Games in BOLD are televised on the Big Ten Network
Well, it is the first day back for students after spring break so I am not really in the mood to pay attention in class (also maybe because I am a senior and I just don't care anymore). So a few friends and I began talking about the upcoming Hockey and Basketball Conference Tournaments and branched off to an argument: What is the best time of the year for sports?
I know this is football first blog, so I want to ask the MGoCommunity their opinion. Which is better, the Fall or the Spring?
Fall: start of football season for Michigan (College Football in general), and the NFL. You have the start of new NHL and NBA seasons, the beginnings of college sports like hockey and basketball (roughly fall), and the World Series.
Spring: NCAA Tournaments for Basketball and Hockey, Opening Day for baseball, The Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the NBA Playoffs, I will even throw in the NFL Draft.
As much as I love football, I think the Spring is the best time for sports. Tournaments and Playoffs are usually epic and Baseball season starting is always a fun time of year. What do you think MGoCommunity?
The women's softball team made it a clean sweep this weekend in Clearwater Florida. They were playing in the USF tourney. Today, they beat USF 7-2.
The offense was led by Bree Evans who went 2 for 4, with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Her speed makes things happen. Nicole Sappingfield went 2 for 4, with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Dorian Shaw went 2 for 3 with a double and a BB. She also had 2 RBIs. Lindsay Doyle went 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored.
The USF pitcher was slow but accurate. It took the Wolverines 5 innings to get her timing and score some runs. We scored 3 in the 5th and 4 in the 6th.
Hutch put Stephanie back on the horse today. She did rather well as compared to last night. She gave up 2ER on 3 hits, with 3 K, 1 BB and 2 HBP. JT came in to face the last 4 batters and stuck out 1, and forced the other 3 into hitting easy ground balls.
The Wolverines come basck home tonight and play in Louisville Ky next weekend. Then the following weekend is the Judi Garman Tourney. There is where we test our true metal. There will be 3 Top 25 teams to contend with.
Great job ladies. Keep up the good work. We are all proud of you.
Thank you to Hutch for so many great seasons and so many good (and not so good) memories over the years. We all love you Hutch.
Sorry for posting so late but the tournament is not updating the scores. I am using my backdoor sources to get the details.
It has already been posted that the 2nd game today was Hutch's 1200th win. That is not easy in D1 softball, especially for a team east of the Mississippi and in the North.
Michigan beat Ball State by a score of 8-3. The offense was led by Bree Evans who went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Nicole Sappingfield went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Fr. Lindsay Doyle went 2 for 3 scoring 2 runs.
We were walked 12 times today while only recording 1 strikeout. This is a good sign that the girls are really seeing the ball well. Typically umpires will not give out that many walks and will start to ring them up if they look at too many pitches.
Stephanie Speierman started on the rubber tonight. However she ran into control problems early. She only recorded 1 out, and allowed 1 run. She hit 2 batters. JT caome in and pitched 6.2 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 runs (1 ER) She struck out 8 and walked 1.
Now we need to start to worry. We are in mid-season form and Stephanie did not look good at all. I do not have any data to show that she was hurt (or hung over or maybe she tweaked her ankle jumping with excitement over the M basketball victory /s). She should not be having this type of control issues so late into the season. When conference play starts, our schedule is typically 1 game dates (few double headers).
Jr. Hilary Payne has only pitched in 2 games this year so she will have to start picking up innings in order to get into "shape" I just hope the pitching coach has her pitching 100 pitches per day to keep her loose and buld stamina.
We play USF tomorrow in the final game of the tournament. They will be heading back to AA for school then back to Louisville next weekend.
The M softball team won earlier tonight against Arkansas 8-0 in a mercy rule victory.
The Wolverines were led by Bree Evans who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Dorian Shaw went 2 for 2 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.
Jordan Taylor was in the circle today and gave up 6 hits while walking none and striking out 12. She was dominate today.
As already posted, Michigan beat Ball State 8-3 giving Hutch her 1200 victory...Stats to follow
Congratulations to Hutch.
Couldn't wait for MGoSoftball tonight. Softball mercied Arkansas 8-0 in 5 innings and beat Ball State tonight 8-3 to give coach Carol Hutchins her 1,200th all time victory. Softball is now 21-0 on the season, with USF on deck tomorrow.
Congrats to Hutch! An awesome coach and one of the finest people I know.
