Brief Interviews With Attractive Defensive Recruits
Editor's note: Tom's back after a happy hiatus with a roundup on the defensive prospects. Items in blockquotes are direct quotes; items outside are impressions gleaned from Tom's conversations with the below recruits.
In light of the depth chart, defensive players are now the focus of recruiting. Michigan has 19 commits on board and will look to fill the rest of the open spots with defense. Here's an update from most of the recruits left on the board:
Bobby Swigert. He will be visiting for either the Penn State, or Ohio State game. He wants to make a decision relatively soon.
Cullen Christian. Cullen is visiting November 21st, and making his decision on November 24th.
“Michigan still leads.” –Cullen Christian
Michigan is in good position to land Christian, and always have been. A lot of the current commits have been contacting him, letting him know how much Michigan wants him.
Marquis Flowers. He’s focusing on his season, and will start evaluating schools once his season is over. He’s not sure if he’s going to visit Michigan. He said he will probably visit, but he’s not sure.
"Notre Dame is really the only visit I have set up right now. I'm going to make my decision either at the Army All American game, or at signing day. I'm just going to take my time with it." –Marquis Flowers
By the sound of how he was talking, he hasn’t put a lot of stock or time into his recruitment yet.
Rashad Knight. Knight is visiting for the Ohio State game, which is shaping up to be a huge game for recruit visits. He doesn’t have any leaders as of now. He has never been to Michigan before, and wants to wait to see the campus before naming any leaders, which is a good sign for M.
Aramide Olaniyan. He recently took a visit to UNC, and (surprise!) he liked it. Everything is still wide open with him. Until his parents get to see the campus of the schools he’s really interested in, he won’t make a decision.
Josh Furman. Josh just visited Virginia Tech. That scares me a little, and I can’t get a feel for what he’s going to do.
Tony Grimes. Grimes will be visiting with his teammate, Clarence Murphy, for the Ohio State game. They have said before that they both want to go to school together. Michigan is one of few schools that have offered both prospects.
"As of right now, Michigan leads for both myself and Clarence (Murphy)." –Tony Grimes
Grimes will be deciding on signing day, and I’m assuming so will Murphy, otherwise that would ruin the surprise.
John Fulton. He has interest in Michigan. We’re not in his top group, he’s an outside shot, but there’s still a shot. I spoke with him the other day, and didn’t sense that much interest, FWIW.
Dietrich Riley. Will take a visit after his season is done, he’s not sure if it will be official, or not.
"They pretty much call every week, so I definitely know that they're interested. I'm just waiting until everything slows down." –Dietrich Riley
He said he liked that they have shown so much interest. This will be a wait and see. He’s one of the better prospects out there, and is being recruited for both safety and running back.
Some names that might still pop up. Ricardo Allen, Dior Mathis, Sean Parker.
For future reference, particularly for those of us who don't have the names and stats of all the recruits memorized, could you put at least the players' positions and states? Thanks for the nice work, Tom.
For my privacy, my new username is "non-Oriental non-Andrew"
Yeah, I realized I did that, or didn't do that, after I posted it. That was my mistake.

Tom, have you talked to Alex Smith, Kenny Stills, or Brandon Ifill? It looks like you have been in contact with almost all our targets. Are there a few more we are targeting for 2010 you would like to talk to that you haven't had the opportunity yet?
T
I haven't talked to Alex Smith, but I have spoken with the other two. It looks like we're not going to get Brandon Ifill, for now.
He wants a shot at WR, and Maryland is willing to give him the shot.
I'd still like to talk to Sean Parker, CA safety prospect. He's kind of like Marquis Flowers, that he has been relatively quiet.

I think Marvin Robinson is the best looking of them all, no sugarhomocoat.
One thing that I always wonder are what other names are out there that the vast recruiting rumor mill hasn't caught wind of yet. Are there guys who Michigan is talking to that we don't know about? Are there guys where Michigan has received a passing mention but who are really more serious?
I realize we wouldn't know who they would be if this were the case, but I always wonder about that. Call it the "Roundtree principle." Did any of the recruiting rumors say that he was considering switching to Michigan at the last minute or did that sneak under the radar.
I look at the list of players and think we'll be set at CB but would really like to see more in the way of LB or DT on that list. I'm hoping there's someone we're missing who could be a good pick-up.

Tom,
Are there any ILB recruits possible?
All the LB we are recruiting seem to be OLBs or converted safetys.
"Relax you panic monger" -Megatron
As of right now, no. Things always change, so we'll see, but no, not the prototypical MLB you're asking for.
I think we'll get some pretty good defensive recruits for next year's class, though.

any ideas as to who potential guys might be or why said recruits would commit
Trey DePriest!!! That's who I'm hoping.

I've spoken with some recruits from next year's class already, and it's been pretty positive.
I think we have a good chance with Trey DePriest, who's a really good OLB prospect from Ohio.
We already have Greg Brown, obviously.
Delonte Hollowell, DB from Cass Tech is high on us.
An outside chance, but Curtis Grant is a really good LB out of Virginia.
Dwight Trammer, LB from Inkster.
Ron Tanner is a safety from Ohio. Michigan is one of his first three offers. I've spoken with him, he seems to be open, and interested in Michigan. He might end up at OSU, though.
Kris Frost (S), Chris Rock (DE), Doran Grant (DB), Steve Miller (DE),
A lot of these aren't necessarily who I think will commit, but we're in on early.

nice, thanks for the response
I have noticed the apparent lack (or perhaps success) of recruiting ILB's as well. I wonder if this is intentional and we are moving to more quickness and less size in the LB position thus the recruiting of more secondary players which we intend to convert to LB's.
Are there going to be any interviews with unattractive recruits coming up?

I was really hoping this was a volleyball article.

I was really hoping this was a volleyball article.

Rashad Knight thinks UM > OSU. So, that is a start.

I was going to ask what info was out there on Clarence Murphy and whether he was worth the scholarship offer we extended him?
Instead I looked it up
Rivals and Scout both have him listed as a 3 Star DE prospect

Seems like he has potential although likely needs to add some weight.
