Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick tries to keep Alaska Fairbank's Chad Gehon, right, from scoring during second period action of Saturday, Janaury 22nd's clash between the two teams at UM's Yost Ice Arena.<br />

I'm sorry to descend on you with this but this makes me utterly livid. They are the all-CCHA teams:

First Team
Position Name, Year, School First Totals

F - Reilly Smith (JR, Miami) 10 50
F - Tyler Gron (SR, No. Michigan) 7 42
F - T.J. Tynan (SO, Notre Dame) 5 40
D - Torey Krug (JR, Michigan State) 10 50
D - Chad Billins (SR,, Ferris State) 9 48
G - Taylor Nelson (SR, Ferris State) 6 34

Second Team
F- Justin Florek (SR, No. Michigan) 4 34
F- Cody Kunyk (SO, Alaska) 2 23
F- Jordie Johnston (SR, Ferris State) 3 22
D- Dan DeKeyser (SO, W. Michigan) 2 20
D- Matt Tennyson (JR, W. Michigan) -- 20
G- Shawn Hunwick (SR, Michigan) 2 24

Hunwick got two first place votes at goalie and lost out to Taylor Nelson of Ferris State. In CCHA play Hunwick had a .937 save percentage to Nelson's .927, had a 1.93 GAA to Nelson's 2.08, and played about 430 additional minutes.

You know what they say about the Gong Show and the CCHA: one is an unfunny joke begging to be put out of its misery, and the other was a syndicated 1970s amateur night featuring absurd prizes. It's no wonder that the competent teams all fled as soon as they could find a way to.

Another possibility is that he recceived 2 first place votes, 4 second place votes and 2 third place votes, with 2 coaches leaving him off the ballot entirely.

Actually, if I had to guess, I think that's what happened.  There are certain coaches in this league who would not hesitate to do something like that.

Does the CCHA have a player of the year and if so, are they setting us up for giving Hunwick the player of the year, analogous to Denard getting Offensive MVP but being 3rd team QB or something?

So Red has to be a shoe-in for coach of the year, right? Second in the conference with only one all-conference player, and a 2nd-teamer at that, quite impressive.

that's how coach of the year works.  If you look at football, basketball, or any pro-sport--you'd know that the COY award goes to the coach whose team has the best players, best record, and best statistics.

Coaching, strategy, improvement, and development are explicitly not considered.

I think you're wrong. Especially considering that if you look below in this thread, Don listed that Red has 10 regular season titles, 9 tournament titles and he has exactly 2 CCHA COY awards. That doesn't support your point.

Look at other conferences in other sports. Ron Zook won COY when he took Illinois to the Rose Bowl. Tressel had OSU in the NCG that year.

Or maybe my sarcasm meter isn't working.

The player with better statistics in goals against and save percentage while playing roughly 7 more games for a team, IMO (and in many others) that is less consistent and simply not as good, doesn't get the award?

Some Sour Grapes as RBGoBlue put it seems to be the case.  I'm not familiar with this voting, but is it done by league officials or by media?

This just seems wrong.  Some put Hunwick in the conversation for Hobey, fergodsakes.

Good riddance. Kid is probably the only guy in the conference with a legit shot at the Hobey and he only gets 2 first team votes. Fuck it. He makes MGoBlog's 1st team CCHA.

It's unfortunate Hunwick didn't get more recognized, but I can say that looking back on my athletic careers 1rst team all-conference vs 2nd team all-conference vs not even being recognized didn't make a difference to me. The team championships defined the year as a success or failure. Everything else didn't matter. Hopefully, Hunwick feels the same way and does not care about being slighted.

Oh and Fuck the CCHA

The suits at the gong show--er CCHA--will never convince me Hunwick's second team anything nor will they dissuade my man-crush on him. Suck it suits.

that has made Blasi coach of the year four times for winning two regular season titles, and Jeff Jackson has been COY twice for winning two titles.

Meanwhile, Red has won 10 regular season titles and 9 tournament titles and has been Coach of the Year exactly twice.

Fuck the CCHA.

Dude, I don't know what you're complaining about, they don't give first team honors to undrafted walkons from America.  You crazy!?!  Now if he had those numbers and was a drafted Canadian, Hobie Baker baby!

Hunwick might be the best goaltender the CCHA has had in the last 5-10 years. He has dragged this team to top 5 status periodically throughout the last 2 and a half years. I hate to play the conspiracy card, but how can this not be bitter grapes? The guy has a ton of minutes and has .937 save%! WTF. Go screw yourself CCHA & bitter non-B1Gers

The sour grapes don't just grow at Gong Show HQ. Down here in KC, Frank Haith (MIzzou BBall coach) just finished 3rd in their COY voting.

I would expect this from fan voting, but from supposedly rational adults?
