7 months til we all witness best Freshmen QB ever..

Can't wait for Tate to get on the field.

Every QB who comes out of HS you hear positives and negatives. All I ever hear from Tate are positives. EVERYTHING I hear from this kid is good news and makes me that much more excited for the 2009 season.

Last offseason with Threet and Sheridan: All coaches said were they do good things and bad things. Tate is all good (so far, i know its still early)

I think this upcoming season he is going to be doing things not many Freshman have done:

Leading a 3 win team to a 9-10 win regular season record.
Throw for over 2,200 yards. 20+ TDs
Run for over 600 Yards. 5+ TDS

If you want negatives on Forcier, I'll list some:
1) size = the kid is not ideal height for a QB but since we play primarily out of shotgun, this factor should be somewhat mitigated
2) level of competition = Tate's level of competition in high school sucked, and he'll need time to adjust to speed of the college game
3) ball protection = Tate is absolutely horrible in terms of protecting the ball when running. Considering that we run a spread read option offense, Tate better learn to protect the ball better.

My post was to remind people that we had a pretty good freshman quarterback 5 years ago, it'll be pretty hard to top 2700+ yards passing, 25 TDs, and a 1 point loss in the Rose Bowl.

I don't need to try to disprove your point. Your comparison is invalid. The talent surrounding Henne as a true frosh is vastly superior than what will be surrounding Tate, if he's even named the starter. Plus, Forcier is NOT the same caliber QB recruit that Henne was coming out of high school. I'm not sure that its even close. Henne could've probably gone to any school he damn well wanted to. I doubt the same was true for Tate.

So your argument is that since Tate is surrounded by possibly inferior talent (since we really don't know how our current players will pan out yet), if he were to start at QB, we can anoint him best freshman Michigan QB evar?

Those balls didn't magically appear around our receivers. We didn't exactly have a run game for half a season either.

So once again, my point was that Henne as a freshman had a pretty spectacular season. Tate, if he starts, will find it hard to duplicate Henne's numbers.

Yeah... look, Tate's offer list was impressive. But you have to look at this way: There aren't many quarterbacks who can effectively run the spread option. Tate's offers came from schools looking for a certain quarterback and the most impressive offer (Florida) was clearly depth related as they didn't even manage top 5 consideration. He was not some insanely talented kid who every school had to have.

Tate would be leading a cast of mostly underclassmen at key skill positions; there isn't a single player on our offense I would think would get drafted this year.

I never understand why people feel this need to tear down Henne's accomplishments as a true freshman. Yes, he had good receivers - we always do. Should we downgrade Tom Brady's accomplishments, or Elvis Grbac's, or Jim Harbaugh's, because they, too, had good receivers to throw to? Didn't they have good OL in front of them, too?

The fact that Braylon won the Biletnikoff in 2004 is all the more evidence that Henne's freshman year was amazing. Braylon caught more passes for more yards and more TDs playing with the freshman Henne than he did with the senior Navarre the year before! Someone had to put the ball where Braylon could catch it. What Henne did was remarkable and may not be duplicated by another frosh QB here for a long, long time.

(By the way, in 2004 Jake Long was a redshirt freshman and nowhere near the level he'd later reach.)

allow me to introduce you to a head coach that had his system and his kind of players in place for about a decade and that had been in the program even longer. Also meet my good friend 10-3, that was Michigan's record the year before Henne took over. I think the others have already introduced you to some of the players returning from that team...

Glad you could join us.

i'll give these posters a little slack. tate is about the most ready qb to start as a freshman because of all the one on one coaching he's received. he's been coached almost to death and his upside probably isn't as great as a guy like denard's who still needs a lot of coaching. the great thing is we need a qb that can come in at some point this season and make a difference and with tate being so coached up, he looks like a better option than the other recruits who left us. the thing is who knows how good he'll be. look at threet, he had a redshirt year to get coached up and he could hit a receiver on a bubble screen. tate may not be the best freshman qb, but he should be about the most polished.

Tate received no more "one-on-one" coaching than any other D-1 QB prospect, the difference being most of the others didn't have their own websites telling you all about it.

Look, I'm excited about Tate. He has the skills set to run Rodriguez's offense the way it needs to operate. But like Jay said, Henne was a higher rated prospect, and so for that matter was Ryan Mallet. This is not our first big time QB recruit, so I wish we'd all stop acting like it. like i said above, he may not be the best qb, but he should be the most polished. part of the rating are off of upside and mallet and henne may have had more upside, but they probably weren't as polished when they came in.

How are we even sure this kid is going to be higher than #3 on the depth chart? We dont even know if he's going to be the best freshmen QB on the roster, let alone the starter.

He could be behind Threet and Robinson come September and it would not surprise me in the least.
