Another B1G award was given to a Michigan player this week. Haylie Wagner was awarded both Pitcher and Freshman of the week. Haylie was "lights-out" this weekend in the FAU Classic. She went 2-0 and threw 14 scoreless innings. What a wonderful performance.
Sara Driesenga won the Freshman of the week earlier this year.
Congrats to Haylie and her family. This is going to be a very special them this year. I hope everyone gets a chance to watch the team this year.
Did I miss this somehow? My Mgoblog iPod app no longer works. Furthermore, searches on iTunes store or iPod app store show no results except for the podcast - no app?!
I need my mgoblog mobile fix. Save me, Brian.
Since Michigan's 5-2 win over LSU on February 4th, the Wolverines have endured two tough losses. The February 11 road trip to Seattle ended poorly for #28 Michigan, who dropped the doubles point and all but one singles match en route to a dismal 6-1 loss at the hands of #26 Washington. Designated 1 court #6 Evan King lost in straight sets to #15 Kyle McMorrow, 6-3, 7-6. Only Barrett Franks on 5 court held on to win his singles match over Max Manthou, 7-6, 6-7, 1-0. As an added bonus, we got an awesome picture of Barrett courtesy of MGoBlue.com.
Look into those eyes. No pity lurks there.
The worst kind of loss is a rivalry loss, and Michigan's 4-3 loss to #30 Notre Dame at the Varsity Tennis Center February 18th was truly heart-rending. The match came down to 3 court featuring freshman Alex Petrone of Michigan versus Sam Keeton of Notre Dame. The match ended 3-6, 6-5, 7-6 in favor of Mr. Keeton, who dominated the third-set tiebreaker with five straight points en route to the win.
However, some positives came from the match as well. Michigan doubles again dominated, winning all three of their matches. Alex Buzzi had a nice win on 6 court, winning 7-5, 7-5. Evan King dropped the first set but ended strong, winning 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. It is unfortunate that Petrone did not come through in the clutch for Michigan, but he is only a freshman. Petrone and Zhu have nowhere to go but up, and the whole team is still young. Thank goodness we have another year with Evan King! He's so fun to watch play. In fact MGoBlue has some fairly detailed video coverage of the M-ND match available for free, if you are interested.
San Jose @ Detroit on NBC, just past the halfway point of the 1st period.
Wings up 1-0, thanks to Zetterberg.
Joey MacDonald in goal; Jimmy Howard getting a little more rest.
Ken Daniels is calling the game with Darren Pang.
Stephanie Spiereman was in the circle today and pitched a very good game. She pitched a complete game shutout. She scattered 5 hits and recorded 9 strikeouts with no walks but 2 HBP. This strong showing definitely puts her on the map in terms of starting pitchers. Who knows? Maybe coach will have 3 starting pitchers this year. That would be great.
The offense was led by Freshman C Lauren Sweet, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Bree went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Even Haylie Wagner got into the fray. She batted DP in the 4 slot and went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
This team is going to be special down the stretch so you dont want to miss a single game. Coach has to have wonderful dreams every night as this team continues to grow and jell. Keep in mind, we have 3 freshman, 2 of which has not played in the snow. I cant wait for the tix to go on sale. I think we will sell out a majority of the games, especially in late April and May.
Congrats ladies on a wonderful tournament. You all deserve M&Ms.
The Michigan Softball team won the second game of the day today by defeating Florida Atlantic 2-0. This comes off the heels of a very nice 3-0 win against #22 Kentucky.
Sara Driesenga had the ball today and pitched a complete game shutoout. She scattered 5 hits, fanned 2 strikeouts and issued no walks. Coming into today's game, Sara's ERA was a very small 0.64.
The offense was led by Chiddy. She 1 for 3 with an RBI. We only managed to eek out 3 hits but we were helped by 2 FAU errors. Crummey had a stolen base again this game. Our team speed is awesome.
We play tomorrow at 9am to wrap up the FAU Tourney. We then play next weekend in Clearwater, Florida. We should remain right around the #11 spot. I dont see the Md loss hurting too much.
