Michigan has quality Ultimate teams, both Men’s and Women’s. The Men’s team finished the regular season last year ranked 16 in the nation, and had a great tournament, ending up tied for 5th. There’s a good documentary about last year’s tournament run here:
This year they’re playing well but not getting the same results. Easterns, one of the major tournaments leading up to nationals, is being played this weekend in Myrtle Beach. Last year MagnUM kinda came out of nowhere to win the tourney; this year on the first day UM went 1-3, beating NC St., playing really close games against last year’s national runner-up UNC and a very good FSU squad, losing both late. Then they seemed to lose focus in the final game against a Northwestern team that hadn’t sniffed a win going in to the last game.
In the consolation bracket, they lost this morning to Maryland, then to Carleton College, a small school but Ultimate powerhouse in Minnesota. Right now they’re playing either Northwestern or Cornell for 15th place at the tourney. Follow them here: https://twitter.com/magnUMultimate. Also, if you’re interested, the tourney semis are being streamed live right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcmVzuUwGg4
And the finals at 3:00 here: http://ultiworld.com/live/. Only available live without registering.

Carol Hutchins appeared on the Inside Michigan Sports Radio Show recently and made some public statements regardings the injury situations on the team that some of us have been concerned about. Senior pitcher Sara Driesenga has been out since the Alabama series with what Hutchins described as a "naggy minor injury", but she said she was hoping to get her back in the next "week or so". Lauren Sweet, meanwhile, suffered a sprained ankle againt Kent State. She is back on her feet, though, and is expected back "shortly". Any issues with other players Hutch wrote off as just "bumps and bruises, aches and pains" - standard things that come up in any season.
It's a relief to hear the good news on both fronts, especially for Lauren Sweet. Sweet has been having a fantastic senior season, and went down on a nasty-looking slide into home. I was afraid it was a knee injury or something long-term like that looking at the video, so it's good to hear it's not something that huge, and that she's on the mend. For us to go deep in the tournament, having her & Driesenga back at full speed will be big.
His daughter was born in the car on the way to the hospital. Apparently the mother did it her own. No assist from Helm.
The University of Michigan Alumni Association of Washington D.C. is hosting our annual fundraiser right now. The silent auction supports our clubs activities, but more importantly funds the scholarships that we give to deserving DC-area students who attend the University.
There are some pretty "a-maize-ing" items up for grabs right now, including a lifetime membership to the alumni association, tickets to football games this season and a variety of Michigan-related swag. It's a completely non-profit organization and much of the money goes back to the University in the form of need-based scholarships.
Please take the time to looks at the listings below and check back periodically as more items may be added. Bidding ends March 31st. Thanks and Go Blue!
As a distraction from the NCAA basketball and hockey tournaments that won't be featuring Michigan teams, I wanted to start a thread on the ongoing Cricket World Cup. I don't think that I have previously seen a cricket thread on this board and wanted to gauge if there were any other cricket fans amongst the mgofaithful.
The 2015 CWC is down to 4 teams. New Zealand play South Africa tonight and India face Australia Wednesday night. I am rooting for New Zealand to win the World Cup but would be ok with any team other than Australia winning it. Who are you rooting for?
