Boubacar Cissoko Dismissed Comment Count

Brian

The writing was on the wall for this one, but some playing time against Penn State made it seem like Cissoko had come through his recent issues and would rejoin the team in good standing. Not the case, unfortunately:

Michigan sophomore cornerback Boubacar Cissoko has been kicked off the team.

Coach Rich Rodriguez, through a team official, confirmed Tuesday he dismissed Cissoko for a "violation of team rules."

That's obviously a severe blow to Michigan's already paper-thin secondary, both for this year and going forward.

UPDATE: Details from Wilcher:

Cissoko's high school coach, Thomas Wilcher of Detroit Cass Tech, said Cissoko was dismissed from the team for missing class, missing workouts and missing study table.

"That's what he was suspended for in the first place," Wilcher told The Detroit News. "He's upset. He's going to transfer as long as he can meet the requirements."

Wilcher said Cissoko had a difficult time handling the "social structure" at Michigan.

"He couldn't handle it," Wilcher said. "He's always been a quiet kid. (But) he needs to do what needs to be done as a student-athlete. Nobody is bigger than the program."

He was probably on zero-tolerance and missed something, or somethings, yesterday and or today. I really hope he does manage to transfer somewhere; if he doesn't and he leaves ineligible that's another double-blow to Michigan's APR.

It is important to many that Michigan do things the "right way." Given the sorry state of our secondary, it may have been the better football decision to look the other way and put up with it. As long as the player was given the appropriate opportunity to succeed in school, it appears to have been the right thing to dismiss him - and RichRod did.

As weird as it is, I'm not as worried about how this will affect the team on the field as it will off it. Cissoko had played rather poorly all year, and barring some miraculous turnaround I think he would remain a solid but unspectacular DB for the rest of his time at UM. At this point, it hurts team depth, but there are other guys on the roster and potentially coming in who will help to fill the gap. My bigger concern is two-fold - one, how does this affect that NCAA score each team carries? I know that it is based on retention, and kicking Cissoko off the team certainly won't help those numbers. I know that the team had a little breathing room, but with normal attrition coupled with another loss, how close is the team to possibly being sanctioned? Just wondering. Second, I worry how this might play out with potential recruits, especially at Cass Tech and other local feeder schools. It sounds like RR gave Cissoko numerous opportunities, but you never know if a HS coach or some overzealous reporter (cough, cough) might use this as another tool to attack RR in the press and on the recruiting trail. It will be interesting to see how this plays out going forward, and hopefully it will have a limited impact on players going forward.

Thomas Wilcher, formerly a running back for Bo, is their coach, and his quotes today seemed to indicate he was aware of the problems and, unlike Renaissance's coach, didn't screech that UM was railroading his guy. EDIT: See also Barebain's comment elsewhere in this thread - same general gist. http://mgoblog.com/content/boubacar-cissoko-dismissed#comment-257881

I know RichRod had said more or less explicitly that Turner is redshirting this year, but this has to increase the chances that gets pulled off at some point over the final 4 games, yes?

I hope not. Not for four more games. Unless someone's totally convinced Turner's the difference between beating and not beating Ohio State. Only then would it be worth it. And that's not likely, given that passing is not OSU's strong suit. Why waste Turner's best year at the end of his career in exchange for a slim chance of maybe going to the Alamo Bowl instead of the I*****t Bowl in the second year of rebuilding?

It hasn't been a great week for M with the Molk situation, investigation, BC leaving, and so on. Hope our team will be ready to go Saturday. Any news on where the kid might transfer? I bet Dantonio is calling him as we type.

The more they stay the same. Reminiscent of Johnny Sears. Now, if Michigan can recruits some five star defensive guys so we can get some certainty on defense, that would be nice.

Well I guess we know one thing about RR: he isn't afraid to kick off talent, no matter how bad the blow to the depth. Way to stick to principles (no sarcasm). Cissoko did have a better year last year (looked so much better when he first played), and our depth at DB is hurt further. I wish him him the best.

I go away for a few hours and all hell breaks loose. Dang. On another note, how long before the Freep runs an exclusive story where Boubacar dishes out all the "dirt" on the program?

Very sad when these kids can't get it together. Not for the team, or the program, or W's, but moreso for their futures. To play in these programs is a good opportunity for the NFL, but even if that's not in the cards, just having a scholarship to a top university and the connections you can get through the athletic program and community are priceless. Really sad when a kid isn't mature enough or ready to take advantage of the opportunity. Perhaps RR gives him another chance next year? I remember Lloyd had issues with Chris Perry and Braylon at times, but kind of brought them back from the brink.

I plan to create Kovacs in place of Boo Boo. I kept Ferrara, but I still have Mealer at tackle. He will be moved inside after year one. Being the dork I am, I actually have the players modified to look like their real-life counterparts, gear and all. Pretty crazy, but I had some free time.

we cant have a crooked coach that lets player go because they skipped practice, classes, and study halls! With that kind of heavy handedness...Michigan will not be able to keep up with the Osu, SEC teams of the world. Lets hire a NEW coach, preferably form the SEC, who knows how to treat players properly, and let them do what they want...so long as they perform on Saturday!

Why is everybody siding with Boubacar? Is it because we have little depth?! Depth has NOTHING to do with it. Boubacar was given plenty of chances. He had legal, then academic issues, did not change his attitude and is now suffering the consequences of his actions. Taking the quality of his play or our depth into consideration is completely inconsequential. We should not make concessions based on depth or quality of play when it comes to a player's behavior. RR did the right thing, and I support him 100%.

I have read through all the posts and I don't get the impression many people are siding with boo boo. I just feel really bad for a kid (any kid) that has something like this handed to them and then they blow it. I think back to when I was 18-19 and I can only imagine how hard it would have been for me to always be doing the right things with all the distractions these guys have today. I hope he can straighten things out and find another good university to go to, and this time take full advantage of it. Edit: feeling this way doesn't mean I think RR did the wrong thing, I agree with the decision 100%. It is just sad it had to come to this.

RR definitely did the right thing, there's no question about that. However, It's easy for us to forget that these are still very young kids and the life of a student-athelete is incredibly demanding. Kids make bad decisions sometimes, and it's hard to watch that happen. Hopefully this becomes a turning point for him and he has the opportunity to transfer to a new school, take stock of what has happened, and still make a name for himself playing football and getting his degree. That, after all, is the real point of all this, right?

why they always say that a player was dismised for "violation of team rules". What's the big deal? Why can't they just tell exactly what team rules he violated?

I hate it when these kids waste a chance to get a Michigan degree. I wished, as a child, to play football at Michigan. I was not good enough to play there. This kid was good enough to get a scholarship and get playing time. He had a tremendous opportunity. Knowing where he was, and Michigan's storied program, wasn't enough to realize he had the brass ring. He must know what he gave up for whatever the reason. It is just sad! What a wasted opportunity. Imagine what he tells his kids. "Hey I got booted off of Michigan". Instead of "I played for Michigan". Maybe he'll get another chance and pull a "Brian Griese". RR doesn't seem like a coach who lets kids back on the team once they've been given several chances. What a stupid boo boo!
