Any one else starting to get a little worried about CB recruiting?

Any one else starting to get a little worried about CB recruiting?

Given the last two years of recruitjng, DE is still Michigan's most pressing need - let's not  forget that even DeQuinta Jones is probably a DT - but it seems like Michigan is at least on some big DEs in 2009.  It might not get any big names, but I have no idea what more it could do.

CBs however, are a bit of a problem I think.  From last year's class, it seems that three-star JT Floyld may be more of a safety (only time will tell, I suppose), leaving only Cissoko.  This year,  Justin Turner would be a huge corner at 6-2.  Even more likey that Floyd to end up at safety.

Assuming we miss out on Darius Winston, where are we with CB recruiting this year?  Whiffing on Winston, Gabe Lynn, CJ Barnett, Brandon McGee, Cliff Harris, DJ Hunter, Corey Brown, Terry Shankle, Darrell Givens, Travis Hawkins and David Gordon - all CB recruiting Michigan was on at some point - who have either comitted elsewhere or very well could - leaves Michigan with who exactly?

- Three-stars Mike Edwards, Demontre Hurst? Tony Graham?

- Maybe Mywan Jackson, Marsalis Teague or Javanti Sparrow?

- Angelo Hadley, who, like JT Floyd, is a three-star who's probably a Safety?

- DeWayne Peace maybe moves to CB?

I don't like the way this seems to be unfolding.

We have 2 sophomores and 2 freshmen in our top 5 CB's (Warren, Woolfolk, Cissoko, Floyd) and another 4-star coming in next year.

at CB during Michigan's camp and I think he probably ends up there. like chitownblue said our guys are young but still very good, i'm failing to see why we should be concerned.

So we pull a top 5 rated CB in back to back years and now people are sweating the CB position? I still think we land Winston, and even if we don't pull in a top 15-20 CB this year, we'll be alright bringing in a few sleeper prospects (Peace, possibly Mywan Jackson). Alot of people think that Turner will be a safety, but I believe he'll be a CB when it's all said and done. Several posters have stated that Shafer likes hard hitting, big CBs, and Turner would thrive in this position.

Warren and Cissoko are great recruiting pickips. Stipulated. After that, we have very little else in terms of known commodities: Floyd is probably not a CB and is, nevertheless a three-star. Justin Turner almost definitely is a safety. Woolfolk wasn't highly rathed. Any three-star could turn into a competent to very good CB, but how would I know? Michigan can always sign three-star CBs. That's never a worry. And Michigan sites will always say nice things about each of them: of course. I have nothing to go on but recruiting rankings and capsules. If anybody has inside info, like MGoObes' above, on Peace, great! I'll factor that in. I'm not saying the sky is falling or anything, just that, for those of us who follow recruiting, CB seems like a pretty big need given the info we have on all of these guys. So, right now: two CBs about whom we feel comfortable in the last three classes combined. I love the optimism on Winston, and I hope we get him, too, but, who knows? Just assume we don't get him for one second: it seems like we have very few other highly-rated options.

Darius Winston 5*, #4 rated CB in the class. Has us as leader, and hasn't even visited yet. 2. Travis Hawkins 4*, #6 rated DB in the class. Teammate of DE Jason Ankrah, who we're also recruiting. 3. Dre Kirkpatrick 5* #3 rated CB in the class. Loooongshot, but plans an official this fall. 4. Gabe Lynn, 5*, #2 rated corner in the class. A quote from Friday July 25th interview: "I am interested in Michigan -- they are still in there as far as a school that I am considering.” I'd bet we land at least one. Winston and Hawkins seem to love us. PLUS Shafer is supposed to be one of the best DB coaches in the nation- he'll coach up some 3*s.

WE ARE GOING TO BE A MACHINE.

Stevie Brown is not a CB, though, he's a safety.  And you forgot Michael Williams, also a safety prospect, often ompared to Brandon Harrison as a nickel type guy.  While ROgers is back at WR, it seems we're still in it for Myles and/or  Mike Jones still.  I'm not really concerned about safety at all.  As you've pointed out, we have a lot of guys there.

However, you've only got two corners listed in the last three classes plus a three-star legacy committ in Wollfolk and Peace.  That is what worries me.  In this day and age, 2-4 solid corners are needed.  I sure hope we land Winston, Hawkins, Kirkpatrick or Lynn.  But what if we don't?  It's a very good possiility.  I don't think we should consider ourselves the leader for any of those guys.

Thanks again for the great summary!

If we don't land one of those four guys I'm sure we'll make due with a top 150 or top 200 guy instead of a top 50 guy. And while Brown is a safety now, that's been due to need- he was recruited as a corner. A few of the others we're on: 3* Josh Robinson from FL and Mywan Jackson, a 3* WR CB also from FL. Bottom line is we have Trent and Warren this year, then Warren next year and possibly the year after. There's a lot of coaching/playing and recruiting to be done between now and then.

WE ARE GOING TO BE A MACHINE.

Just an big Michigan fan. He co-opted my name. He's "superman." Get it? As I mentioned in the original post, DE is the biggest need. Not the issue here. I love the faith in our ability to turn three stars into great corners. I hope we're all right. We should just all stop following recruiting then. Michigan can get three star corners every year.

This sort of question seems to get asked every year (on one of the major M sites). The only thing that changes is the position. I've largely stopped following recruiting, as I've come to the conclusion that the Michigan name draws enough interest that we'll never really be hurting for talent. Things will work themselves out.
