"The University of Illinois is also in turmoil. The university sports an Interim Chancellor, an Interim Athletic Director, and an Interim Football Coach; the game will be played at Soldier Field, making this an Illini Interim Home Game."
So the Lions are apparently trying to follow in RichRod's footsteps, announcing today that they signed undrafted free agent WR Demir Boldin of Wake Forest. He's from Pahokee, but his 5'11" frame seems a little small to be carrying 205 lbs (!) at the wideout spot. No word on a fake 40 time yet.
Another guy we signed...a kicker from UAB with possibly the coolest name ever -- SWAYZE WATERS. (I want him on the U-M roster now.)
Andrew Downey - LB - Maine
Dan Gerberry - C - Ball State
John Gill - DT - Northwestern
This is sort of building on a couple of the other threads and as far as I can see, this exact subject has not been talked about yet.
Mayhew actually seems to know what he is doing, even though he was Millen's right hand man, especially if they end up getting Larry Foote and not drafting a middle linebacker in the draft. He's had some solid, but not spectacular offseason signings. For example:
- Grady Jackson, when healthy, is a pretty good run stopping defenisve tackle. Granted he has to stay healthy a lot more, but he's very serviceable.
- Eric King was a back up cornerback for the Titans, so Schwartz has some good familiarity with him. They signed him because he knew that King could contribute and possibly fight for a starting position. If nothing else, he provides quality depth.
- Getting Philip Buchanon was also pretty good and they got him for cheap. He's had an up and down career, so if he doesn't pan out, then it didn't cost us too much.
Also, despite what people are saying about this draft, it was actually pretty solid. Pettigrew, contrary to what people are saying below, will help the offensive line. He will be able to "chip" block defensive ends and stay in to block as well, as he was widely regarded as the best blocking tight end in the draft. I do think Delmas was taken a little early, but some teams had him rated as the best safety prospect of the draft, so maybe it wasn't too bad. Derrick Williams could potentially become a 3rd or 4th receiver, but his main contributions will come in the return game. I think Lydon Murtha can be a serviceable back up and Follett in the 7th round is a great pick because he made so many plays for Cal in his career that I think he'll at least make the special teams. Was this the best draft they could have possibly have? No, but it was solid and that's more than I can say for any of Millen's drafts.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on Mayhew's job in general (this isn't talking about the Lions' draft or the possibility of signing Foote; just on Mayhew's job in general).
Eric Berry. He could be the best defensive football player I have ever seen. He is one good reason I am stuck and live in the state of Tennessee. Please learn about him if you don't know. As a die hard Michigan man, I think he is better than Woodson.
Why does everyone keep saying the Lions had a shitty draft? They picked the TOP RATED QB, the TOP RATED TE, and THE TOP RATED DB. They picked up a OLB and a DT in the later rounds. They can't fix all the holes at once, and one must realize it is going to take at least another year or so to get all the talent they need to be a legit contender. Overall I think they did great. They can pick up a few OL next year. Then some more defensive players. They did fine and can't wait to see what they do in a few years.
Pettigrew can catch and block. That is the joy of this TE. He can help in the run and in the pass game.
Well I was content with the lions picks so far. That was untill they just picked up Aaron Brown. He wasn't that good when he was at TCU that I know of. His stats aren't amazing. This is the pick that confuses me from Detroit. Your defense is the worst in the league (Pretty sure thats right anyways), yet you decide to draft a RB. I don't get it. He may be a fine RB, but you could use anything on defense pretty much. Anybody with me on this?
Are you serious?
