The #4 Michigan Softball team mercied Purdue for a second straight game today by a score of 10-0. This is the third back to back mercy rule win for the Woverines thus far this year.
Michigan was led my the strong arm of Stephanie Speierman who pitched 4.1 innings. Stephanie walked the bases loaded in the fourth with one out and JT came in and struck out the final two batters of the innings. Purdue only managed 2 hits today.
My pick for All-American Ashley Lane was the offensive hero today. She went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs and a run scored. Ashley now leads the team in HRs and RBIs. Not to shabby hitting from the number 5 slot.
Colie Sappingfield also contributed by going 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Dorian Shaw's bat came alive today by going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
These were both impressive wins considering the first three games at home were duds. I guess we are a warm weather team.
The Univeristy of Michigan softball team won its home opener today against Bowling Green University Falcons (4-2). The win puts our record at 32-2. Michigan had 10 hits and committed 1 error.
It was 40°F with a wind chill factor of 36°F. The Humidity was 36% and the UV index was rated a 1. The wind was 6mph From the N. The sun peaked through several times during the game.
Michigan was led by Ashley Lane who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored via a HR. Today's HR gives Ashley 11 HRs which ties for for the team lead with Dorian Shaw. The 2 RBIs give her 41 which leads the team. Ashely's HR came in the bottom of the 5th inning that was estimated to be 300 feet. It was a monster blast.
Amanda Chidester went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI. Lindsay Doyle went 2 for 3 as well, with 1 RBI.
Stephanie Speierman was in the circle today to improve her record to 15-0. She gave up 1 ER on 3 hits with 6 Ks and 6 BB. She also gave up 1 home run. Jordan Taylor came in relief in the top of the 7th inning, striking out 2, for the save.
Stephanie sturggled today against a very bad Bowling Green team. BGU has only 4 wins on the year. Stephanie's BB to K ratio is too high. A good pitcher should be about 1:2 and a great pitcher 1:3. Hutch is giving Stephanie gametime because once we get into the meat of the conference schedule, her playing time could be reduced.
We host Indiana this Saturday and Sunday, both games start at 2pm. The weather is forecasted to be in the 40s with a slight chance of rain.
The M Softball train keep rolling along this spring. Today we defeated a fairly good ND team 9-4.
The offensive was explosive today by gathering 16 hits. Sophomore sensation Ashley Lane was the hero today by going 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Senior Dorian Shaw went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Sophomore Pitcher Stephanie Speierman was awesome on the rubber today. She gave up 6 hits, and 2 ER. She struck out 6 and walked 1. Hilary Payne came in to relieve Stephanie in the bottom of the 7th. She allowed 2 hits and struck out 1, and 0 ER.
Notre Dame came into the Judi Garman Classic with a ercord of 14-2. In their first game fof the tourney, ND beat #9 Oklahoma 2-1 in a thrilling contest. They were mercied by Cal State Fullerton 10-0, then lost to La-Laf 5-1. They got it together and beat New Mexico 5-0 and then lost to #4 Washington 7-4 before facing the Ann Arbor Assassins.
We play one more game in this tourney against Fresno State.
The women's softball team won again early this morning, with a 5-2 victory over Cal State Fullerton.
Chiddy was the big stick by going yard (2 for 3) and 2 RBIs and a run scored. Dorian Shaw went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Stephanie Speierman got the start and pitched 5,2 innings, She allowed 2 ER while strkingout 1 and walking 7, Jordan Taylor came in to face the final 5 hitters and struk out 2, 0 BB and 1 HBP (ouch, that's going to leave a mark).
Not a very good start for Stephanie but good enough for the win. We play tomorrow at 4pm against #8 Arizona. This should be a dandy.
The time change must have altered the Michigan Softball Mojo today. The Wolverines had a difficult time in the second game today against Louisville. They just could not get the bats going for this game either.
M only had 5 hits but it was enough to beat Louisville 2-0. The key play was speed. Jaclyn Crummey was a pinch runner for Caitlan Blanchard, who singled in the 5th. Jaclyn stole two bases to get into scoring position and Lindsay Doyle hit a single to drive Jaclyn in. In the top of the 7th inning, Ashley Lane led off with a triple off the wall in centerfield and scored on a SF from Caitland Blanchard.
Nicole Sappingfield's 20-game hit streak came to an end. She went 0-3 in the second game. Thank you Colie for a great run, not too shabby for a Freshman.
Stephanie Speierman started on the mound in the second game. She allowed 0 ER on 5 hits (2 for extra bases). She gave up 2 BB and had 4 Ks. She was relieved by Jordan Taylor in the 6th inning with 2 runners on and no outs. JT came in and struck out the first batter, and forced the remaining two hitters to hit into outs, thus preserving the shutout.
In the first game today, the Wolverines were hand cuffed by Hilltopper pitcher Mallorie Sulaski. The Wolverines were able to scratch out 2 runs on 6 hits but it wasnt enough as WKU scored 3 runs off 4 hits.
M pitcher Jordan Taylor was in great form this morning. She gave up 3 ER on 4 hits with 12 Ks and 3 BB. She gave up only 1 extra base hit and 1 HBP. One of the key plays was a bases loaded walk in the 3rd inning followed by a single for 2 runs in the bottom of the third.
The offense was led by none other thatn Ashley Lane who hit a 2 run HR in the top of the 7th inning for the only Wolverine scores. We also had 10 LOB there was plenty of scoring opportunities, including the 1st inning when we had bases loaded with only 1 out and did not score.
Nicole Sappingfield extended her hitting streak to 20 games as well.
All in all, it was a dissapointing game considering we had so many opportunities to score. We just couldnt get the bats going. Combine that with JT's less than perfect outing led to a rare Michigan loss.
This is the worst type of loss. Sometimes the bestter team does not always win. Michigan did not commit any defensive errors although WKU took advantage of a bad defensive throwing decision, and scored. It was not scored an error as poor decisions rarely do.
Michigan better bring their "A" game next weekend for the Judi Garman Classic at Cal St Fullerton. They will play Arizona and Arizona State, which are both ranked teams.
The Michigan Wolverine Softball team won for the second time today against Western Kentucky by a score of (7-1 ).
My pre-season All-American selection Ashley Lane got her bat going today by going 2 for 3. She had 3 RBIs and a run scored. Amanda Chidester went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Bree Evans went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Stephanie Speierman was on the rubber for the Wolverines. She allowed only 1 earned run while giving up 6 hits. She recorded 5 Ks and 2BB and only gave up 1 extra base hit.
The Team is now 24-0 and play again twice tomorrow 13MAR11.
