WTKA Roundtable 12/14/2017: Just Go Play Basketball
“We know what we’re involved in. We’ve seen the ball, it’s a basketball, it’s not a highlight object…what’s a highlight ball called?”
Things discussed:
- Patterson a done deal, again tentative leader to start next year remains Brandon Peters. Shea’s like Tate Forcier if you came in on the higher side of Forcier. Patterson has to learn the offense, drop-backs, while Peters has a two-year head start on all of that.
- Tolbert: Michigan wanted to get stronger after the OSU game. Has this been an issue before? Another run at Turley?
- Texas: They made Shaka look baaaad with his drop-ins.
- Hoops: Is Michigan playing defense?
- Out OREBbing Texas: Charles Matthews is the best we’ve had in years and years. Beilein’s got no choice but to put it down to the post.
- Is Wagner a 1st rounder after this year?

---------------------------------
1. Hoops Ups and Downs
starts at 1:00
Jordan Poole is going to be a joy. Putting too much on Charles Mathews to carry the team on both ends. MAAR is in a bit of a slump offensively but he kicks it better than he used to. Wagner is heating back up. Robinson will come back. Is Livers in line for the midseason Beilein light to go on? Texas: we’re gonna feel sad about missing Mo Bamba; big chance to change the trajectory of the season. Down year in the Big Ten.
2. The Mississippi Trio
starts at 33:24
Shea Patterson: We think he’s more of a Tate Forcier, or ceiling of a Johnny Manziel minus the off-field issues. Didn’t see a five-star quarterback, definitely don’t think he’s going to be a shoe-in to replace Peters. It’ll be a competition, but Peters has got to be the favorite. Van Jefferson is the son of an NFL receiver, and pretty productive/polished, would be immediately helpful. Deontay Anderson is big and athletic, another bullet in the safety chamber. Greg Little, et al., not happening.
3. Ace’s Hockey Podcast, wsg David Nasternak
starts at 50:48
Who are these guys? They get three points off Minnesota, get swept by Wisconsin, split with MSU? Corsi doesn’t work on State because they’re too selective with their shots. Hughes doing way too much. Hope is Top 20 bubble-ish, .500 is still a massive upgrade. Better but still first-year Beilein-ish.
4. Inside the Crooked Blue Line wsg Steve Lorenz of 247Sports
starts at 107:35
Barrett is a take; what position should he play? JaMarr Chase is Michigan’s best shot with a Louisiana guy for a long time—you never know when a new coach at an SEC school gets in the mix though. Recruiting Tremble hard. Every OL is a tackle—Petit-Frere is a battle, Patterson had a great senior film. Hufanga: got his last visit. Gotta get Reese back on campus. 2019 shaping up to be great.

WTKA Roundtable 12/7/2017: Hey You Should Know Something
He’s a pinhead. He’s a small-minded, grouchy…he’s a great coach.
Things discussed:
- Shea Patterson: Game is like Baker Mayfield, but this is a different offense and writing off Peters to beat him out is silly. Also silly: concern trolling from rival fanbases. Craig compares him to 1970s Vikings, also Jim Harbaugh.
- Sam feels good with Patterson and Van Jefferson. The safety, Anderson, could be the biggest impact one. Sam thought Michigan had Jefferson on signing day (yeah go ahead and read into that).
- Sparties gonna Spart: we feel bad for the Outback in East Lansing.
- South Carolina preview: dink and dunk offense that dies against elite defenses (hello!).
- Arizona State University and Vice President of Football Operations Herm Edwards unveiled plans for a restructured ASU football New Leadership Model approach using a general manager structure. ASU is a a collaborative approach to managing the ASU football program that includes sport and administrative divisions, which will operate as distinct, but collective units focused on elevating all aspects of the department to form a multi-layered method to the talent evaluation and recruiting processes, increase its emphasis on both student-athlete and coach development and retention, and provide a boost in resource allocation and generation.
- Is Michigan’s offense complicated? Auburn’s Wing-T system is a ton of motion and frippery to make something very simple look complicated. Michigan is sort of like that.
- Hoops talk: ideas for PG and the four? MAAR, Brooks, Poole at 1-2-3 and put Mathews at the four. Beilein offenses can’t handle a PG who won’t shoot.

WTKA Roundtable 11/30/2017: Quarterback Depth is Important, People
Everybody else on the field has visible, public accountability.
Things discussed:
- A one-possession game
- The quarterback play: Inability to execute on pass plays that were open was the difference. O’Korn took sacks he didn’t need to.
- Harbaugh schemed guys open.
- J.T. Barrett completed just two passes in this game; Hudson got one bust on a Cover 2—complaints of man all day are unfounded.
- They got THE STOP they needed; offense just needed to score on the two chances to win the game the defense game them. But okay, the defense didn’t give them a third chance.
- Metellus on the drag on K.J. Hill: why is that not LaVert (in fairness he gave up one to K.J. as well)
- The slot corner stuff on the secondary was bad luck; looking back against expectations they were exceptional. QBs caveat.
- Next year’s defense looks really good. Put Aubrey in Hurst’s spot, find a linebacker and some depth and let’s goooooo.
- Speight transfer: kind of a surprise, implies McCaffrey is pretty good, he thinks he’s even with Peters. Idea that Harbaugh had anything to do with it is laughable.
- Brian thinks it’s justified for Michigan to restrict his transfer to teams we don’t play next year (no Rutgers, Indiana, etc.)
- Defenses as good as Michigan’s have been drawing a lot more holding calls. Michigan got boned a lot on this game and vs. Wisconsin. Florida was the best officiating we got all year (and they screwed M out of a TD and called Khalid Hill for illegal downfield. Opinion: get professional referees!

Offense
starts at 1:00
We sympathize and agree with John O’Korn. Chris Evans coming out party: loved the motion stuff they did with him and Higdon on the field. Option routes are confirmed in the most horrific way imaginable. What a brilliant gameplan.
Defense
starts at 17:57
Valiant effort followed by a late fade when all hope is lost, as predicted. Hudson and Gary payoffs. Rampant first quarter, Gary went out to give them a hole. Man defense got burned when Barrett broke contain or when Khaleke missed an RPO assignment. Some pretty bad officiating, injury to Kinnel. Metellus got beat on drag routes—that’s a speed issue and concerning.
State of the Program Feels
starts at 28:14
Outlook for Brian ever getting an ad read right is bad. Outlook for the team next year is good. Defense loses Hurst, which is big, but they have a lot of highly rated bullets. Would have liked to see more from the freshman linebackers in the running to replace McCray. Secondary isn’t as starry but everyone’s back and they’ll be better than good. Offense loses the fullbacks and Cole, returns Peters, the RBs, the WRs, the TEs, and three good interior linemen. Can they find some tackles?
Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac
starts at 56:31
We play match the blowout score to the Big Ten end-of-year rivalry blowout. Anything to say about these various hilarious blowouts? Wow Nebraska. Rutgers asked everyone to leave the stadium and use the porta-potties. Playoff implications of the two teams Michigan just lost to. Coaching searches.

1. Wisconsin After UFR
starts at 1:00
Whatchya going to do? Peters was fine, not great. The power run offense couldn’t do to T.J. Edwards and co. what it could to the pushovers we faced the last three weeks. O’Korn is who he is. Significant problems with line calls looked worse than normal, Wisconsin’s defense has something to do with that. Expect Ruiz to be an upgrade next year since the 5th year center isn’t getting the line calls any better than a true sophomore should.
2. Brian’s Hawaiian Hoops Podcast
starts at 19:58
The LSU loss was only mildly catastrophic: not a bad game, explainable since their little PG was going off. A bad result however because of its outsized effect on Michigan’s schedule, which needed some big games out of this tournament. Speaking of point guard…euh. MAAR is basically the PG right now; can we get something out of Poole?
3. The Game wsg Greg Dooley
starts at 43:02
1964 Michigan football captain Jim Conley is in the store with us, so while Seth talked to Jim about the biggest badasses in Michigan history, the podcasters have to listen to Greg Dooley about the history of the 1950 Game, when Oosterbaan out-punted Ohio State in a snowstorm. This led to Woody Hayes. A lot of talking about other things.
4. Ohio State Preview wsg Seth Fisher
starts at 1:10:10
O’Korn versus this defense is not recommended. Tiny house hunters. British things. Something about colons.
