So this is kinda old news and mostly deals with NBA stuff, but I have been thinking about this for a few weeks now and I wanted to see if any MGobloggers have any insights on this topic.
Basically the Mark Cuban Foundation has funded a study at UofM to test if Human Growth Hormone can help repair the knee muscles that atrophy after ACL surgery. Weakness in these muscles elevates the chances for re-injury amongst athletes. You can link to the article here.
First of all, I think it is kinda cool that Shark Cuban is working with Michigan. It also sounds like this is one of the few health/medicine related donations he has made (he funded a study on a form of childhood cancer a few years back). No $ figures released, but based on the cost of randomized controlled trials and the fact that his foundation usually donates something on the order of $100,000 each year, I am guessing this is his big charitable project for 2015.
According to clinicaltrials.gov, the application for the trial was submitted on April 9, about a week after Chandler parsons had arthroscopic surgery on his knee for a cartilage injury (less invasive, so atrophy is not quite as much of a concern). But at the same time, we all know how the Great Rondo Experiment of 2015 played out for Dallas; and as a Celtics fan I can affirm that Rondo never looked the same after his ACL surgery. Anyhow, this makes me wonder if the 2 injuries somehow inspired Cuban to make this donation.
I am glad Cuban is looking out for his players' long-term health, even if it also helps his bottom line. And kudos to him for working with the Leaders and Best (of sports medicine).
So, I was bored this afternoon and decided to watch some games from last year and I made an observation, which some of you may be interested in, others maybe not. But, Drake Johnson has obviously torn his ACL twice and I think I know why.
Before I get into why Drake’s susceptible lets do a quick anatomy lesson. Your ACL attaches to your femur (upper leg) and tibia (lower leg) and is one of the major ligaments (attaches bone to bone) that cross your knee. Its role is to prevent your tibia from rotating independently of your femur. To illustrate, cross your right middle finger over your index finger. This is a model of how your ACL crosses over your knee joint. Next wrap your left hand around your crossed fingers and externally rotate your right hand. You’ll notice this force tightens your fingers. If instead you internally rotate your right hand, your fingers loosen and come apart. The former is a stable position for your knee, the latter an unstable one. When your feet are pointed straight ahead of your body/torso and your knees are slightly outside of your feet you are creating a stable ACL. When your feet open up it becomes difficult to track your knee outside unless your have incredible glute control and your tend to internally rotate or collapse your knee, collapse at the ankle, and lose the arch in your foot.
It looks like Drake wears ankle supports, which is a possible indication that he’s been doing this for some time. The arch you won’t see in a fully padded football player wearing cleats, but the knee you certainly can. I believe this latter foot/knee position is exactly what I see Drake doing and why he is susceptible to ACL tears and he’s allowing his feet to externally rotate which is driving his knee inward and losing torque at his knee joint and making his ACL susceptible when under high speeds/loads. But, this all starts by losing force through the hips. Here’s a few pictures that illustrates what I mean.

Drake uses this strategy over and over. The vast majority of the time it is not an issue as he's obviously a high level athlete and a very strong guy. However, when he uses this strategy under high loads or speeds the ACL becomes more susceptible and eventually as his past has show will tear under the pressure. If he can learn the maintain torque through the hip, knee, ankle, and foot by pointing his toes straight ahead of him, not allowing his arch to collapse, and tracking his knee over or slightly outside of his foot, the will greatly reduce the chances of this happening.
The third overal pick and Jacksonville first round pick, Dante Fowler Jr., tears ACL within first hour of rookie minicamp.
Apparently there is an injury protection waiver that makes sure his contract is negotiated in good faith as if he was not injured.
Some horrible luck for Denard's team. I was hoping an improved defense would allow them to run the ball more.
Per NFL.com, Jake Long may have torn his ACL and might be out for the season. That's a rough break for such a great player. I'd give anything for two Jake Longs on this team.
In some horrible news Jonas Mouton has suffered a torn ACL and will likely miss the entire 2013 NFL season. Mouton also missed the entire 2011 season after a shoulder injury.
Hope him all the best in his recovery, and he can get back to contributing to the Chargers.
Slippery Rock Exhibition
On Friday night, the Michigan women's basketball team defeated Slippery Rock 106-35 in their lone exhibition game of the the 2012-13 campaign. The more up-tempo style of offense that Kim Barnes Arico is known for was clearly evident and is the focus of this Daily article. The one thing that surprised me was the coach starting sophomore Brenae Harris at point guard rather than highly touted freshman Madison Ristovski. Harris did fine, however, scoring 16 points on 7-8 shooting and also had 3 assists and just 1 turnover plus 3 steals. Ristovski actually ended playing more minutes than Harris (25 vs. 22), though, so that starting spot is probably still up for grabs. Ristovski tallied 10 points on 4-6 shooting, along with 4 assists, just 1 turnover, and 2 rebounds.
Jenny Ryan Named Captain
Prior to the exhibition, senior guard Jenny Ryan was named team captain.
"After talking to our players today about leadership and who we want to lead this team, we gave them the opportunity to vote on a captain," Barnes Arico said. "I don't think there is any doubt in anyone's mind that she is the person that we want to lead this team. She is a coach on the floor; she is a coach in the locker room and just has a passion to be the best at everything she does. She is a team first kind of kid. I think that it was a very good selection."
AMWBHG Strikes Again
This previous women's hoops update noted that 7 out of the 15 players on the 2012-13 roster have suffered ACL injuries either during their Michigan career or in the year prior to their arrival in Ann Arbor. Make that 8. A few days ago, junior forward Kendra Seto tore an ACL, ending her season. Four players on the team thus might have to sit out this season with ACL injuries, as Val Driscoll and Kelsey Mitchell are definitely out, and freshman Rebecca Lyttle, who tore an ACL during her senior year in high school, is still recovering and was in street clothes for the exhibition game. An unbelievable string of bad luck for the team.
