An interesting story about each team in present Top25. There is a short paragraph tracing back the nickname for each. UM, MSU, OSU, Wisc., and Nebraska are included. Most are generally known, but a few I found interesting. Most involving a change in name for one reason or the other:
Knew they were originally called the Indians, but didn’t know the student body held an election to decide on a new nickname, and Robber Barons won, the school president felt the moniker was disrespectful to school founder and railroad magnate Leland Stanford, (even though he historically was considered one).
After name change from Michigan Agricultural College, wanted a name change to disassociate from “Aggies”, after a vote the winning entry “Staters” was deemed too unimaginative for the sports editor of the Lansing State-Journal, so he decided to choose another one and started calling them the Sportans, which he later changed to Spartans..
Originally called the Webfoots. Californians used it as a derisive nickname for their rain-soaked neighbors to the north, while Oregonians embraced the moniker with pride. However, the present “Ducks” nickname emerged out of sportswriters’ need for a shortened version of Webfoots to appear in headlines. (Again the power of the press.)
With OT threads about to disappear into the horizon, I thought tonight might be a good time to pick the board's brain for any delicious, outrageous, or just strange MGoRecipes. I know there have been a few of these threads in the past, but a quick search for "recipe" doesn't show many results, or I would link to them here.
So, whether it's for tailgating, dinner, snack/appetizer, or drink recipes, what do any of you make that I (and everyone else) am missing out on?
I'll start things off by posting one I learned last year for making chicken salad, to make this you need about three pounds of chicken (one of the boneless/skinless packages found at any grocery store works just fine), one large onion, one green pepper, cayenne pepper, Zesty Italian Dressing, vegetable oil, and mayo.
- Poke holes in chicken, rub with cayenne pepper to taste.
- Put chicken in a freezer bag with the dressing, refrigerate in this package overnight.
- Empty contents of bag onto a cookie tray, cook at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, or until done.
- Finely dice pepper and onion, sauté with vegetable oil.
- Cut chicken into small cubes, add pepper and onion.
- Add mayo to taste.
This has been well received by just about everyone I've shared it with, and it's one of my favorite sandwiches to make at home. Someone here (the evidence points to mgokev) posted a dip recipe when Brian asked for tailgating recipes, but since that post was for charity and has since been edited to remove instructions, I'll leave it to him to post it. I can say it's quite good.
Here's your last chance to get something off your chest, pos bang or get banged, or post something funny that has nothing to do with anything. Because BiSB says tonight is it, then tomorrow we're in in-season lockdown. So if you've been saving something all summer, do it now or forever (read- January) hold your peace.
In tragic Muppet news, Jerry Nelson (voice of The Count, among others), has died at the age of 78.
A little info and plenty of memories via the link. RIP.
A friend of mine is putting together a corn hole tournament to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Bdubs in Ypsi agreed to host the event. There will be live bands and a DJ, winner will take home $500, and most importantly, there will be drink specials. Here is the facebook page for the event. The event is detailed more there, along with how to register.
Well, we made it. This time a week from now there will be College Football to discuss. Tomorrow (or sunday, or whatever) starts Game Week.
As such, here is the last Friday Open Thread and I'm getting it started early. What was the best memory of your summer? What 1 play would make you happiest going into the season? Best new beer you tried this summer? Favorite Tailgate food?
And the big question that's a little more on topic:
Where will you be watching Michigan Football in 7 days and change??? (MGoShoe Countdown goes here)
