Blogpoll Week 14 Draft Ballot Comment Count

Tim

Lots of room for improvement this week (for example, I think Florida State and West Virginia can probably move up, and there are certainly cases to be made for other teams to be included at the bottom of the ballot), so comment away. Resume chart lives here.

- OK State needs to move down.  The Pokes' best wins are pretty ho-hum: a decent Baylor team and a very blech Texas Tech.  Missouri, Nebraska, and probably even Nevada could jump them.

- Arkansas needs to move up, but I can see it hard to rank them above Alabama having lost head-to-head.  However, I think the Hogs have a better resume (beat LSU & South Carolina, both losses for 'Bama).  Plus, 10 wins vs 9.

- VA Tech needs to be higher than probably at least FSU.  Both beat Miami pretty handily, but the key games of note are UNC and NC State -- VT won both those games, whereas FSU lost to both of those teams.

- Was there a mistake on the WVU resume?  I don't see a #1, #4, or #5 win.

- Kind of funny that we could have a win over the Big East champion.  So, uh, we've that got going for us, which is, uh, nice, I guess.

Co-sign the Arkansas jump. I'd be willing them to jump anyone up to Mizzou. They have 3 solid to good wins. That's more than OSU, Mizzou, Nebraska, Nevada, or Alabama.

I'm also thinking A&M could jump 2-3 more spots. They have two solid wins that probably grade out better than the teams right above, and all their losses in the top 15 (or would be top 15).

I'd like to see Hawaii at #25 over UCF. Win over Nevada as the big tie breaker.

First, LSU down and Arkansas up.  Arkansas's #1 win > LSU's #1 win according to rankings.  Also, LSU's #2 win is the same team as Arkansas's #4 win.

Also, I move TCU down, they havent beaten anybody.  Utah = the only ranked team they beat.  Baylor (their number 1 win) is equal to #9 oklahoma's #5 win.  Even though oklahoma lost 1, their total resume is better.  So, I'd bump TCU down to about #7, because they shouldnt be behind a 2 loss team, but i could see behind a 1 loss team.

That's a really bad metric.  Only one of those teams (Baylor) is in a BCS conference.  The other 4 are SDSU, Utah, Air Force and SMU.  Beating 8-4 mid-major teams (or 7-5 in SMU's case) is no better than beating a 6-6 or 7-5 BCS conference team, something every top 10 team has done plenty of.  I believe TCU is a top-10 team, but don't tell me that Stanford or Wisconsin or OSU (or the top 4 or 5 SEC teams) wouldn't be 12-0 pretty easily with TCU's schedule.

On that note, Tim, I don't think Utah deserves to be in the top 25.  Their last 5 games include sneaking by the top/middle of the MWC, and blowouts against TCU and ND(!).  No team that loses to ND should be in the top 25, and Utah has beaten exactly zero teams that even sniff the top 25.  Honestly Michigan's resume is better than Utah's.  We have wins over UConn, ND and Illinois - they lost to ND and Illinois and UConn are better than Utah's best win, an OT win against Pitt.

Don't you have to be compelled to rank a team that beats another team when they have identical records? MSU over Wisc? Nebraska over Mizzou and OK St? Nevada over Boise? I know in the last case you're going to have one team either higher or lower than you should, maybe.

Not necessarily.  Look at the rest of msu's schedule.  Aside from the win over Wisco, their best wins are against the relatively indistinguishable middle of the Big Ten (Michigan, Illinois, Northwestern, PSU).  Wisco, otoh, has beaten osu and Iowa (a team which beat msu).   I'd say Wisco has a slightly better resume.  While just the opponents themselves might not justify a 3 place difference, Wisco has been killing fools lately, while msu has been just getting by.  Advantage: Wisco (as much as I hate to write it).

Shouldn't Arkansas be way up? I'd probably put them in the top 10 at least. Beating LSU and USC probably is better than OSU beating Baylor and TTU. And the TAMU matchups are either equal or in Arkansas' favor. BSU's best wins are VaTech and Hawaii. Oklahoma has some impressive routes, so I'm not sure how you compare those two. I think mostly LSU and Arkansas are comparable, but Arkansas has a better first win (beating a 10-2 team by 8 as opposed to beating a 9-3 team by 3) and has the head-to-head.

-- resume-wise, is it possible that tOSU is the best 1-loss team?  Stanford, Wisco, and Sparty all got resoundly beat (i.e, by 30 points or so) in their respective losses.  TP & co. lost by 12 on the road to a top ten team.  (To be clear, I think Wiscy is actually the best of the four right now, but this is a resume poll.)

-- After the one-loss teams, Arkansas deserves a substantial promotion.  Nevada, LSU, and OkSt should probably be ranked below Mr. Mallett's team.

-Two familiar teams to consider at the bottom of the chart: UConn (7-4, wins over WVU, Pitt, among others) whom I'd ranked 25th or so instead of UCF (and then watch them lose next week to USF) and Notre Dame (which has qualityish wins among its 7, as well as a quality loss -- OT to MSU in East Lansing) who just might be more deserving of a spot than Utah 9whose resume is so cupcake-laden it should be sponsored by Dolly Madison).

With a win vs what is considered their main rivalry game, how does South Carolina move down two spots.  I know this is a resume ballot but doesn't being in the SEC championship on the surface warrent not moving down?

Also in agreement with Arkansas being moved up this list with another big win this weekend.
