#20 Michigan played their first-ever game as a ranked team today.
The opponent was UMBC (Maryland-Baltimore County) at The Big House in front of 582 fans.
Michigan led 6-4 at half in this one and held on for the 10-7 win. Ian King and Brent Noseworthy scored 6 of the 10 Wolverine goals as they both had their usual hat tricks.
With this win, Michigan is now 1-0 all-time as a ranked team. This will be the first winning season in the program's 6 year history.
Michigan is now 8-1 and will head into B1G play next weekend. Every team in the B1G is ranked.
The Wolverines will open the B1G season at #10 Maryland next Saturday at 2pm on ESPNU.
DIdn't realize WD had made a post about the result of this game so I didn't need to update it sorry. Figured i'd leave this part at least though. Good W today and GO BLUE!!!
A quick side note: there was a little discussion on the board earlier in the week about new Division 1 teams and I mentioned that, lamentably, there are no new programs on the horizon. But, the very next day, St. Bonaventure’s (in Buffalo, NY) announced they would be adding a D-1 program which will start play in 2019. That’s some good news. Still waiting on that Utah rumor though...
In the latest Maverik Men's Lacrosse Division 1 Media Poll, Michigan is ranked for the first time ever. Our boys come in ranked #20, after going 7-1 to open the season.
Michigan is coming off its first victory over a ranked opponent after they beat #10 Penn last Saturday. They were not ranked after last weekend, but they got some help as a few teams at the back of the Top 20 rankings fell out.
In an email to alumni last week Coach John Paul, said that despite the victory he was glad they weren't ranked because he wants the team to stay hungry. They'll have to defend their new ranking when they take on a feisty UMBC team that beat Stony Brook this weekend. That game is at the Big House on Saturday at 1PM.
It's been a topsy-turvy season in the college lacrosse world this year. Ohio State whomped #1 Denver yesterday opening the door for your new #1: Rutgers. I shit you not. The Scarlet Knights are 8-0 and beat Princeton last week and are on fire. All B1G teams are ranked now - Penn State is #3, Ohio State is #4, Maryland is #10 and Hopkins is #17. The rest of the season could be pretty wild. Schedule is gonna get hard as hell for Michigan. But who gives a damn - LET'S DO IT!! GO BLUE!!!
There's hardly been any good things that have happened this season for Michigan Women's Lacrosse.
The season started out 0-5 with losses against teams Michigan has beaten as recently as last year easily.
The Wolverines took out their frustrations last week in a record-setting beatdown of Detroit in a 21-11 win.
Today they took on Ohio State down at the empty Horseshoe in Columbus.
Michigan had never beaten OSU prior to today, 0-4 but last year's game was very close.
Lauren Oberlander had a hat trick in the first half, but Michigan still trailed, 6-4.
The Wolverines would eventually go on a run to take an 11-8 lead with just 4:57 left to play. OSU would score 3 goals in the final 5 minutes, including the game-tying goal with just 43 seconds left.
The game would go into OT. But this time, there would be no refs to save OSU.
Michigan's all-time leading scorer, Kim Coughlan, would score the game-winning OT goal.
Michigan picks up the biggest win the program's 4 year history. They shock Ohio State, 12-11 in OT at the Horseshoe. The first win by any Michigan team at that hell hole since 2000.
This is the first conference win in program history.
Michigan is now 3-7 and 1-0 in the B1G. The team returns to The Big House to take on the Big Purple Machine on Thursday afternoon, which will be on BTN.
A lot of things were happening today all at the same time.
Michigan entered today's game against #10 Penn in the Michigan Stadium opener with an 0-27 record all-time against ranked opponents.
The Michigan Men, while not playing a great schedule, have done what they needed to do. Going 6-1 heading into this big showdown with an Ivy League team at home.
Michigan raced out to a 7-2 lead against the Quakers with the lead being cut to 3 at halftime.
Penn would outshoot Michigan by 15 and would score two goals in the final minute to cut Michigan's lead to one goal, but the Wolverines held on for the 13-12 win.
Brent "The Nose" Noseworthy had his 5th hat trick of the season, along with Ian King who also had a hat trick.
Noseworthy has 25 goals. The B1G season has not even started yet. He will become the single season goal scoring leader (32) very shortly.
Michigan did the following with today's win
- Beat a ranked team for the first time ever
- Beat an Ivy League team for the first time ever
- Clinched a winning season for the first time ever
- Pushed the win total to 7 wins, which is the most in program history
The Wolverines will play their next game against UMBC, two weeks from today at The Big House.
Lacrosse is back home from its spring break trip and sits at 6-1 after beating a plucky Furman team 7-5 last Saturday. Unfortunately, the game is in the Big House at 1 o'clock, the same time as the Minnesota game, so I expect the attendance to be close to 0.
Michigan and Penn played a close one last year and I would argue that Michigan had a number of opportunities to take control of the game but didn't. Michigan will have its work cut out for it though because Penn is better this year. The Quakers have beaten Virginia and Navy in close games and lost by a goal in a shoot-out vs #3 Penn State. Michigan has improved as well but their high-flying offense has come down to earth in recent games. They need King and Noseworthy to be major factors today.
In other news - the B1G looks like the strongest conference in college lacrosse this year. Every team but Michigan is currently ranked including the #2 (Maryland) and #3 (Penn State) teams. The B1G teams have only 3 losses between them - two to a #1 Notre Dame team and one to #19 Princeton. Michigan has only one unranked team left on the schedule before conference play begins. Their schedule now goes from being incrediibly easy to incredibly hard. Let's see how they handle it - Go Blue!
