The nutty Michigan coverage isn't so much about Harbaugh as it is a signal to the Big Ten that Fox wants to party.
Carol Hutchins appeared on the Inside Michigan Sports Radio Show recently and made some public statements regardings the injury situations on the team that some of us have been concerned about. Senior pitcher Sara Driesenga has been out since the Alabama series with what Hutchins described as a "naggy minor injury", but she said she was hoping to get her back in the next "week or so". Lauren Sweet, meanwhile, suffered a sprained ankle againt Kent State. She is back on her feet, though, and is expected back "shortly". Any issues with other players Hutch wrote off as just "bumps and bruises, aches and pains" - standard things that come up in any season.
It's a relief to hear the good news on both fronts, especially for Lauren Sweet. Sweet has been having a fantastic senior season, and went down on a nasty-looking slide into home. I was afraid it was a knee injury or something long-term like that looking at the video, so it's good to hear it's not something that huge, and that she's on the mend. For us to go deep in the tournament, having her & Driesenga back at full speed will be big.
The SB Team completed a 3-game sweep against Penn State today by winning a double header 18-4 and 9-6. Today, combined with teh emotional game yesterday, gives us a 6-0 record in conference play.
In the first game, Sara continued to dominate in the circle as well as at the plate. She led all hitters by going 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs. In the circle, she pitched all 5 innings; gave up 4 ER on 5 hits. She had 3 Ks and 5 BB with 1 HBP.
Sierra Romero went long and deep, twice; finishing 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Caitlin Blanchard went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. Ashley Lane went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI. Sierra Lawrence went 2 for 3 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Colie went 3 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
Overall we had 17 hits for the first game mercy-rule win. Romero continues to tare it up and should be the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Lawrence will also get some love as well. Caitlin is now leading the team in BA (>50 AB).
In the second game, Lauren Sweet came up big. She went 4 for 4 with 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Colie went 3 for 5 with an RBI. Ashley Lane went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Jaclyn Crummey went 2 for 4.
Haylie got the ball in the second game and pitched all 7 innings. She gave up 6 runs (2 ER) on 8 hits and 2 M errors. She had 6 Ks and no BB although she had 2 HBP.
I predicted Penn State to finish near the bottom of the conference. However, it is great to see such good pitching and timely hitting. The game 1 game-ball goes to Sara and the game 2 game ball goes to Lauren.
Great job again ladies. Keep it up.
The Michigan Softball Team traveled to ohio this weekend for a Friday Night / Saturday Double series against ohio. ohio is play some very good ball but we were just too much for them. We easily defeated our rivals by a score of 9-2
We were helped by a big 5-run third inning. Ashley Lane and Lauren Sweet came up big in that inning and the game. Ashley went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored from the #4 hole. Ashley hit a 3 run dinger in the 4th. While Lauren went 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored from a 3 run dinger in the 3rd.
Sara Driesenga hit 2 home runs, a first for her in her early career. Her first came in the 1st inning with bases empty. It was a beautiful solo shot that just stayed fair down the RF line. It looked like it hooked foul but just cleared the foul pole. Her second came in the 7th inning and was to left field. There was no question on this one. Sara finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Haylie Wagner dominated the suckeyes today except for one back pitch to star play Alicia herron who took her long and hard with a runner on. She finished with 2 ER off 6 hits. She had 9, count 'em, 9 strikeouts with only 1 HBP, out of 27 batters faced. What amaizing control today for Haylie.
Now this is the type of game that we needed for weeks: a tough opponent that we dominate. Coach has to be happy tonight. The only problem is they have to stay in suckeye land tonight for towmorrow's double header.
Michigan Softball had two players that were honored by the B1G. Freshman Catcher Lauren Sweet was named Freshman of the Week and Freshman Haylie Wqgner was named Co-Pitcher of the week. Michigan was 4-0 over the past week.
Congrats to the Freshmen. Keep up the good work.
The Michigan Softball team won a close one this afternoon 3-2 against the Hofstra Pride. We took a 2-0 lead into the top of the 7th. Sara Driesenga got the start and pitched very well through 6 innings. The top of the 7th was not her inning. She gave up a hit and a critical HBP. Haylie came in but could not shut the Pride down. They scored 2 runs to tie the game.
In the bottom of the 7th, Stephanie Kirkpatrick SAC Crummey over to 2nd and Bree Evens doubled her home for the win.
Sara finished the game with 4 hits, 2 ER, 4K, !BB and 1 HBP. Haylie got the win in relief. She had 1 walk, 1 strikeout and 1 HBP.
Lauren Sweet was the big bat today going yard for 2 RBI and another single. Caitland Blanchard went 2 for 3. We ended up with 7 hits total which is much better than yesterday.
Coach mixed it up even more today. She had Mandy playing 1B, Lauren in RF and Caitland C. It is good to see the ladies fight back after a disappointment yesterday.
The Softball team split today winning 3-1 against Illinois State in the first game. They lost in the second game 1-0 against UMass. The team is in Clearwater this weekend.
Haylie Wagner got the win in the first game. She gave up 1 ER on 4 hits, she struck out 8 and walked only 2. Chiddy was the big bat today hitting a 3 run Bomb in 3 AB. Colie went 2 for 3 and scored on Chiddys dinger.
In the second game against UMass, we could not get the bats going. We could only muster 2 untimely hits. Sara Driesenga took the loss. She pitched very well though. She gave up 1 ER on 2 hits with 2 Ks and 2BB. Lauren Sweet was a sweet-spot in the lineup with a double.
UMass is a good team. If everyone remembers, we had a couple of close games with them last year. This year UMass is 4-3 so maybe they are down a little.
Overall not too disappointing, although I am sure Coach is kicking some @ss. In close games, anything can happen. This game was going down to the wire and the lucky team was going to win this one.....and they did. Sometimes in softball, the best team doesnt always win. Congrats to UMass for hanging around and getting it done. They deserved the win today. This will be a learning curve for us with out a doubt.
We play again tomorrow at 3:30 and 6pm.
