Auburn Meltdown…

And people though our coaching search was a circus…The Auburn A.D. makes Bill Martin look like a mastermind…

http://www.trackemtigers.com/ Notes: “To say this move is shocking is an understatement. For many Auburn fans, this is a worst case scenario. There appears to be little logic in the choice”.

http://www.auburntron.com/ Notes: “Today, I am not proud to be an Auburn Tiger - and I blame you Jay Jacobs. No recruits want to hear what Gene Chizik has to say after Saban, Meyer, Richt, Nutt, and now Mullen sit down with them. Winless in the Big 12. Marginal recruiter, at best. No personality. No charisma. No national recognition. Nothing positive emerges from this. This proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that we have the worst, most inept, most pathetic athletic department, combined with the most damaging outside booster influence in all of college football. And apparently, zero leadership at the top of the university who could step up and stop this monumental blunder. We hired our absolute worst candidate”.

------------------

Side note.

LET IT BE SAID. Rich Rodriguez is a great hire for Michigan.

Rich Rodriguez will retire as a beloved and successful Michigan coach. He will go down as a successful and transformation hire for Michigan! (yeah, I see nothing but maze and blue)

Go Blue.

Because of people who are

Because of people who are screaming about the sky falling after a 3-9 season, when in all actuality we could've gone out and done something stupid- like Auburn just did.

I'm not sure about Debord ever being a good OC, but, he was well respected as an O-line coach.

Silver Lining

Iowa State is the perfect job for Turner Gill, so there will be some justice at least.

OT - What the fuck is the Turner Gill boner? I understand, Buffalo ain't a fucking hot-spot for college football, but they guy has experience as a good coordinator (not unlike, say, Gene Chizik) and a 7-5 year in the MAC. Let's breathe a little.

I agree, I don't get why he's considered "ZOMG!"... but Buffalo was in D-III a decade ago and won 5 games over 5 seasons before he got there. Pretty big turn around.

A conference title in which

A conference title in which he went 7-5, in the MAC, and needing 7 OT's for 3 of those wins. A season in which his team was both out-scored on the year (prior to their 13th game) and out-gained on the year (including the 13th game), and was +15 on turnovers (including an ultra-flukey +10 on fumbles).

I'm not trying to say he's not good. I'm just saying there is rooms for skepticism here. So, as a wise man once said - If you want to crown his ass, then crown him.

i agree with you to an

i agree with you to an extent. but as for 3 of those wins coming in close games... well, if we had done the same and gone 6-6 instead of 3-9 there wouldn't be so much backlash against the program. that would've been a big difference.

To quote the WWE's "APA"

Damn....

This is worse than Mike Debord. At least DeBord sniffed a conference win while at CMU. This is hiring Gus the Field Goal Kicking Mule. Although that may be generous, since Gus the FG Kicking Mule actually won a game or two. They would have been better hiring the Fonz, b/c at least he got his team to a bowl game, granted it was a movie with Adam Sandler, but still...

Wow.

I just started reading the auburn boards... it's like someone just took their favorite dog, shot him between the eyes, and fed him to a bear right in front them. Kind of cathartic really... in a sick, "I really like Saw IV" kind of way.

Terrible hire

I can't remeber the last time a coach sucked horribly in a major conference and then got a coaching upgrade at well respected school in a better conference.

It is not that hard to win at ISU (Mccarthy, [I think that was as his name] was taking to ISU to bowl games and they ran him out of town).

In other news the stock on Chizik nickles must have plummeted...

Not so fast my friend

Erickson went 9-3 his last season at Wazzou and won their first bowl game since 1931 before he took the Miami job. His first year at Wazzou was 3-7-1 and second year was the 9-3 season. Plus it was at Wazzou which historically, sucks donkey balls.

Mea culpa

Actually you were partly right... while the Erickson Wazzou-Miami transfer is correct as I wrote it, Erickson did perform the losing season at crap school to respected BCS program leap when he went from Idaho (4-8 in 2006) to Arizona St in 2007. He did however have a 4-3 record at one point in 2006 before losing 5 straigh to end the season, still performing higher than Chizik.

Ericson despite tanking at Idaho,

had a history of success as a head coach before he went to ASU, so it wasn't a shocking hire.

This chizik move just reeks of desperation.

SJU,

Thay went 0-8 in the Big 12, and didn't play Oklahoma, Texas OR Texas Tech. He's 5-19 over the last two years. Debord was the suck, but it doesn't get much worse.

Iowa State is an impossible

Iowa State is an impossible place to recruit and there is no money. It's probably the worst job in the BCS... I think the best coach there ever was Earle Bruce, and he made the Hall of Fame.

Iowa state is not that bad of a

program, from 2000-2005 they only had one losing season and had a 9 win season. Mccarney took them to bowl games in 5 out of 6 seasons during this time.

Not saying they are the shit or anything, but you should no go winless in the b12 when Baylor is on your schedule.

Our coaching search was actually very typical. It took a few weeks, there was a bunch of rumormongering and names thrown all over the place, and people freaked out. Then we ended up hiring a guy that we didn't expect to be available in the first place, and almost everyone was satisfied. It only seemed like a circus to us because we weren't used to going through them, given that our last real football search happened 39 years earlier - and because our basketball search earlier in the year went unusually smoothly.
