Blogpoll Ballot Week 7 (Draft)

By Brian — October 13th, 2008 at 11:41 AM — 24 comments
Rank Team Delta
1 Alabama --
2 Texas 6
3 Penn State --
4 Southern Cal 2
5 Oklahoma 3
6 Florida 4
7 Georgia --
8 LSU 3
9 Oklahoma State 9
10 Missouri 6
11 California 2
12 Virginia Tech 3
13 Texas Tech 1
14 Brigham Young 5
15 Ohio State 1
16 North Carolina 10
17 Utah --
18 Michigan State 4
19 South Florida --
20 Cincinnati 6
21 Kansas 5
22 Boise State 6
23 Wake Forest 1
24 Pittsburgh 1
25 Northwestern 5

Dropped Out: Vanderbilt (#11), Illinois (#21), Ball State (#25).

Potentially notable movers:

  • BYU continues to drop as it becomes clear how bad UCLA and Washington are and their competition drops to MW-level teams as others reach their conference schedules.
  • North Carolina shoots into the poll after beating Notre Dame, but they were an omission last week and probably should have been around #20.
  • My top three are very debatable; if you've got an argument for Penn State or Texas let me hear it.
  • So too with four through eight… if you've got suggestions in there let me know.

I think OU over USC for sure.  I might slide OU up, as well as Florida (who beat LSU as badly as USC beat OSU, and I have to think that LSU > OSU).

Though I'm skeptical of Texas Tech, I think 13 is too low (though they'll get their chances to prove themselves).  Cal is much too high at 11 i think  (could have something to do with seeing them get beat down by UMD from the first row...), but the whole 11-20 range is a collection of teams I don't know what to do with.

is #1 on my board. At the least, they should be ranked higher than USC on your board as the best 1-loss team.  Their thrashing of a very good LSU team cannot be overstated enough.  They should have put up freaking 60 on that vaunted defense.

LSU has been far from impressive this year and time will show that Florida's win against LSU isn't going to be as impressive as it looks now, the same way that Alabama's dismantling of Clemson looked when it happened.

Florida also lost at home to Ole Miss, while USC's game was at least a road game against an Oregon State team that is at least plausible (the Stanford loss being the only iffy one, and that was mainly turnovers, they severely outgained Stanford).  And you are seriously overrating LSU's defense -- not only did they lose a bunch of guys off of last year's D, but their best lineman sat out this game as well.  In the two weeks prior to this one they gave up 21 to Auburn, 24 to Mississippi State, not exactly rocks of offensive credibility this year.

If you want to apply the transitive property of multiplication to college football, be my guest.  LSU is a great football team, nobody gives a crap if they gave up 21 to Auburn and MissSt gave up 3.  Trying to carry over and contrast results of opponents is weak - it's the kind of crap we had to listen to forever during the Michigan/Florida debate in 06.  It solves nothing, except an ability to read box scores.  We're not better than OSU on the basis that we scored more against Wisky, right?

I generally avoid commenting as a fellow voter, because I feel like as a fellow voter I shouldn't try and influence other ballots.

But this time I can't help myself.  I can't help wondering why LSU should be ranked at all, let alone in the top ten.  They've played three crappy teams, one semi-decent one, and one really good one.  They destroyed two of three crappy teams and kind of muddled their way through the third - you take a look at teams like Okie State and Texas Tech and despite their weak-ass schedules, they've had zero trouble rolling through them.  LSU had a tough time against Auburn, which has been exposed as a mediocre bunch at best.  They got absolutely friggin squashed by Florida.

If Vandy gets booted from the ballot for losing to Mississippi State, then LSU's 10-point win over the same crappy team should be considered pretty suspect.  We all know about Auburn's troubles and that was LSU's signature win.....by five points.  LSU has nothing on the resume, IMO.  LSU's big chance to make a statement came this past week and they flubbed it miserably.  Thinking of the future, I could maybe understand putting LSU around 15th, but on resume alone, I see nothing.

If the regular season is the playoffs, and you are in the top 5 and beat the number #1 team, you should be #1.

I honestly think Bama is sort of overrated and you could argue for them being #3 rather than #1..

Their legit wins are vs Clemson and Georgia. The only legit team Georgia has played is Bama and they lost that game.. Clemson was clearly overrated when Bama played them and are now a 3-loss team.  Meanwhile, you have Texas, who have destroyed everyone they've played(including formerly #1 Oklahoma) and Penn State, who have also done the same(except they've played lesser opponents)..

Keep in mind that Penn State destroyed Wisconsin in their own house. Wisconsin could have easily beat OSU and Michigan had the stars not lined up against them two consecutive Saturdays.

Also, I honestly can't see how you can rank USC over Oklahoma when Oklahoma's only loss is to the current #1 while USC's loss is to an unranked Oregon State. Puts more weigh on the argument that if you want to bomb a game, do it soon because pollsters have terrible hindsight and consider an early horrible loss<a late "good" loss.

Virginia Tech really isn't worthy of a No. 12 ranking -- yet. Although the win over Nebraska was nice, Tech hasn't yet entered the meat of its ACC schedule yet, and until the Hokies win at Florida State and at Miami, I'm going to have some doubts. I'd strongly suggest moving them below tOSU, TT, and BYU. I'm fairly confident that any of those three teams could beat Tech handily right now.

With a rebuilding offense and defense, injuries all over the place, and a sophomore quarterback, Tech may still win the ACC in that conference's down year, but if the Hokies go to a BCS game, they're going to lose big-time to any team not from the Big East. If they face an SEC team in a second-tier bowl like the Chick-fil-A bowl, they're also likely to lose. I really don't think they're worthy of a No. 12 ranking at this point. Wait until after the FSU game, at least, and don't move them up by default, please.

How can you have a 4-1 NC team that squeaked past ND on the last play over a 6-1 MSU team that crushed them?  Especially since you consider MSU's only loss as the #11 team, on a cross country away season opener that was decided by a touchdwon.
