this week in unintentionally grim-sounding recruiting headlines
Red's done great things for this program and no doubt he has universal respect in the hockey world, but as Michigan just shot themselves in the foot for the 3rd straight year I thought I'd look at the numbers to see the impact Mel has had.
Mel has been at either Tech or Michigan since the 1985-1986 season. Darker lines are with Mel (2014 is projected based on current win%)
(Apologies for the hastily assembled, hard to read chart)
Red is a great guy, but I think it's his time. Retire with all appropriate fanfare and respect, but Hackett needs to call Mel and ask what he needs to come back to Ann Arbor.
As Berenson did three decades ago, a new coach in Ann Arbor is moving from the biggest professional league to the campus.
He was asked if he had any advice for new football coach Jim Harbaugh.
"I think the thing about coming back to college, you know why you are here," Berenson said. "This isn't a stepping-stone to someplace else.
"You've been there and you've done that, and now you want to build something special here.
"It's not going to happen in a year or in one game, but you want to build something special.
"I didn't come here to leave, the first time I had a job offered. I didn't know I'd be here for 30 years, of course. But Jim Harbaugh's not here to have a cup of coffee.
"He's here to try to build a dynasty, and that is what we all do."
As for the future, Berenson makes it plain.
"We're down to one year at a time, and right now, I'm just worried about this year," he said. "And we'll see where it's going and what's good for the program."
So now that we're at the halfway point of the Big Ten's second season as a hockey conference, what is your impression of the whole reallignment (formation of Big Ten and NCHC, dissolution of CCHA, expansion of HE, merging of WCHA)? Personally I think while it is cool that we play Minnesota and Wisconsin, I miss the traditional matchups against smaller schools that makes college hockey so damn great and I hate that it all happened because of money. And additionally, fewer games are actually on TV because more are being siphoned to online platforms, which just hurts the fans from being able to more easily watch Michigan. What do others think now that we're 1.5 years in?

...because that's just what we do when we conquer Spartie!
Nice win at The Joe, 2-1 over MSU. Just as age is more or less just a number to Red Berenson, posbanging is more or less what what we do while our Michigan hockey team celebrates a win over State by singing "The Victors" in the JLA locker room!
