I will also update with the yearly "where is Nefarious Eduardo?" question.
2017 Recruiting Overview
Hello. This is an attempt to give you a 1,000 foot view of Michigan's current recruiting class. It lives as a wiki post under the "Useful Stuff" heading as well, and can be updated by anyone with 500+ points. Last updated 12/19.
Michigan can take a maximum of 31 LOIs in the class. Going past 31 requires Michigan to "blueshirt" kids. Blueshirting is recruiting a guy as a walk-on with the promise he will immediately get a scholarship upon arrival. This avoids the LOI cap but has other complications—kid can't take an official, for one. There are a few in-state guys who might sign up for that.
Per Sam Webb Michigan expects somewhere between 28-32. Right now we're projecting
28 29 30 31 31.
CURRENT CLASS SIZE
Michigan has 26 commits. We consider NJ WR Brad Hawkins a hard commit once again after prepping. FWIW, we project Ben Mason as a FB.
Some commits are soft. NM RB O'Maury Samuels has taken a visit or two and delayed his official, which can be a sign of an impending split. FL OL Kai-Leon Herbert visited Florida and Miami and plans to return to both.
At this juncture we aren't aware of anyone who definitely won't be in the class. Recruiting being what it is, there will be some additional turnover.
ROOM LEFT AND WHO MICHIGAN IS TARGETING
That leaves ~5 spots left. At this point Michigan's board is very narrow. They are done at QB, FB, and DE. Likely deployment of those spots:
- 1 WR
- 1 DT
- 1 DB
- 2 wild cards
Some guidelines to the below: players are put in columns based on the opinions of MGoStaffers and not necessarily because the recruit has announced Michigan is in X group or is a leader. To move out of “on the radar” you usually have to at least schedule a visit on a specific date.
Bolded players are projected commits. We have 31 on the list below.

Please don't remove updates until there is a front page board update that notes the changes.
That Iowa graphic is the most Iowa thing ever.
Hoo boy! Only a week? Digital? Going on a transatlantic flight next weekend woo hoo!
The new Eduardo looks even more nefariouser.
The (x+y) numbers under the position groups works out as:
x= Current Committs at that position
Y= Projected allotment of this position group in final scholarship count
Whatever happened with Dytarious Johnson?
on The Wolverine Beat, Nick doesn't think he signed anywhere else, he had some academic issues that he's been working on.
No real update. He may show up in the fall, he may have to be a walk on, Nick didn't know for sure.
If he's not academically cleared, he can't participate in team activities, even as a walk-on, can he?
No - the assumption I have seen is that he would take a prep year/semester (like St. Juste). The debate is whether M will still want/take him at that point --- staff claims "yes", recruitniks are more skeptical.
If he is not academically cleared that means he didn't pass admissions. Hard to be even a walk-on when you are not admitted to the school.
I don't think we'll hear anything about him until July or August. The clearinghouse stuff lasts deep into the summer. He wasn't academically qualified on Signing Day, so he'll probably have to take some victory lap classes in May and June. If it's cleared up, he'll be in Ann Arbor. If not, probably a JC
The number of DTs on the radar is a bit concerning
That is one person. We need depth on that position in the future and I don't know about you but I'd like our team to have the next man up mentality as the other big time teams have.
DT is a broad list of top targets for the staff and they are being patient seeing who visits and how a successful season impacts interest.
Is that why the staff is slow-playing Bolds and Hansard? I thought we had lead for both earlier.
They both have academic issues that they could get sorted out but the staff doesn't want to take the chance on them not getting in while they have equivalent or better players as options.
Might be able to list Darnell Ewell under "on the radar" since Michigan is listed as 'warm'.
OT is the abyss, not DT.
we need three, not one
That would be a fantastic class. Using 247's class calculator it has a projected team score of 296.30, which would have been good enough for 2nd last year. By comparsion, Michigan's class last year have a team score of 283.21 and was ranked 5th for 247's composite ranking.
So many hyphens.
With the best clearly being Joshua Fedd-Jackson.
I love that Deommodore Lenoir is listed under his Futurama WWE name, Clamp Clampington.
Greyshirt offers seem to have some advantages.
Greyshirt denotes at least one semester/year where the player will not be on the team or allowed to participate in team activities while paying for school at M (or nearby) while waiting for a scholly. Blue shirt is essentially a scholly from day one "when space is cleared". Both require a trust by the recruit that the staff will live up to the promises made as there is no paperwork for either.
what a oline haul that would be :)
good, they really need it. cant afford another class like 2013 when they filled depth holes with 6 OL signings, only 2 of whom remain on the roster (though harbaugh obviously has a solid track record of ID'ing and developing talent so hopefully that wont be an issue).
but bottom line, they need to add bodies at OL - and not just more guys to throw at the position down the line but several legit prospects they envision starting and impacting games early in their careers
they really do need numbers and quality numbers at that. that would be an amazing haul if they pull this class together
Last year they whiffed on a lot of major targets at tackle and with the 2013 class debacle, as you say we need a couple guys who can potentially play as redshirt freshmen.
Equipment managers should adhere them to ensure it is done consistently.
they are too big.
Are we still the leader for Wilson? Has he said anything as of late to that effect? I know he mentioned a top group, I'm just thinking out loud.
Hopefully he is just enjoying the process and doesn't feel the need to rush into a commitment.....I really want that kid in Maize and Blue.
Even with the recent good news, it's a little optimistic to put DPJ in the M leads for category.
Clicking on JKP goes to CMHs 247 page.
Using the 247 class calculator, our "Projected Team score" using these predictions puts us at: 296.47
2016 Team rankings were as follows:
1. Alabama 301.43
2. Florida State 295.47
3. LSU 290.65
4. OSU 289.16
5. Michigan 283.21
I would say Isaiah wilson has Alabama as his leader at this point
if so, our OT concerns me. it's bizarre. I'd think they'd be jumping at playing here with mccaffrey
I'm interested to see who we get at the interior defensive line positions. We definitely need at least two big time interior DL.
