One of the more obscure ways to make it public...he did it live on the radio with Sam Webb on WTKA.
the just released schedules were a flat-out statement that the B10 doesn't believe SOS will matter in playoff selection
Awesome, he sounds like a heck of a talent.
I'm a little worried about the behavioral issues we keep hearing about... does anyone know whether this is a "in the past" thing (a la Cornelius Jones) or if this is a recurring problem?
I have confidence that our coaches wouldn't have offered him if they thought he would be trouble, but it's still a bit concerning.
These "issues" were brought up in a thread yesterday. Get over it.
If you don't think Rich Rod can handle guys with "behavioral issues," please see Adam (Pac Man) Jones and Chris Henry, who did quite well when under Rich Rod's tutelage at WV. Don't you think that if the player was such a chemistry risk, Rich Rod wouldn't be taking him on and giving him a 4 or 5 year scholarship? I trust the coaches.
"Hey, guys. Don't worry - these guys won't be thugs until they get to the NFL! Instead of damaging our reputation immediately, they'll damage it in 6 or 7 years! In the meantime...wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"
I don't recall Virginia Tech getting raked through the coals while Michael Vick rotted in prison.
And while guys like Chris Henry and Pacman Jones are not the smartest or nicest of people, you can't argue that they were much more behaved in college than they have been in the NFL. I'm tried in vain, but I can't for the life of me find the ESPN article detailing how Barwis was a father figure to Pacman at WVU, doing his best to keep him on the straight and narrow.
Regardless, nothing has ever been substantiated about Austin White. If the worst thing about him is he likes to woof at people on the field, well, a) ahem...Mike Hart, and b) one session with Barwis will quickly make White clam up if it ever becomes an issue at Michigan.
Thanks, that's good to hear. The problem with vague rumors is that they could be anything - if it's just being a little chippy on the field, then BFD.
Edit: I would +1 you for the helpful answer, but IE6 doesn't like the thumbs up/down buttons.
One bad apple is just one bad apple. When there are two high profile cases, it starts to become a bit of a pattern... I've heard a lot of comments in my area (northern Virginia) about how Rodriguez is going to turn Michigan into a team of thugs, just like he did at WVU. And this is coming from WVU fans, PSU fans, Virginia fans, Virginia Tech fans, all types.
I'm not saying any of the stories are or aren't true; I've never heard anything too specific, but I have heard rumors from people who usually know what they're talking about.
My comment was more about the argument that "Pacman and Chris Henry were good while at WVU, just not after that" than about the truthfulness of the White rumors.
And you also have to consider where those comments are coming from. I would hope everybody knows by now not to listen to the majority of WVU fans when they talk about RR. PSU fans aren't much better because that nine game streak UM had on them completely scrambled their minds. And "State Penn" fans are in no position to cast another coach as a recruiter of "thugs".
Regardless, it's pretty obvious (to me, anyway) that that's not what's going to happen at Michigan. We're not going to field a team of criminals, no matter how much the people in East Lansing and Columbus want to believe that we will. It won't happen simply because it won't have to happen. Did RR walk the moral tightrope with guys like Henry, Pacman and Devine at West Virginia? Yeah, I'd say so. Would those types of people fly at Michigan? Absolutely not. But that won't be an issue, because the talent available for him to choose from as Michigan's coach is an ocean compared to West Virginia's puddle.
Michigan started to trail down an unsavory path in the latter Carr years with guys like Carson Butler, Johnny Sears, Chris Richards, Eugene Germany, and even Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington. And those guys were dealt with. Some were kicked to the curb, while others sat out a game against a weak MAC opponent...
Considering that Carson Butler was immediately doghoused by RR after the punch in the ND game, I'm not really concerned with discipline being a major problem going forward.
Agreed.
forget about: kelly baraka and larry harrison jr.
LC took a flyers on a lot of kids and he never got bashed for it. it happens at every school. look at state and what happened with smoker and his problems with the white stuff. i don't remember any one coming down hard on bobby williams and state about that one.
and James Whitley. Not to belabor the point any further, but it seems that we have reached an agreement that Lloyd also took risks on talented yet troubled players, as Rodriguez has. And to me, Rodriguez has done nothing to make me believe he will not be at least an adequate disciplinarian.
And William Peterson. Dude went to four high schools in four years, and then lasted two years here before getting kicked out after his third arrest (sexual assault, assault at a frat party, drug distribution). The weird thing is that he was pretty smart. He was in my Great Books class.
cocaine is a helluva drug
That's chapter 1, would you like to have chapter 2? You better you son of a bitch, I know the way.
Actually, I heard he was doghoused for missing the punch. After watching Threet overthrow and Sheridan underthrow, RichRod was allegedly furious his tight end couldn't complete anything either.
Look at the kids RR has recruited thus far for Michigan. A couple of them do have off the field issues. But the vast majority seem like really good kids. Every FBS school has a few kids who have some issues.
Hoke bitches...Hoke.
WTF? Which of Rod's recruits have off the field issues? We've had a few recruits with academic qualifying issues, but every school runs into this problem. We have had ZERO Rich Rod recruits who have gotten into trouble with the law.
Are you considering him a Carr or Rodriguez recruit? He was suspended for DUI and driving with a suspended license at the beginning of the season.
I don't recall WVU having a terrible record of athlete troubles while Rodriguez was there. Seems to me that he's mostly picking up somewhat undersized but terrifically gifted athletes that are so happy to have a big time offer that they'll work extra hard.
as will wins and losses. IMHO, the only reason RR would be let go before 3 full seasons are over would be if there are persistent and identifiable discipline/character/academic problems with his recruits. As someone who's completely outside the Michigan "family," I think RR has less latitude for that sort of stuff than Carr did, irrespective of whether that's fair or not.
You can compile a pretty long list of players under Moeller and Carr who were "character problems." Some were booted off the team for unspecified rules violations, and some ran afoul of the law and were booted off. Still others were, by many accounts, hardly boy scouts while they were on the team, yet were members in good standing. Guys like David Terrell, Manningham, and Arrington come to mind, yet Carr saw fit to keep them on the team and Carr's reputation as a guard of Michigan's integrity was never seriously in question. Would Rodriguez get a similar benefit of the doubt? Not at this point he won't
I know it's not what you're doing - but I think we should be careful about ANY comparison between Chris Henry, PacMan Jones, and Austin White. Henry and Jones were people with defined misbehaviors (in other words, they were involved in specific incidents) upon going to school. White is not. Issues surrounding Jones and Henry involve criminal behavior. No such rumor exists around White.
The rumor on White is that, basically, at least one person saw fit to write on a message board that they felt he was, essentially, an asshole. That is the personal opinion of someone who met him. But just as not everyone like you or me, not everyone is going to like White. The difference, of course, is that no one cares enough about me to read it if someone writes "Chitownblue is an asshole" on a message board.
So, to be clear: The (unsubstantiated, whisper-campaign-style) rumors on White are, essentially, that he has an ego. Not that he has behavioral problems that will sink the team in a mire of crimes and allegations.

I just hope we get more thugs with the same talents as David Cone and his homeboy ToneC.
'Cause I Bleed Blue...
Nothing wrong with that. Miami stayed fucking teams up...their "thugs" were just hungry crazy bastards that wanted to kill their opponents...I'll take half a dozen please.
I currently live in Winchester, VA (20 min outside West Virginia)...I work with a pharmacist who knows Pat White's mom and few of the WVU players...apparently RRod is a thug himself in the sense that he sleeps around, curses the hell out of his players etc. etc.....But who cares? RR knows what he's doing and is aware of the type of personalities he's bringing in. Brian already touched up on this...the mentality of players his staff gets includes a handful of crazy fuckers that will run all day in probably the hardest S&C program in the country....and come gameday they should be flying all over the place, hitting harder than normal, and just overall be playing out of their minds.
Whoa whoa whoa, let's not start spreading rumors about RR sleeping around that you heard from someone who knows the mom of a player RR used to coach. The man is married. If you want to start a rumor about a recruit who maybe got in a fight in high school, fine. Spreading rumors about a married man having an affair is another story altogether.
I don't have enough cred/pts to start a substantiated rumor....BUT if anyone took that part of my post as the gospel, then forget that sentence...it's a pointless "friend of a friend that's a WVU fan said..." rumor.
POINT IS...I wouldn't be worried about Michigan football going up in flames over the next few years. He's giving us a machine that will be legit contenders not just in the Big Ten but also against the USC's and elite spread teams around the country.
Woah dude, chill. I skimmed that thread yesterday and didn't see anything other than people mentioning that he had an iffy reputation. If there were any other details then I missed them.
As I said, I have faith that the coaches know what they're doing - it doesn't make me suddenly 100% unconcerned, though.
There has been lots of vague, non-specific assertion around White basically being egotistical. But the thing about the internet is that it's really easy to just post random shit you make up, and have it get repeated over and over and over. People here all the time write "my sister's husband works at the same school as _____ and says he's an asshole". Don't pay any mind to people who don't know White, who actually don't know ANYTHING, casting aspersions on his character. I guarantee that the people who made the decision to offer him know more about his character than the people who mindlessly keep repeating bullshit internet gossip.
Note: is it possible he's an asshole? Sure. But idiots posting 10th hand gossip on the internet aren't the authorities. If people don't know something themselves, they should keep their mouths shut.

Well said. This thread is already bleeding with michigan arrogance. Why is it that someone not on the staff, who has never met White (who is a teenager for christ's sake),who has heard "10th hand gossip", think he should post negative comments about a kid's verbal commitment to us? Because the poster is egotistical.
Get the fuck over yourselves. Be happy.
I'm not really seeing the 'Michigan Arrogance' here.
Someone has heard reasons to be doubtful of some of the players RR will most likely recruit and has expressed some concern.
I for one, believe student athletes should still be students and not just athletes. I'm proud of my M degree and don't want to see them stoop to a level of recruiting just based on skill. I'd still like to see some level of personal quality from the players. No DUI thugs beating people up in on campus. I can't say how much that appalls me and I'd rather see those people expelled from the team and out of school if they couldn't have made it in without the athletic interest.
And RR does have a history of recruiting some shady players and some who were phenomenal athletes, but barely able to figure out how to tie their shoes. Who were also not young gentlemen in any way.
Wasting away in Ohio, a Wolverine in a sea of red and grey
You reply to not seeing the arrogance here pretty much sums it up - it was dripping with arrogance. Quite funny actually. Student athletes? yes, some kids come here for an academic education. Most come for a football education. They are students of football. They come to learn a trade just like engineers or mathematicians do. And many of those engineers and mathematicians had behavioral issues in high school too.
I just hate to think my Michigan is above taking a chance on a kid who is only rumored to have had some behavioral problems in his past. I, for one, had many in my teenage years. I am now a PhD student, and a respectable fella I believe. If you think UM has ever been above recruiting players simply rumored of behavioral issues, you need to study some of the history of your beloved program. Major football programs take these sorts of chances on good recruits. All the time.

Even though it was expected, it is nice to hear it come from his mouth. I have learned to not get too excited, though, until they sign the papers.
Both mom & dad are lauding the staff for recruiting them as hard and as well as it did Austin himself. They could not be more complimentary, and coming from two Sparty grads, it's a nice counter to all the dirty language/family values crap that's sprung up again recently.
White has been portrayed by some as sort of a punk, but for a kid he's pretty well-spoken and does not come across at all as a potential problem. The thought occurred to me that it's refreshing for a highly sought-after kid to eschew the gaudy TV press conference in favor of a personal appearance on a local radio show with his parents. FWIW, that doesn't seem to point to a kid with out-of-control ego problems.
A personal TV appearance and a personal radio appearance are about the same thing. I don't think you can determine a kid's ego based on that.
Not even the same f*#king sport - as Jules would say. Choosing to hold a press conference on tv, doing the whole hat selection thing, is waaaay more egotistical than announcing it on Webb's radio show. Not even marginally debatable. Doing it on radio was a classy way to announce - on a radio show that mostly UM fans listen to. Nicely done Austin.
I am really glad to have this kid, I think he will be an asset to our program. And his signing speaks volumes about the recruiting ability of our staff.
Welcome aboard!!!
I'm just saying if Kid A makes a radio announcement and Kid B makes a TV announcement, you can't automatically assume that Kid A is humble and Kid B has a huge ego.
In the strictest sense, you are right. But it is evidence, especially in a discussion about a kid's ego, and just as meaningful as a bunch of 2nd hand rumors.
Many folks are hypersensitive to the kids RR recruits, using the "thug frame" given to them by fans of other programs and from some of RR's players at WVU. Using that frame to pre-judge a single UM recruit is not fair to that recruit. WVU recruiting world is vastly different from UM recruiting. Using the same interpretative frameworks to pre-judge how a recruit will behave does not work. Its a different world over here.
How was that snarky?
