FULL ELEVATOR

I cannot begin to express how much the universe tried to keep me from publishing this thing. All sorts of life obstacles kept pushing this to the side burner all week, and apologize for pushing back the reveal so late. The stories are not worth telling, but rest assured I will do my best to not get derailed next week.

On Thursday we salute a legend.

NEVER TRUST A SPARTY

(Click the image to view full size)

Don't know about the rest of you... but I had a hard time feeling good on Saturday night, even after a strong win that spoke very well about the program.  First, watching Notre Dame "un-lose" their game in triple overtime was just plain disturbing.  But even worse was the whole experience of 'rooting' for Michigan State to win, and ultimately being let down by their shortcomings and occasional ineptitude.

And, of course, it cost us dearly.

So even after the compelling performance by Devin Gardner against a pesky Minnesota team fueled by overconfidence and a sidelined Shoelace... going to bed after the Bama-LSU game still felt like... a loss. And I wanted to address it in this week's strip, even if it meant digging up emotions I've since moved on from.  Apologies if it's done the same to you.

On Thursday Tom... wakes up.

CAPTION CHALLENGE RESULTS

Congratulations go out to the winner of the first ever Blockhams Caption Challenge!  Our first ever winner is a young, talented and sarcasm-free writer named Brian Cook, who took home over 20% of the 400 reader votes.

For the victory Brian will win an all expense-paid trip to this weekend's Northwestern game, complete with excellent tickets, a tailgate party, media accessibility, and even a meet and greet with media personalities Heiko Yang and Ace Anbender.  Thanks to the proprietor of MGoBlog.com for donating this excellent prize package to the winner.

Brian & Seth in "THE BLOCKHAMS CAPTION CHALLENGE"

After never missing a regularly-scheduled strip in ten full months of The Blockhams, I finally admitted defeat in the face of natural disaster on Tuesday.  But today we're back, with the first ever...

After working up some artwork a few weeks ago I found myself searching for the perfect punchline and couldn't quite nail it down.  I even bounced it off of the never-ending idea machine known around here as Misopogon.  And somewhere around there, I had an idea of my own... wouldn't it be fun if I could invite some of the Michigan Media's more famous faces and/or names to write a caption for the art?  Surely I thought it would be cool to see how these journalistic types might tackle on something a bit more creative, and by all means it would be interesting to see how each one stacked against each other when the dust had settled.

So, by my own admission, the whole thing was thrown together rather haphazardly on Twitter.  And the whole misery of natural disaster thing this week didn't help. Plus there was Hurricane Sandy too.  (hur hur)

But in the end, it all worked out.  Over on The Blockhams site I have all of the results displayed, and even have a poll set up to determine the winner.  The only problem now is that I wanted to include links and shout-outs to the sites of each of the respected contestants. As you are now reading this on one of those sites, it's hard not to look at it as a conflict of interest that I would include a poll on Brian's own site.  I also didn't want to link out to all other sorts of Michigan sites here-- I feel guilty enough driving traffic away enough just by linking to The Blockhams itself.

So as a healthy compromise I've chosen to display the entries of both the staffers here at MGoBlog that agreed to take part.  If you would like to see the rest and/or vote for either the Photobomb Ninja himself or the Artist Formerly Known as Misopogon, then by all means you are welcome to.  But at any rate I thought it would be worth showing MGoBlog what two of the official staff are capable of in a unique creative challenge.

So without further ado, I present to you this week's edition of The Blockhams, drawn by myself and written by both Brian and Seth.

On Thursday we look ahead to a big showdown... in Nebraska of all places.

In light of all of the mayhem over the weekend, plus a really frantic week of serving as a de facto tour guide for visiting in-laws, I opted to push back the Caption Challenge to next week.  I obviously also wanted to do a piece on the MSU game, so it turned out to be win-win.  I'll present the Caption Challenge next Tuesday in all its confused glo

Those taking part in the first ever Caption Challenge include:  ESPN's Tom Van Haaren aka TomVH (duh!), JustCoverBlog's JamieMac, MLive's Kyle Meinke, The Wolverine's Tim Sullivan, Tremendous's Steve Lorenz (the artist formerly known as Aquaman), MVictor's Greg Dooley, Maize n Brew's Anthony Mammel, The Hoover St. Rag's Craig D. I'll work them all up, and we may even have a poll.  The winner will receive a free

TWIN CITY SOCKS

(Click the image to view full size)

Ahh yes, the socks.  We've heard of their mystical powers and, uh, comfort.  And we've read about their more-valuable-than-gold status within Schembechler.  So of course Tom needed a pair.

I'd like to thank a certain contributor who was instrumental in putting this thing together and wished to remain anonymous.  Happy with the collaboration.

On Thursday Tom discusses the upcoming Sparty game with his little brother.
And then next week we'll unleash the very first...

That's right-- later today I'll be sending out a very special Blockhams strip and some of the more famous members of the Michigan universe will be writing the words for it.  To keep it simple, each contributor will be asked to supply 10 words or less to complete the already finished artwork, and I presume that the results should be entertaining to say the least.

Those taking part in the first ever Caption Challenge include:  ESPN's Tom Van Haaren aka TomVH (duh!), JustCoverBlog's JamieMac, MLive's Kyle Meinke, The Wolverine's Tim Sullivan, Tremendous's Steve Lorenz (the artist formerly known as Aquaman), The Hoover St. Rag's Craig D. Barker, Maize n Blue Nation's Brad Muckenthaler,  Midnight Maize's own The Shredder, and some guys named Seth and Brian that you might have heard of.

I'll work them all up, and we may even have a poll.  The winner will receive a free
all-inclusive trip with Charlie Blockham to Ms. Katzenmoyer's office. Stay tuned!
