Last week's ballot

Dropped Out: Utah (#20), Clemson (#22), North Carolina (#25).

Hastily compiled for the second week in a row, so be constructive with your feedback.

Florida finally beat the hell out of somebody, which had been holding them back with a schedule comparable to the others around them. That (annoyingly) sets up a 1v2 battle in the SEC championship game.

Everything else is pretty straightforward. Penn State and Oklahoma State are basically the same, resume-wise, having lost convincingly to their toughest opposition, but Oklahoma State also dropped a game to Houston, dropping them more.

The end of the poll is muddled as always, so help me out down there.

So Oklahoma State gets slaughtered by their unranked rival in a game that could have all but guaranteed them a BCS birth, and they only drop 1 spot?

Why does VT move up 3 for beating a terrible Virginia team?

I definitely think Utah should be in the pole ahead of Houston and Central. Utah might have three loses but all three were to very good football teams. They played a tough game at Oregon which is a brutal place to play and barely got beat at BYU on saaturday in their rivaly game. Yes they got blown out at TCU, but I think they would still be ranked ahead of Central and Houston. I mean cenrtal really hasn't beat anyone out side of MAC teams and Houston beat OK state but thats it they lost to a pretty bad 4-8 UTEP team.

If you're going to rank Stanford, Arizona, and USC you should also rank Cal, who is at about the same level and whose last two games were wins over Arizona and Stanford.

I'd recommend:

Drop Texas to 5. They really haven't proven themselves compared to the rest of the top 5, and TCU is definitely a better team.
Switch VT and GT. You can't ignore that Head to Head.
Drop OSU and Iowa a spot each. I would say that, in a tough loss to a pretty good WVU team, Pitt doesn't deserve the 3-spot drop, so shift them back up. There are no Big Ten teams that have made a legit top 10 bid.
Drop PSU to 16. They are not a top 15 team. End of story.
Put WVU in the top 25. They deserved it. The win over Pitt was a tough win, and one of their losses was to undefeated Cincy. Find a place for Cal, too, but don't drop Houston out.

I support Central being near the end of the poll. Central's best win (Michigan State) is better than Utah's (Air Force(!)) by leaps and bounds and their losses were to very decent teams (Arizona and Boston College, both on the road). Personally, I think their resume is better than Houston's, despite Houston's 3 BCS wins.

I wouldnt say that Michigan State is that much better than Air Force. State is 6-6 and their best win is over Northwestern, and they got blown out by penn state at home. Air Force lost by 3 to No.4 TCU and almost beat Utah, so Air Force is a pretty good team. And Utahs loses are @ No 7 Oregon, @ No 4 TCU and their worst loss is @ 19 BYU, I think those loses are better than @ Boston College and @ Arizona neither of which are currently ranked teams.

but I would bump LSU over Miami as I think Arkansas is basically = USF, if not a slightly superior squad, and LSU is just the better team (losses coming by an average of 7 pts and they lost their two best RB's, tough situation to deal with). This is more of an "eye of the beholder" argument here.

However, I would also move the three PAC-10 teams ahead of Oklahoma State who has looked like complete dogshit the past two weeks and whose best win is over Texas Tech. No offense to Texas Tech, but USC, Stanford and Oregon State have beaten combinations of each other, Ohio State and Oregon (among others in the top 25). All much better teams than anyone Ok St. has played or even competed with. # of losses doesn't mean as much to me as quality wins. Other than that, though, the poll looks pretty good for how muddled this season has been. Tough to really separate teams in this season.

You don't get to be in the top twenty after you are shut out (and outscored by almost 30) by an unranked team struggling for a winning season. Just no.
