TomVH: DT Aziz Shittu Rethinking his Commitment
A few weeks ago I had reported that Stanford commit DT Aziz Shittu would potentially take an official visit to Michigan this fall. Shittu, who is a five star prospect and ranked 12th in the country overall by Rivals, says he's now considering opening his recruitment up completely.
When asked what had changed with his recruitment Shittu said, "I haven't talked to [the coaches] about it so it's not official, but I want to enjoy the process," he said. "I'm thinking about opening everything up." So he hasn't officially decommitted from the Cardinal yet, but by the sounds of it he might be back on the market soon.
Shittu currently boasts 21 scholarship offers that includes Stanford, Michigan, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, and USC to name a few. If he does reopen his recruitment that would likely mean he would take summer visits. "I'm not sure yet where I want to visit, but I'm going to get out there. I'd like to make it out to Michigan," said Shittu. "I like [Michigan's] tradition and the style of play they want to do."
His commitment to Stanford tells you a lot about the quality of person that he is, and his 3.8 GPA gives you an idea how much he values academics. Whether he decommits from Stanford officially or not, it's safe to say that his recruitment is far from over.
LA Nike OL vs DL: Aziz Shittu:
<using my Mr. Burns voice> Excellent!
(while looking up at my picture of a smiling Bo Schembechler...)
Holy shittu...
...I'm sure it's very original
He is a charmer, isn't he? Sweeps me off my feet.
Since we've never really been in this situation with the class filling up way before kids can even take officials how will the coaches handle alot of these blue chip prospects waiting until NSD to make a decision?
a few this month. After that, I see the recruiting of the last 5-8 spots to take some time. Most of the guys we are in on now have expressed interest in taking all their visits. Obviously, that could change.
we currently only have 18 scholarships available so there isn't room for a few this month and then 5-8 later. We're going to need some attrition just to fill our two most needed positions, DT and OL given the expectations of 2 DT and 3-4 more OL.
We'll get it. The coaches themselves have indicated that they're recruiting for a full class. So there'll be attrition whether through normal transfers (at least some are likely) or not renewing fifth years.
When you hear Hoke & Co. are pursuing someone good things can happen. Surprised he didn't offer him while at SDSU like he did with Simmons and Magnuson.
You don't go after 5 star recruits when you are at San Diego St, its a waste of time.
It's better for any team, even SDSU, to at least offer a few five-stars, even if you don't have a chance in hell of getting them. You never know when somebody will surprise you, and since any team is going to get turned down a lot anyway, they might as well get turned down by a few five-stars.
Also, if one or two of them puts you on their list with the "big boys," it looks good to the other recruits.
I'm hoping our DL class is made up of PeeWee, Aziz and Danny O!
(in my best Eric Cartman voice)
I haven't seen that much holding since the collective Buckeye nation needed themselves for support for the s*itstorm that is brewing downthere.
+1 for your Shorts Brewing avatar...even though I'm fueled by Founders whenever possible. We Michigan beer lovers are very lucky.
Founders is the Shittu (there, brought it back on topic, kinda).
Short's is my favorite MI brewer currently. Founder's is always there, but Short's is experimenting on a scale rarely seen.
If you get to Benton Harbor, hit up The Livery. It's my hometown brewery and very good, they don't do the volume in order to bottle just yet. Maybe someday.
Shittu, Pipkens, Magnuson, Diamond and Simmons please. While you are at it, just throw in Washington/Standford, Wormley, and Dunn. Thank you!
he points and things happen as a result
over the last few years, so he sent down both the Basketball Moses and the Football Moses.
hopefully he can reel basketball Banner and football Banner for us.
The guy looks like a great prospect. Can you say All American. Just hope he is not pulling a Will Campbell.
To be clear, you mean Campbell playing around with coaches during his recruitment, right?
donning a yoke and literally pulling a Will Campbell. Could lead to a hernia, ya'know.
Tom, if you had to guess, do you think we end up with a good shot getting him?
I'm not really sure yet. With these kind of kids (out west or far away) that say they're interested or want to visit I always say you'll know if there's true interest if the visit actually gets scheduled.
He's never really been that far away from home before so it's up in the air. I think he saw his ranking and everyone that was recruiting him and wants to get out and see places he's never been. That might include Ann Arbor, I just don't know yet.
Thanks for the info, always good to hear what you have to say.
Why didn't this comment get posbanged? TomVH's posts are rated 5's as a rule!
Rivals currently has him decommitted and lists that he has medium interest in Auburn, Cal, Stanford, USC, and Washington. It lists all other schools as "no interest."
If Rivals says so, then we must have no hope! They are never wrong about anything and their information is updated by the second... not to mention their sources are bulletproof as well. *sigh* I guess we should just give up...
I't may be more helpfull to try and figure out why those particular schools are listed higher. Surely it isn't a random thing... so was there an interview in which he specifically listed those schools?

dissagree
With the type of defense Hoke is running and the number of people on the staff specialized in DL, I can't imagine guys aren't going crazy thinking about UM. The opportunity for early PT is there, the chance to be a part of a class with amazing coverage behind them at LB, and the solid DE prospects in the fold or close to it - guys like Pipkins, Shittu, Day, O'Brien have to be noticing this and strongly wanting to join the force of the pointed finger.
This is a double edged sword, imo.
Obviously it's nice to get another shot at a stud DT like Aziz. But if a 5-star, early commit like Aziz can de-commit, anyone can. See what I'm sayin?
I bet that some of our early commitments don't end up signing with us.
I agree and disagree with you. I disagree because I think Hoke is different, and you can see the passion in some of these kids who have already committed and are constantly recruiting others to join the class (See: RJS). On the other hand, if we keep landing top talent such as Aziz, Jones, Banner, Garnett, Diamond, Magnuson, Simmons, then I can see maybe the lower rated players thinking about whether they will ever see the field. But I think it is too early to tell, and we will have to wait and see how the rest of the class starts to fill out.
It's tough to know right now, but some of the commitments dropped, it would be sad. I see your point, it's a good point. But, I hope these guys drop because they want to and certainly not us dropping them.
This class is forming nicely now and there is not one single person that I wouldn't want to have.
Over. Please see LC years for recruiting expectations.
Won't embed but: http://youtu.be/tfslY_AvhLw
Would be a great fit for the D
We need him on the team, if only to hear how the PA announcer pronounces his name.
Nytol will help us get Aziz.....
