For the 2010 Reopening I think we should try to get a premier opponent for a possible 8:00 ABC game. Would be a bummer to debut the new house with 2 MAC's and a cupcake.
the kind of shoes that light-up with each step. Right ones maize, left ones blue.
No. Black-out. Ever.
Are you the "WHO WANTS FREEEEEE PIIIIIIIZZZZZZAAAAAAA!?!?!?! Guy?"
Not Ever. I bet you'd like some rock n roll at half time instead of the band, too.
yeah, yeah. Marching Band's stupid. Trust me, I've heard it all before.
Well, it's certainly lamer than it has been in past years, that's for sure.
Just curious, but where can I buy tickets to the H&O Fellatioshow? Please disregard if this was just hypothetical.
Why switch the uniforms? I say a night game is a great idea but I think leave the jersey's and helmets. Even if it is a night game the old people won't get drunk and they will just be more pissed at all the people standing and tell us to sit down because we are real fans. Get used to having quite crowds for now unless something is done.
Godlike: We should mate.
Godlike: We should date.
Musket: I just threw up in my mouth.
This is a good idea. We should also start using helmet stickers, get advertisements in the Big House, and oh, those helmet wings gotta go.
I know, right? Why on earth do we have "wings" on our helmets? Are we the Michigan Falcons or something? It would be sweet if we had teeth and eyes on our helmets. Or at least, a sweet block M.
Oh, you know, we just stole it from Princeton, anyway.
Yeah, teeth and eyes on the helmets! And let's get a mascot, too.
I'm hoping the alter the uniforms like Oregon did. Theirs are sweet. We could use real wolverine fur on the shoulder pads.
"We could use real wolverine fur on the shoulder pads."
YES. SOMEONE NEEDS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. NAO.
Didn't we used to have stickers?
Yep. Nothing quite like a traditionalist who doesn't actually know the tradition.
Don't insinuate that I don't know the history. They looked like ass. Why do you think we ditched 'em?
You did say "start using helmet stickers" which implies using them for the first time.
Um, sure dude. I also actually believe that we "stole" the winged helmet from Princeton, too.
I made no comment on what you think, only what you typed. The goal, though, is to accurately convey what think in writing so there can be a meeting of the minds. Instead of getting upset at someone (or multiple people) for getting the wrong impression from your post, just clarify what you meant. If what you intend is different that what we all comprehend, chances are it's on you, not us.
I'm going to go ahead and suggest that "we all" is not a fair distillation of what two people on the internet think, the latter of whom likely saw the initial response and fell in line.
Either way, just assume the word "again" was there.
we didn't steal princeton's helmet, we stole their coach who merely brought the helmet with him! we're not helmet stealers. we're coach stealers
No, no, no, we stole the helmet. Even if Princeton stopped using it immediately after Crisler left and didn't start using it again until about 15 years ago.
When you say "start using" that implies that they hadn't been used previously.
And I thought they were ditched because Carr wanted to put the team before the individual. Maybe he was just too polite to say that they looked terrible?
So you think they looked sweet then?
We had helmet stickers.
We also aware we used to employ Bump Elliott as coach. You wanna bring him back, too?
Night game : yes
messing with the uniforms : no
Black unis? Is this Matt Millen?
Oh, we should start using maize and blue astroturf, too.
ive talk to the assistant AD Bruce Madej about this and he said the players and new staff would love to have night games. The problem he said is all the small things about the gameday experience like the fact that a main parking lot is the golf course which has no lighting. According to them, until they find a better parking alternative where a lot can be lit up and there aren't a bunch of drunk guys wandering around in the dark it won't happen. So somebody rich with a bunch of money should donate for a huge parking lot to be built to make this happen.
Oh yeah the black unis is dumb i forgot that was the main point of this...but night games potentially someday
Really though, I actually would like to see a few night games. Glad to see I'm not the only one in that boat.
hahah ...black unis....but the night game would be crazy
Black is INTIMIDATING. The opponent would be so INTIMIDATED by our INTIMIDATING black uniforms. Black is so INTIMIDATING that lots of teams in many sports have INTIMIDATING black uniforms to INTIMIDATE their opponents.
In fact, so many teams have black alternates that it's become the stupidest of stupid trends. It's worse than the '90s teal craze.
Even stupider at a school that doesn't even have black in its colors.
There is one redeeming part of this idea. The part where the black uniforms are burned. I feel that this is misplaced. They should be burned BEFORE the team runs out of the tunnel. Then they can put on their blue uniforms like Michigan is supposed to. The student section would react all right. If you want them booing all night and throwing rocks through the administration's windows, black is a great idea.
My high school is still stuck in this trend. The football team has completely excised our old color. I always get snears when I sing "black and white" instead of the original "maroon and white" at football games.
Agree and disagree. While that sounds like it would look pretty amazing, I don't think it's right for Michigan. Tradition and all that...
I think that playing at night is bad and changing the uniforms is good. Our players should wear assless chaps because then opponents would be INTIMIDATED to touch them and if they played during the day, I'd be able to watch them more closely.
Chaps are by nature assless.
Agreed. And dare I add, exiled from Michigan nation?
Ban this guy for referring to our fans as "Michigan nation." God I hate when people do that
Ban this guy for trying to ban someone for saying "Michigan nation."
How about "those who follow Michigan athletics and various other activities to some capacity" as an alternative?
Let me rephrase my previous statement, as it is unclear what my joke was aiming for...
Let's ban a guy for trying to conform to other large fan bases that do stupid things like use colors that are not their school colors or proclaim themselves a "nation" when without a doubt, they are not a nation.
I don't have anything against you nor would seriously ask for you to be banned. I just despise the use of "nation" there as it has become cliche by idiot red sox fans and all those who try to imitate them.
I too was joking; no hard feelings.
So the issue stems more from some kind of angst with idiot red sox fans than anything else? That's understandable, most of the one's I know fit that description pretty well.
Calling it a ban-worthy offense is a bit much, but the "___________ Nation" meme does need to be retired. It's annoying.
Big Blue Nation?
Personally, I favor "The Big Blue Wolverine Communal Experience" (TB2WCE).
I hate the nation thing too. Once again, UM does not need any of this crap to be a great program.
"Nation" is what teams that aren't worthy of being national call themselves to delude themselves into thinking they are.
It's not a description; it's a far away, unattainable goal.
"Michigan Wolverines" sounds good enough for me.
your sarcasm meter. I figured "Big Blue Nation" was a dead give-away. I guessed wrong.
I understood, and agree with you.
A night game when we're nationally competitive is a great idea. But never, Never, NEVER mess with the M&B uniforms. That stunt WOULD get RR fired on the spot.
no way they would ever go black, but RR and the players really want to go blue on blue. RR has even talked to big john faulk about it, while there is still some debate going around the change in pants, it is definitaly being disscussed.
aesthetically, I think this would work well for their away uniforms. We have the greatest home uniforms but white jerseys + yellow pants is awful.
what is this yellow color you're referring to? i thought we wore maize...
on a larger note, i wouldnt be totally adverse to some traditions being interrupted for a game here and a game there. Blue pants @ illinois? i could dig it...
yeah, I'd be cool with the blue pants/white jersey combo. I hate when teams wear dark pants and dark tops though. Looks terrible.
Black clashes with our shade of blue. I'm just saying. We can get away with it in the shoes, but thats it. Look, if I'm the only one, I'll shuttup.
Black unis, black astroturf, sans lighting. If I close my eyes I can see it.
Can we invite the Knights of Ni to the knight game?
Blue on Blue would be brutal.. totally WV like. I hate any same color uniforms don't understand the fascination with it. Spartans green on green is awful..Minnesotas is dreadful maroon and maroon ditto V. Tech..why Florida St messes with their uniforms is beyond me...Colorado ruined their unis.
When OSU goes all Scarlet and USC goes all Burgundy I'll allow it until then a thousand times no.
Why don't we just wear Ninja suits?
or Zorro costumes. Who would win - Zorro vs. anonymous ninja?
... not really, but how else will you read a post 30 comments in? But seriously, I hate when people get caught up on the bullshit traditions like jerseys and stuff. The only tradition that matters is that of excellence. That's why I love the number 1 tradition, it's about excellence.
We bring our 11 guys, you bring yours, it doesn't matter what the fuck they wear, what time of day it is, how loud and drunk the student section is, only that one team beats the other team. The team that can do that the most often is the team that builds a tradition worth fighting over. Our winged helmets, the "Big House", the Victors -- do you think anybody would give a shit about these things if we were Kent State?
So you don't think it matters, but you love the number one tradition? Shouldn't it not matter what number they get? How is a number on a jersey any different than wings on the helmet, the colors of the jersey, the song they sing, or the stadium they play in? It's not. The kids get a scholarship to Michigan because they played well in high school (and presumably did good enough in academia). Wide receivers [supposedly] get number one for doing well as an underclassman. That's no different.
Our helmets, our stadium, our fight song are associated with excellence. Why can't you like those?
I don't disagree with the "we should desire to win anywhere and anytime" meme, but to say you love the number one tradition but think the other traditions are bullshit is just hypocritical.
..the number one tradition is a tradition about excellence, which isn't hypocritical, it just further supports my POV. You only get the number after you prove your worth and every person who has worn that number has done so because they have been EXCELLENT. There have been a fair share of mediocre players who have worn the maize and blue, but in recent history only the excellent ones have worn the number 1.
... at the end of the day all I care is about winning (with integrity). That's the only thing that matters and the fuel that powers all other traditions. Believe me, I love the maize and blue, I love winged helmets, I love the Victors, but without winning these things would not stack up to a hill of beans.
Imagine this scenario, and be honest, Michigan changes to black unis, plays rock music, only plays night games, and no winged helmets and they begin winning. They win 40 national championships in the next 80 years. Wouldn't people start talking about the black unis, the night games, the rock and roll. It's a simple fact. The only reason existing traditions are what they are is because of winning.
This is an emotional issue, so I get it, but if you look at it rationally then it becomes clear that the only tradition that should be sacred is that of excellence. When you begin focusing on the non crucial traditions, you lose the focus on the important ones.
I've said my piece, I mean no disrespect, I just want to win. Off to the bar. Peace and go blue forever!
I cosign on the end of this, but I also think that tradition has its place in college football. Even if we ditched several and went to all those horrid things, I think people would still comment on things that are lacking, even if we are winning. That's my opinion, which could be very wrong.
I was just saying that the #1 tradition is just as meaningless earlier, that is all
Still, it would be difficult to love simply a machine. When I was little, I fell in love with the helmets, the song, the stadium and all of it. I wouldn't give up all of the tradition for mere wins, especially considering the tradition and wins all go so well together.
I see where you are coming from though. WInning is the most important tradition here.
I disagree. These kids do well in HIGH SCHOOL. We're not out there offering kids who aren't. How is that any different than a mediocre sophomore or freshman getting to wear the #1? It's happened, RECENTLY.
There have been a few mediocre players to wear #1. Angus Goetz, Robert Dunn, Christopher Grieves, Greg McGurty, Dave Whiteford, and Gregg Willner all make that list. Then you have several wide receivers that didn't "earn" it at all. Instead they were just handed it their freshman year. That list includes Anthony Carter, Derrick Alexander, and David Terrell. The only one who received the number late in his career was Braylon. He is the only one who wore it because he was "EXCELLENT." If I understand the story correctly, Braylon didn't even get it because he was "EXCELLENT," he requested in order to honor those who were good. He wasn't awarded anything.
Since when has wearing the number one recently constitute tradition? It's my understanding that tradition is something that occurs over a long period of time. Do I like the idea of it becoming tradition? Sure. But, if you are to throw the other traditions under the bus, shouldn't you throw all of them?
What I'm saying is hypocritical is to say that all these other traditions are bullshit, but somehow, wearing the number one isn't. According to your previous statement, it shouldn't matter what number you have, you should go out there and beat the opponent. If you're going to ditch other traditions, you should ditch them all. They are all equally meaningless.
Regrettably knowing you don't give a shit what I think and therefore wasting ten minutes to type this,
... I did read your entire post. As per another reply while you were replying to my other reply, I just want them to win (with integrity). That's all. Don't care about anything else, except making sure these kids do get the most out of their educational opportunity. I'm going to go drink now. Bye.
We need to go blue and red so Tate can keep his bitching arm bands.
We already wear blue.
The defense should wear "predator suits" to make them invisible, and the offense should dress like Raider Nation.
This is my first post so please hang with me my peeps......being a die hard michigan fan i noticed that our crowd doesnt get as rowdy as some other schools, namely Georgia, LSU.....i feel our student section and fans need a shot of shiznit in our saturday appetite, maybe schedule a night game one year, i no LC didnt like night games, but imagine having a game in the big house at 8 pm which would give AA all day to get saucey and crazy for a game. Tradition, yes i know, and i love our tradition rich dynasty but...... do you think maybe one year, ONE night game, and i might be drunk right now, but, imagine yours and my wolverines, emerging from the tunnel in black unis, maize letters and numbers trimmed with blue, replace the blue on the winged helmets with black...JUST FOR 1 GAME then we can burn the unis and never see them again,,, depending on how your reactions are i will know if this is a horrible idea. Remember i just think our program needs some Braylon Edwards 5 hour energy drink....love traditions, but lets dust off the Cobb-webs a little
I think our jerseys should include patches explaining grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
it's like a little web that Ty Cobb spun that the childrens get all caught up in.
unless you go to school at Iowa.
This idea is worse than a Jump to Conclusions Mat.
Jump to Conclusions Mats are the shiznit
This idea is dumb.
I kinda like Shrine of the Apocalypse. Oh hell, let's just play Rollerball from now on. James Caan was mas macho.
No night games for me...I'm too on my 25th cup of Irish Breakfast Tea by then.
are you out of your mind. let me guess, you also wear the fake michigan letter jackets from steve and barry's?
Godlike might be trying to address the fact that Oregon has displaced M at the top of the uni pageant in the eyes of many objective fans with shit like metal star (nice) and duck myth winged pads. If you look back at the Rich Brooks era unis of Oregon, somebody is a genius responsible for this extreme makeover. If your are working with green and yellow--white and black can only help.
The M uni does not need a makeover but subtle retrovations and innovations to the basic scheme utilizing technology to make nice looking battlewear every M season. This version of the M helmet is sublime and good for the ages.
I am not INTIMIDATED by the duck bitches. Hail.
How about inverting the helmet colors. The wing is blue and the helmet is maize.
But in all seriousness... We should consummate this "new" stadium on prime time and at night for sure. I don't want to hear Pam Ward talking about our new additions during a snoozer vs. eastern on espn2 at noon.
Bring on WVU, Georgia Tech, Clemson, or another team we seldom (if ever) play. I'd even welcome Hawai'i (Only if they wear those old school rainbow helmets to contrast our reversed helmets)
I know this is all very unrealistic, but it would be neat (and respectable.)
have to worry about being able to raise the bar for your second post.
Black unis? Maybe we should try wearing Scarlet and Gray or Green and White as well...
I'm down. Where do I get my black Michigan jersey?
the *blasphemy* thread. A true Michigan fan would NEVER discard the maize & blue uni...not even for ONE game.
The black uniforms are a great idea, but only if they are debuted in a weeknight game.
Can you say Tuesday night blockbuster vs. UConn? Oh man.
Now if we could just get them to start pumping some Hinder in over the speakers...
The black uniform is a gimmick that OTHER schools resort to when they can't win or inspire fan interest any other way.
THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN DOES NOT NEED A GIMMICK!!!! Not ever, not now, not a million years from now.
They are, after all, THE WINNINGEST PROGRAM IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL.
As for playing at night: what do they have to gain? It's not like they need to sell more tickets.
Playing at night could give us an incredible atmosphere and a better homefield advantage. I'd only do it in September, though (when the weather's almost certain to be warm after the sun goes down).
you want us to dress like Iowa does?
personally i think maize unis would be awesome. maize jerseys with blue numbers and blue pants.
remember Georgia's "blackout"?
they were down 35-0 @ HOME to Bama in the first half.
no thanks. let's maintain the integrity of our great traditions without these dumb gimmicks like one-off Uniform changes.
I'd be in favor of a night game. Definitely no change of uni's though.
Black is not intimidating. It may be a color of authority but primarily what it does when worn is more clearly define the outlines of a persons body thus making he/she look smaller and thinner. White has the same effect in providing stark contrast to ones environment and this is why Penn States evil linebackers always look a little smaller then those on other big ten teams. However red is intimidating, most people and I suppose most bulls react badly to it. For example elevated heart rate and faster breathing, these are not helpful things to be experiencing when making the decision to hit someone. Red also makes the wearer look bigger then he/she might be. We can't wear that color...for obvious reasons. It should be stated that when the world is right and the stars aligned as it once was and someday again shall be everyone will fear the maize and blue. Just as Anthony Morelli how he feels about wing tipped helmets.
And as for a night game the only way to get the Michigan student body really riled up is to find all the weed in Ann Arbor and smoke it yourself. Only then will true drunken mayhem take place and couch’s everywhere will shake in their upholstery.
Only Phelps could smoke all the weed in AA "himself"
