Aubrey Solomon Decommits Comment Count

Ace

So it turns out the Georgia 247 post was the one to read into.

As Solomon said in the note, Michigan will get a chance to bring him back into the fold when he takes an official visit this fall. In the interim, the coaches will continue to push hard for four-star UT DT Jay Tufele, and we may see some names that haven't been mentioned around here in a while—Popo Aumavae comes to mind—pop back up on the board.

EDIT: 247 has an article up on Solomon's decommitment, and, well...

"A day or two ago, they sent my mom a card thanking us for going to the Michigan bbq, but we never went," Solomon said. "I do not know which recruit they were talking to, but it was not me. It was just a little heartbreaking, for me to supposedly be so high on their list, for them to confuse me with someone else. Plus they spelled both of my names wrong after I told them, but that was not the main issue. I guess they do not have tabs on me."

...that's not ideal. Solomon mentions his mom "loves" Georgia and that he didn't consult her before making his initial commitment. Even with the return trip scheduled, Georgia looks like a big favorite now.

"So you scarp a full scholarship and your future on a mistake in an email?"

When your best date prospect is your hand - you'll put up with Kate Upton even if she acts like a shrew.

If you've got a room with Kate Upton, Megan Fox, Giselle Bundchen, and Selena Gomez all beggin for your attention - you aren't going to put up with any whining.

I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh already had a phone conversation with Aubrey after hearing about the snafu. While it does suck, this doesn't really come as a surprise. Recruiting is so fluid. Thankfully we'll have football in less than 2 weeks to drown out the recruiting noise.

Not a big deal. This stuff happens all the time. There are a couple hundred other kids out there to take his spot. If I really wanted to play for Michigan they could call me Dr. Fantasy Doodlenutz and I'd be cool. The people calling for a firing are hilarious. Get a damn grip.

Wish him luck, but this was always going to be a commitment that had a chance to change.  I assume he goes to GA; UM will survive and both continue to recruit him and look for other options.

I do wonder how much that recruiting note, if it's real, really factored in.  I am fairly certain kids this high-profile get a bunch of bulk stuff.  I doubt that is a huge deal to someone who wants to remain committed.

In a business (and yes, unfortunately this applies to college football), it's the details which set you apart from your competition. Send a client a thank you card for a gift not sent? Yeah... You have to get these things right. When Michigan is hiring team "moms" I think somebody dropped the ball big time here. To be perceived as the best you cannot come off like a form letter factory.

Chill out bud. The best in the business make mistakes. No one and no organization is ever going to be perfect. Strive for that but don't throw your arms up when mistakes happen. In the grand scheme of things, especially recruiting, this is about as minor as it can get.

His Mom wants him to stay close to home and play for Georgia, and that's where I think he will end up. All Harbaugh has to do is win and those last minute high end recruits may come a knocking early next year.

He did not decommit because of a letter. I can promise you that. He was going to decommit for a while. Any kid who decommits over something like this is not a kid you want. But I don't believe that happened.

Given that the note had his name wrong, and the facts wrong, perhaps he just received someone else's thank you card.  Did we misspell Aubrey as "Andre" and Solomon as "Seldon," for instance?

1 - Solomon did not decommit because of this card.  He decommitted because he has changed his mind between Georgia and Michigan and is just using the card incident as a means to act upon this changed decision.

2 - Solomon is not even going to consider U of M again.  Like when you break up with a girl, but compliment her while doing so to let her down easy.

There is a much greater chance of a decommit as the local schools exert pressure on the recruit and their families. Texas in particular has been brutal for us in that regard. It's just so hard to pull top kids like this from the South. The last thing you need is a total fuck up like with the card. Yikes.

If this kid really wanted to go to michigan, he would not let a situation like this cause his decommitment. This is the new era of recruiting. We cannot get either high or low when these kids commit or decommit. I trust Harbaugh and his staff will tighten things up if indeed this really happened. More importantly I trust this staff to turn any kid that really wants to play for them into a productive player. We took it on the chin today but this season will still be magical. Win the B1G and beat freakin MSU and OSU and we won't even remember this day.

True, but what percentage of people would "really want to go to" a program which doesn't realize if you are at an event or not? Two different ways of framing the issue. Both really understandable. I don't know if this would make me decommit, but it would really make me consider taking a look around.

My initial thought was, if true, honest mistake. Maybe I'm different but that may annoy me but it wouldn't change my mind on anything. Solomon wasn't blue and this is a good excuse to change his mind. Simple as that.

Mark Dantonio is probably flying to his house right now....

my entire program around that. Let me tell you the first time they disrespected me....."

Here is the question,    was it a handwritten screwup (awkward), or was his name put in the wrong file used for a mail merge and computer printed form letter.   In which case you yes it's a screw up, but it's by some admin person somewhere, not by the actual coaches in touch with this recruit.    Details, we need details.

If this guy is heartbroken because of the mistaken thank you note, he might find the rest of life to be a little challenging. I had an ex-fiancée who got mad at me once because, according to her, I wasn't paying enough attention to her when...she was asleep. According to her, I was supposed to come by every so often while she was sleeping (she was a nurse who worked the graveyard shift, so slept during the day) and give her a hug, or something like that. Because she was the best piece of ass I ever had, and I've had 'em all over the world, I actually went along with that BS for a while. Aubrey Solomon reminds me of my ex-fiancée, except much larger and much less attractive.

From my (admittedly not worldwide such as yours) experience on the subject, it seems to me that the ones that rank among the 'best" so to say seem to always know this and decide they must balance this out by being completely intolerable in some other way.

I never got to ex-fiancée status with mine, but at least I avoided ex-husband status.  She's currently working on husband #3, and yet there is some irrational part of me that still wonders if somehow I could have made it work.........

Something smells funny to me.  I would be interested in what the return address was on Mr. Solomon's mailer.

Somebody call Detective Brown.  He'll get to the bottom of this.

I'm confused.  Does no one pick up a phone anymore to work through things?  Did that even happen here, or is the default these days to go scorched earth?

I read before he committed that his mother is 100% Georgia. They sent her a birthday card or something earlier this year and she cried because it was such a sweet gesture. He gone.

1. This seems like one of the most sincere decommittment posts I ever read.  I don't know why, but it seems like when you tout some of the benefits to the school, it reads differently.

2. Also, the kid has talked so glowingly about our school that I could never say a bad thing about the kid.  I hope his mom can make the trip up here just so she can lay eyes on what he saw.

Quite honestly Im not sure how some recruits can be so offended by not getting the appropriate type of attention. Gone are the days when kids would typically pick a school based on academics, program success, and a chance to go to the NFL. Its starting to become more and more about retweets, cool graphics, and coaches treating the recruit like a god.
