So before people drop negative points on me, know that I was urged to post this thread by several other users last night after much discussion in another thread. If the cause wasn't as noble as it is and the fundraiser as relevant to Michigan sports fans (which I believe is why we're here) as it is, I would not be laying this out. Follow the link and read the explanation below before you start screaming "SPAM!"
I wanted to get the word out there for both Michigan sports fans looking for some cool Michigan Football memorabilia for themselves or as a gift for others (surprise, the holidays aren't that far away) and those just looking to do a good deed. In 2007 a group of 12 UofM alums including Tyrone Wheatley started a scholarship for Michigan students who either have cancer or whose family members have cancer and named it after a Michigan professor whom they all had classes with who died of esophageal cancer back in 2001. To raise money for the scholarship, an online "ebay-style" auction is being held from now through the end of the 2009 football season at http://www.umich.cmarket.com . If you proclaim to be a Michigan sports fan, I think you'll find it difficult to not find something you'll like and needless to say, the cause is noble and needed. I speak from experience as my own sister had to battle through a Non-Hodgkins lymphoma while she was an undergrad at Michigan and I know the emotional, physical and financial difficulty it brought to our family. If we can make it a little easier for a Michigan man (or woman) to fulfill their education while dealing with cancer, it goes without saying that is a good thing.
No shortage of Michigan heroes represented:
Anthony Carter http://www.cmarket.com/auction/item/Item.action?id=67567494
Chad Henne http://www.cmarket.com/auction/item/Item.action?id=67232828
Charles Woodson http://www.cmarket.com/auction/item/Item.action?id=71906461
LaMarr Woodley http://www.cmarket.com/auction/item/Item.action?id=68350473
You name it. Many items are one-of-a-kind and several are multi-signed and there is a lot more to come so check back often in the next three months. This morning alone one of the committee members was meeting with Mark Messner and Greg McMurtry. We'll also have some unique Michigan Experiences that we're working on.
So thank you for at least reading this long post and hopefully checking out the link and, if the economy has still left you with some disposable income, maybe bidding on some items for the sake of some deserving Michigan undergraduates.
FINALLY, if there is anything you see on the auction site that you think is particularly cool, lame, you would like to see up for grabs (that is realistic) or have any commentary or questions about, please leave it in this thread. I'm going out of state for the weekend but I'll get back to it on Tuesday. This is pretty new to the people organizing it and we're still crawling in the dark but we do have access to the players, many of whom took classes with and fondly remember Professor Maloy, and we appreciate feedback.
Always Go Blue.
