Blogpoll Week 6 Comment Count

Brian

Not quite as exciting as last week when the poll anointed a new #1 against the dictates of the conventional wisdom but still fairly exciting:

Rank Team PPB Delta
1 Alabama (50) 24.2 --
2 Florida (43) 23.8 --
3 Texas (4) 23.0 --
4 LSU 19.9 3
5 Virginia Tech 19.8 --
6 Boise State 19.7 2
7 Cincinnati 18.5 1
8 Southern Cal 18.2 --
9 Miami (Florida) 15.5 6
10 TCU 15.3 --

Michigan drops out of the top 25, obviously. Rest of the Blogpoll can be found at CBS Sports; this week's "Justify Your Existence" is pretty impressive.

UPDATE: Here's Tim's final ballot:

Last week's ballot

Just a couple changes from the draft ballot: I moved Florida and Texas down, because their resumes don't (yet) justify being ranked right at the top of the poll. Near the bottom of the poll, I moved Wisconsin up from 25th to 24th, and replaced Kansas with Stanford at the last spot. Although the Cardinal have a loss (on the road to Wake Forest in a noon game), they have wins over UCLA and suddenly-competent Washington, often in dominating fashion. Plus, white running back. The resume chart can be seen on Monday's Draft Ballot.

Dropped Out: Oklahoma (#17), Michigan (#20), UCLA (#21), California (#25).

I'm getting old and my memory never was that good. Any chance each team's won/loss record could be added to the BlogPoll? For some reason, I find that particularly useful when reviewing the results (probably just me, though).

Exactly how in god's holy name to do you justify that monstrosity of a ranking? Cincy has beaten.... Oregon State? Boise has downed Oregon who is looking like the eventual Pac-10 champ and against a common opponent (Fresno State) Cincy squeaked by 28-20 at home while Boise blew them out of the building 51-34 AT FRESNO. Come on Brian, we expect better from you.

Brian doesn't do the Blogpoll vote, I do (as explicitly stated in the post). Boise did have a better win against Fresno, but it's also their second-best win, whereas Cincinnati has 2 games more important to their resume than the Bulldogs. Cincinnati has played a tougher schedule, and gone on the road against tougher teams as well. There is an argument that Boise could be ranked ahead of Cincy, sure, but at that point you're just splitting hairs.

My bad, I apparently can't read bold, underlined, linked print. Dumbass. Tim, I guess you're arguing that Rutgers is significantly better than Bowling Green because, besides beating Oregon State in Covallis (a feat that is less impressive than beating Oregon at Boise, I think you would agree...), their only other, pseudo significant road win is at Rutgers. Examining Rutgers, their resume consists of beating a moribund Maryland team @Maryland (true, Clemson lost there too, BUT UMD needed OT to beat James Madison and was beaten handily at home by a crappy Sun Belt team, Middle Tennessee State); Howard (only convincing win, i.e. margin of victory); and a near loss at home to another pre-eminent Sun Belt Cellar dweller, Florida International. On the other hand, Bowling Green beat the pants off of Troy (they or ULL will be Sun Belt Champ) and came within 7 points of beating Missouri (an undefeated, top 25 squad) at their place. Sure, they lost to Ohio and Marshall, but those were both relatively close games (-7 in each one). I guess what I'm saying here is that the column on the left features one really good Pac 10 squad, a middle of the road WAC team and a middle of the road MAC team with two god awful teams at the bottom. On the right we have a 7-5/8-4 Pac-10 squad, lower tier Big East team who will only get to bowl eligibilty due to scheduling two (count 'em 2) I-AA opponents (Rutgers) and the same other two schools as Boise. The I-AA teams obviosuly cancel each other out, even though in all reality UC-Davis is significantly better than SEMO and last year damn near beat Wisconsin at Wisconsin the last week of the season. Big Point: Cincy hasn't beaten anyone with a snowball's chance in hell of being a top 10 team before this is said and done. Boise has. Ergo, I see your flimsy point about higher quality road wins, but still don't think it's justified as none of the teams in the right hand column have better ceilings than 3-0 Sun Bowl victories. Boise Wins: Cincy Wins: 1. Oregon 1. @Oregon State 2. @Fresno State 2. @Rutgers 3. @Bowling Green 3. Fresno State 4. Miami (OH) 4. @Miami (OH) 5. UC Davis 5. Southeast Missouri State
