Mason NEEDS this, Pistons, after all you've put him through
CBS has finally announced who David Letterman's replacement will be when he steps down in 2015. Stephen Colbert! Not the most U of M centric news at the moment, but I'm sure there are few late night tv fans on here that were waiting to find out who the lucky person would be. There is no set timetable just yet for when this transition will take place (waiting on Letterman to decide exactly when he's leaving), but apparently the contract inked is for 5 years.
I personally haven't watched late night talk shows since the whole Conan/Leno fiasco, and I never really cared for the Late Show, but now I just might be intrigued enough to tune in.
This Sunday morning is one of the great spectacles of sport: Paris-Roubaix, the cobblestone classic. It is a magnificent race, and any casual cycling fans (I know there are a few on the board) who mostly tune in to cycling only for the TdF would be well served to pay attention.
We've just come through the equally magnificent Tour of Flanders, won by Fabien Cancellara, and Cance is a narrow favorite this Sunday. Guys like Greg Van Avermaet and Sep Vanmarcke (guess where they are from) are also in great shape and could easily take a win. Van Avermaet's teammate, American Taylor Phinney, will probably be in a breakaway at some point to play the tactics that are part of what makes this race so exciting.
To get some fabulous background on the race, you can read this rundown by @inrng, who is the best cycling blogger in the business. His archives are stacked with great material on many races, both analytical and atmospheric. Cyclocosm specializes in race video recaps, which are some of the best highlight packages in any sport anywhere.
Here's his recap of last year's thriller.
Should be a great race.
1. Is this the best sporting event on the calendar, year after year?
In my opinion, yes. Beautiful venue, spring, the players are playing for more than money, they are playing for membership in the most exclusive club in golf and possibly all of sports.
2. Greatest Masters ever?
1986 Jack Nicklaus wins his 6th green jacket.
1997 Tiger Woods wins by 12 strokes.
2004(?) Phil Mickelson wins his first major on 18 and gets 3 inches of air in jubilation.
3. Who do you WANT to win, and why?
I like a guy who has paid his dues, had a great career, and would see this as a cornerstone to same. Names that come to mind are Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, and Ian Poulter (gosh did I just name 4 Europeans?)
Who will win?
Adam Scott repeats. Horse for the course, the monkey's off his back, and he is entering his prime.
You can now try your hand at playing God and creating a Solar System. Waste anywhere between minutes and hours witnessing how awful you are at forming a system of stars and planets.
Would like it more if you could go beyond 2 AU and if you could throw comets in there, along with different sizes of various planets. Maybe in future iterations.
The U of Michigan Rugby Club has been invited to participate in the Collegiate Rugby "Sevens" Championship tournament in Philadelphia May 31 and June 1.
This tournament is nationally televised on NBC and this will be the first time that M has participated.
This tournament will feature the seven a side game which will also be the version of the sport that will be played in the 2016 Olympics. For those unfamiliar with "Sevens" Rugby. Games are played on a regulation size field with seven on each side as opposed to 15 as side in the traditional game. Each half is seven minutes long - it is a track meet.
Although not as replete with men in blazers as a bowl game, there is a similar catch to M's participation. The club is responsible for the sale of 350 tickets to the event. While most of those have been purchased, the club is still short.
For those of you in the Philly area (or even NY or DC) this is a great, inexpensive way to support U of M at an exciting nationally televised event.
If you are going to purchase tickets - please use this link so the M Rugby Club gets credit for the tickets.
