Pretty Posts Sticky
Wondering how to blockquote? Don't know how to embed videos? This sticky is your go-to thread for help with making your comment or thread look as good as the most computer literate users here, hopefully in steps simple enough for [rival joke here] to understand. Before we get to it, there have been helpful threads in the past, such as this one from ShockFX (which goes into more plain text detail than I will here). I'm not promising anything revolutionary as much as providing a link for "one stop shopping" to help people with common problems.
How do I get a quote to show up in the fancy yellow box?
- Click "switch to plain text editor". This is a link at the bottom of the text box for either a comment or post/diary.
- Write out <blockquote></blockquote>
- Paste your quote between ><
- Switch back to rich text editor. This button is in the same spot at the bottom of the text box as plain text editor.
- Format as needed: this is just trial and error. If you're really stuck it's not the end of the world, it sometimes takes practice.
How do I embed a video?
- Click "switch to plain text editor". This is a link at the bottom of the text box for either a comment or post/diary.
- On YouTube, click "share" and "embed".
- Copy the link that appears.
- Paste the link into the text box.
- Switch back to rich text editor. This button is in the same spot at the bottom of the text box as plain text editor.
- Look for a box. It should have a red outline and say either "flash" or "iframe". If you see this, you've succeeded; congrats.
How do I embed a video in a forum topic or diary?
Follow the instructions immediately above, but after clicking "share" on YouTube, you need to check the box below it that says "use old embed code".
I don't know how to embed a picture in my comment or post/diary.
- The easiest way to do this is to drag the picture from a site hosting it (such as Google Images, Facebook, ect.). You can left click your mouse on the picture and select "view" in Firefox or "open in new tab" in Chrome. Make the window smaller and drag the image into the text box.
- When commenting on a thread, story or diary, the comment box has a line of options at the top, with options like bold, italics, ect. On the far right is a little picture. Click this picture and paste the URL of the picture you would like included. You can obtain the URL by left clicking the image and selecting "copy image location".
Note: .gifs work the same way as pictures. Either of these instructions will work for GIFs.
I want to embed a Tweet in a comment.
- Click "switch to plain text editor". This is a link at the bottom of the text box for either a comment or post/diary.
- On the tweet you want to embed, click where it says "More"
- On the drop-down, select "Embed Tweet"
- Copy the code that appears
- Paste the code into the post
- Switch back to rich text editor. This button is in the same spot at the bottom of the text box as plain text editor.
Note: I'm told this does not work for forum topics or diaries. Sorry.
I've seen some posts use a fancy link that's part of the text. I want to do that too.
- Highlight the text you want to turn into a blue link.
- Click the blue globe on the top of the text box.
- Paste the URL you'd like to link to.
- Click "OK".
I want to get fancier than that.
To make the link open in a new window or tab:
- After clicking the globe and pasting the URL, click "target" and switch to "New Window (_blank)"
To underline links:
- While the text is highlighted, hit "ctrl" (Command for Apple users) and then "u" on your keyboard.
I need to create a table and copy/paste from Excel looks messy.
- Go to this link.
- Paste the table you have into the box and "Tableize It!"
- Click "switch to plain text editor". This is a link at the bottom of the text box for either a comment or post/diary.
- Paste the information the website spits out as "your table"
- Switch back to rich text editor. This button is in the same spot at the bottom of the text box as plain text editor.
- Format as needed. This usually means (for me) making sure there aren't a bunch of lines between the text and the table.
I still need help; the sticky isn't covering my problem.
Leave a comment here. We're fortunate to have a lot of knowledgeable and friendly posters here on the board, and someone will have an answer for you.
Notes:
- Thanks to Raoul, Seth and MGoShoe for their work in the suggestions thread, and Michigan Shirt for the ShockFX link; some of the work above is yours and this is my way of giving you credit.
- Thank you everyone who made suggestions in the prior thread.
- Irrelevant comments made while this is on the front board will be deleted after it's off, this space should be kept clean for Q&A's.
- Questions, other tips not accounted for here or pointing out something I've done wrong in the OP are all highly encouraged.
Hide Negative Posters Script
EDIT: Hmm, so it works fine when I load it from my own machine, but if I load it from the link it doesn't seem to work, even though it seems to be exactly the same code. I'll try to figure this out before the next release.
EDIT EDIT: Alright, if you download the zip file from the link below, unpack it, and open the file in chrome, it works. This is much more complicated than just clicking the link. Many apologies.

Alright everyone. In the site improvements thread from earlier today, someone mentioned that my suggestion of allowing us to block users with negative points might be able to be taken care of via a greasemonkey script.
I hadn't ever tried them before, but it turns out hiding posts by users with negative points is actually pretty simple. Anyway, if you're in Chrome or if you have GreaseMonkey installed on FireFox, clicking this link should allow you to install the script.
DISCLAIMER: I haven't put anything purposely malicious into this, but I also haven't ever written a GreaseMonkey script before, so there's always a possibility that this will cause other sites to go haywire. For instance, I haven't put any checking in to make sure you're actually on MGoBlog, etc. Try at your own risk.
When I've got more time I'm going to try to tweak it so you can adjust point thresholds, etc. All this does is look for the - in front of the point total. Thresholds would require parsing the points, which I wasn't able to do in the half hour I spent putting this together.
Enjoy!
OT - Official MGoBaby Thread (you got 'em, we want to see 'em)
Since MGoUsers weasel3216 inspired it and Feat of Clay asked for it, here is your official MGoBaby thread. Post your favorite pictures of your little ones - recent or old - if you feel so inclined. In other words, post 'em if you got 'em!
(For all you I Hate OT Threaders: Beware! If you neg posts with pictures of babies you are not human and will be doomed to having cute little babies of your own that wake 10 times in the night for 2 years and learn to say your spouse's name first. I mean, who doesn't like pictures of cute babies that are going to grow up Michigan fans?? Also, its the off-season and of the 15 most recent posts on the Board, only 3 of them directly pertain to Michigan sports. So consider this note a preemptive "get over it.")
How much do you really hate ohio?
Some people say the Michigan-ohio rivalry is only one sport, but it definitely isn't to me. I hope those shitheads lose in every single game they play in every sport (unless it somehow helps Michigan). I've even seen people on here say they'd root for ohio over Sparty in basketball. Are you kidding me? Ohio is the enemy always.
OT-Two new Wolverine Fans have joined us (UPDATED WITH PHOTOS FROM TONIGHT)
Last night my wife delivered, via c-section, our twins. Ellis and Henrik; Ellis weighed 3 lb 12 oz and Henrik weighed 3 lb 14 oz. and were born at 10:26 and 10:28 respectively. They were 34 weeks along and are doing great. Henrik was hooked up to oxygen for a few hours this morning but is now breathing all on his own and both had had their first feeding this morning. They may have a long or short road through the NICU (only time will tell), but all signs are pointing in the right direction.
My wife and I had to go through IVF, through a doctor in Michigan, and it has been a hell of a process. Even with all of the ups and downs of the IVF and then the pregancy, i have never been this happy in my life.
Both Ellis and Henrik are holding out for the Michigan lacrosse scholarship, but do hold offers from Dad's Backyard Lacrosse.
UPDATED: photo on left is Ellis and right is Henrik. I was able to hold and feed Ellis tonight and it was amazing. Thank you everyone, this blog is amazing.

OT: Real Estate / Renting / Land Contract gurus
Hello fantastic mgoblog community.
I was inspired by another posters relocation question earlier this week, and the out pouring of support they received and decided to ask my own question. I know this is not a forum for legal/real estate advice. But, we have a great community and I thought i would give it a shot.
Mods, delete if needed. Thanks everyone!
I recently started a job out of state and put my house up for sale.
We had 3 full price offers on the first weekend and accepted an offer. We were excited that things seemed to be moving in the right direction- and quickly. The house ended up appraising at +30k (!!!!!!) less than what we needed to appraise at. Our realtor, throughout the process, said it would appraise. We had the house appraised earlier this year (for a refinance) and used that info when pricing the house.
We are massively under water and are researching alternatives. Selling seems out because the loan is upside down. Renting and Land Contract seem like viable options.
Has anyone had any experience renting out their home or being involved with a land contract?
Any professionals out there have any addtional insight?
My family and I thank you for your input.
