7-4, for a winning percentage of 64%.
Some other statistics to note is that since '76-'77, B1G teams have competed in the NCG 11 times, with a record of 5-6. This hides the fact that the last 4 times a B1G team made the NCG, they lost. The last B1G winner was Michigan State in 2000.
Finally, while the B1G overall has not had a stellar record in the NCG, the B1G vs. Big East has fared better, with a 2-1 overall record since '76-'77. The last B1G win vs. the Big East came courtesy of Michigan over Seton Hall in 1989, a game I'm sure more than a few of you fondly remember.

Funny to think of Burke coming off the bench behind Morris. That would have been some unreal depth.
Now is it appropriate to ask if his jersey should be in the rafters once he's done at Michigan?
