  • wtf

Fall practice started yesterday. In marked contrast to years previous there was significant access granted, with reporters allowed to attend the first 30 minutes of the practice; there was also a press conference. Also in marked contrast to years previous, this apparently happened:

I'm trying to envision Lloyd Carr chest-bumping (or, according to the Free Press, "chest-butting") the starting running back. It's not working.

News items from Rodriguez's press conference:

  • Mysterious long snapper George Morales, the last recruit to commit to Lloyd Carr, was present and accounted for today. Rodriguez even clarified his status: he's on scholarship(!) and competing for the backup(!!) long snapping job. The immediate reaction is, of course, WTF. Offering a long snapper a scholarship is totally unprecedented and seems a ridiculous waste of a scholarship. More on this later.
  • Kevin Grady practiced; when asked about it Rodriguez said:

He's still suspended as far as actual games, but he's practicing. He's done enough to earn his status back on the team, but he's not done enough yet to warrant playing time, if you know what I mean. There will be some playing suspension, but that's yet to be determined. But he's out there working, and he's not working with the first couple groups.

    Mmph.
  • Junior Hemingway was still in a non-contact jersey after an injury in the spring. (According to Chengelis, it will be "a few days" before he's full-go.)
  • Elliot Mealer did not practice and it's "doubtful" he'll practice at all this month. A redshirt seems assured.
  • Molk, Johnson, Massey, and Brown -- all of whom had issues in the spring -- are fine now.
  • Brown took snaps at QB.
  • Freshman linebacker Marcus Witherspoon did not practice. Sounds like this is a Clearinghouse issue that should be resolved shortly.
  • Carson Butler switched to #5; Justin Feagin is now #3. (Both players are sharing with defenders; this is okay as long as they're not both on the field at the same time.)
  • Three freshmen were called out as potential contributors on defense: Mike Martin, Boubacar Cissoko, and JT Floyd. On offense, anyone at a skill position was mentioned.

There have been plenty of practice impressions bandied about -- concern about the quarterbacks reigns, shocker -- but it's a half hour on the first day of fall. Practice impressions should be reserved to the truly obsessive. Like me! I watched Rivals' video($) from the practice; nothing particularly stuck out except the editor's skill at whittling down what sounded like a pretty rough outing from the quarterbacks into five minutes of accurate balls. There was this one drill Shafer was having the linebackers sidle through an obstacle course, then scoop a loose ball, presumably in an effort to turn fumbles into touchdowns.

More on Morales. Rodriguez said that he signed in February. I'm a bit skeptical -- if so, why didn't they announce it with the rest of the signings? -- but also not, because the guy is on campus, way out of shape, and snapping. For dollars. Is this guy going to occupy a scholarship slot for the next four years?

I find that hard to believe and have concocted an alternative scenario: secure in the knowledge Michigan would have spare money this year, Carr offered Morales a guaranteed year of scholarship money to get him on campus but made it clear it was a one-year thing and future years would be doled out much like they are to other walkons: if there's an open slot, some kid gets lucky. Sort of like Reed Baker's scenario.

This is all probably moot. If this picture is any indication, he's going to explode in a shower of lipids the first time he comes within 100 meters of Mike Barwis.

No, he didn't. Either Adam Rittenberg must have looked at the wrong list or Michigan's deal with Adidas includes rocket-powered rollerskates, because this did not happen:

Walking through Michigan's weight room on the way out, I stopped to check out the team-high totals for several categories. Johnson tops the bench-press chart at 500 pounds, Taylor squatted a team-best 625 pounds and cornerback Morgan Trent ran a 4.13 in the 40-yard dash.

Morgan Trent is faster than he's given credit for (this is Trent running down some guy named Percy Harvin...

... which, like, dude) but no one runs a 4.13 unless he's just been thrown off a building. It doesn't matter. I guarantee you that Michigan fans on message boards say things like "LOL Morgan Trent runs a 4.13 so you'll like never complete a pass ever" all year, and when he gets drafted NFL fans will do the same. The Apocryphal Morgan Trent 4.13 Forty is now a part of internet lore, and it will never die.

Oooh, Barwis. Snippets of Barwis porn for your delectation. One:

The numbers on the jerseys were a little bit shorter and a little bit wider under the new Adidas material. The thinner men - including defensive lineman Terrance Taylor - were a noticeable shift in the tight-fitting jerseys.

Two:

Tight end Carson Butler looks great, slimmer and stronger. He should be a major asset for Rodriguez and the new starting quarterback.

Three:

"I asked them, 'Raise your hand if you're in the best shape of your athletic careers,' and I think they all raised their hands," Rodriguez said. "All of our team is in better shape. They got through the first practice, which was pretty intense. They got through it very well. The key for us is to continue to do that. We're not in game shape, but we're in better shape than we were in the spring."

Etc.: Rittenberg interviews Shafer: part one, and part two. Harrison is operating at safety; sounds like he and Brown will be the starters; no freshmen mentioned at linebacker.

Who is our starting long snapper? Because I'd like to say a few Hosanna's on his behalf that he does not get hurt. Not interested in seeing Morales on the field this year. We'll get him in shape and hopefully he can do something to contribute before his career is over. He seems like a good kid and I really like the Karmic possibilities of Lloyd's final recruit doing something down the line. I'll be pulling for him, for sure. Since we're offering back up long snappers schollies, here's hoping we find the smarts to unearth a kicker or two along the way!

It should not be retired. The development guys should speak to Woodson in the same manner they spoke with Braylon. Woodson puts a few $100k to sponsor a scholarship to the d-back that wears #2. The same thing should be done with the QBs and o-linemen. With the run of success that our guys have had in the pros, development should be working with those guys to endow a few scholarships and to have them more present on campus during the off-season. That would be a very strong recruiting tool as well as development tool.

Is anyone privy to the back story on Morales? It must have been some sort of favor to a family friend or Lloyd responding to some heart wrenching story with a scholarship (knowing full well that he isn't going to be the one that is coaching the team with one less scholarship). And the scholarship is out of state, making it much, much more expensive. Back up long snapper!?!?!?! I thought that all of those guys were walk-ons and guards that never had a shot of getting playing time on the starting o-line.

number one.... "scoop and score drill" every defensive coach ever has run one, including English, its a staple of every early season practice, as well as angle tackle drills, tip drills, and pursuit drills.... its funny to me that now that michigan is opening up a little, and updated its workout regiments to where its comparable to a sec or acc school, its exciting. I was watching the barwis work out video stuff, and noticed all the hip flexer drills that i was tlaking about before being done... notice all the hurdle work, duck walking etc... UNC has been doing that workout since 2000 number two.... long snapers are important besides the obvious, they also have to be good runners and tacklers... because they have to be alloud off the line of scrimage in a free kick situation, they are often times one of the first players down the field. the only place this kid could possible play is as a field goal snapper.

An outstanding long-snapper is not a waste of a scholarship, but anything less than that certainly is.  Almost every major college team has a lineman on the team who long snapped in HS, or can learn pretty easily.  Having more depth at a position that is on the field more than 10 plays a game would be better.

Yes, Woodson was a great player. And he did tremendous things for Michigan on the football field. He also gained greatly by honing his skills at Michigan. It is in the athletic department's interest to foster closer relationships, both financial as well as otherwise, with prominent alums/former players. If a former player has an investment in the program, he is more likely to spend time on campus, say glowing things about the program (choose the former player you would rather having speaking about Michigan in the media, Ty Law or Braylon), and generally being a positive for the program. I don't know your age, and if have graduated from a college/university (or private high school for that matter), but every alum gets those phone calls all of the time to support the alma mater. This is no different, just with higher stakes and handled much more professionally and personally.

Jerseys at Michigan generally don't get retired. Look at the short list. It took being the President, having 3 brothers all play, being an All American in Football and Basketball (Oosterbann), and generally being a God among men (Harmon) to get their number retired. I think that their is more glory in having the number associated with the player going on. other than Harmon's #98, I could not told you the numbers for Ford, Oosterbaan and the Wisterts (I didn't recall that Kramer had his number retired). But having the #1 with AC and Braylon is far more famous than all but possibly #98. Most college football fans know that Jim Brown wore #44 at Syracuse. That is likely die to the retelling of the story everytime a current player is awarded the jersey. In my opinion, the legacy of a given number is better served by being worn than by being retired.

Also, Michigan's already down to 94 options; any more retirements and you're going to have a ton of shared numbers instead of only a few. This year is unusual in that you could see #3 (Feagin, Brown) and #5 (Stewart, Butler) on both sides of the ball. IIRC the only time that's happened recently is when Grady and a kicker shared #3 a couple years ago.

I think I read somewhere that there were plans to retire Desmond's number, like 10 years ago, but they were shelved for some reason. Maybe they just decided that there shouldn't be any more retirements. Ron Kramer is the one on the list that seems the strangest. He played during a real "meh" period for Michigan football (mid-1950s), and as far as I know, didn't win any national awards. Is the award partly based on his weekly apple deliveries?

retiring numbers in college. For pro basketball or NHL its fine, no lack of numbers. But it seems like it would be a waste of a recruiting tool to retire #21 or #2. Imagine the way a kids eyes would light up if you showed them a tape of desmond or someone who played their position doing great things and then you say to them: "Now imagine yourself doing that in that same jersey." And dangle the damn thing in front of them. If you want to honor those great players from years past then build 'em a statute or something.

I think the plan was to retire 21 b/c he the 2 nd guy to win the heisman in 50 years. then woodson won it, and I assume the plans got shafted after that b/c then they'd have to retire 2 and another heisman winner due to precedence.

also, how the F do I make a new paragraph?
