Detroit Red Wings

OT: Red Wings playoff streak officially over

  • no we're not talking playoffs
  • we talking playoffs?

With a 4-1 loss to the Hurricanes tonight, and the Leafs and Bruins both winning, for the first time since 1990, the Detroit Red Wings will not be playing postseason hockey

Detroit's streak of 25 consecutive trips to the #StanleyCup Playoffs has officially ended; it ties the 3rd-longest such run in NHL history.

— NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) March 29, 2017

Most Consecutive Appearances in #StanleyCup Playoffs:
29: BOS, 67/68–95/96
28: CHI, 69/70–96/97
25: STL, 79/80–03/05 and DET, 90/91–15/16

— NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) March 29, 2017

While I wish we could have broken Boston's 29 year record, this was a good streak. Unlike the Blues and Blackhawks during their streak, we actually won the Stanley Cup, and unlike the Bruins, we did it over multiple decades of our streak

OT: Sling TV Beta Multi-Stream (FSD)

Cord cutters:

I see that Sling TV is now offering Fox Sports Detroit (and other regional Fox Sports channels) as part of its new Beta Multi-Stream service.  The price is the same as the traditional single stream service, but without Disney channels.

I am wondering if this is finally a way to get, cheap, legal broadcasts of Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings games?  (Is this going to work easily or is there some catch?)

If this works then I may never go back to cable.  I'll just force myself to the bar for the 3 or so crappy Michigan football games on Big Ten Network.

Anyone try it out?

EDIT:  I see that "Disney channels" includes the ESPN channels and not just Disney, Disney Jr., etc.  That changes things.

OT: Red Wings Arena District plans unveiled

Plans have been published for the new Arena District. Lots of interesting stuff included. Crains Detroit has a series of 6 articles. You can check them out here

http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20140720/NEWS03/140719845

Quote

Deconstructed design: Most arenas are built as a big box with the playing surface and seating ringed by concourses, concession stands, team offices and restaurants. But the new arena will be “deconstructed” with the outer-ring functions moved into structures just set off or pulled away from the core inner playing surface and seats. They won’t be separate buildings, but linked by a first-ever interior streetscape.

Quote

Glass covered streetscape: The area between the seating bowl and the outer buildings will be covered by glass to create a “covered via,” or interior streetscape, filled with trees, retail, dining and other amenities. Bridges and walkways will connect the outer buildings to the seating bowl through this covered interior street.

Quote

Lighted roof design: The roof of the arena will be fashioned with the most modern programmable lighting so that different images can be produced for a given event. In the rendering provided by Olympia Development, the roof shows the Red Wings logo as it will on hockey nights. But the roof could be green for St. Patrick’s Day or something else for a concert by Kid Rock or Eminem, Ilitch said. He described the desired effect as “classy, not gaudy.”

Quote

Playing surface: The playing surface will be set about 32 feet below ground level to lower the profile of the building, producing a more human-scale environment in the district where most buildings will rise just two to four stories. That follows the practice at Comerica Park and Ford Field, where the playing surfaces were set below ground level.

Quote

A DRAMATIC TRANSFORMATION OF THE HEART OF DETROIT will begin in September, when the Ilitch family breaks ground on the construction of a $450 million Detroit Red Wings arena concurrently with another $200 million in apartments, restaurants, office buildings, parks and shops over 45 blocks. This is the city’s entertainment district, super-sized.

This could be huge for Detroit and it seems like the Illitches are really committed to seeing the full plan happen. Chris Illitch even went so far as to commit to spening "10's of millions" beyond what they had already guranteed.

Thoughts?

NHL Wolverines free agency/trades updates

  • Kevin Porter

  • NHL
  • Steve Kampfer

I saw the Guptill and Porter threads but thought it might be a good idea to make a comprehensive thread since a few more deals have gone down and more Wolverines hockey alumni are on the move:

Trades:

  • Alex Guptill (Dallas to Ottawa as part of Jason Spezza deal) (original thread)

Free Agents:

  • Matt Hunwick to the New York Rangers (previously Colorado)
  • Kevin Porter to the Detroit Red Wings (original thread) (previously Buffalo)
  • Steve Kampfer to the New York Rangers (previously Minnesota)
  • Al Montoya to the Florida Panthers (previously Winnipeg)
  • Mike Cammalleri to the New Jersey Devils (5 years/$25 million) (previously Calgary)
