I know the tweets were shared re: Harbaugh announcing HC Queen and working the down marker on the chain gang but the Mercury News did an article with a bit more video coverage, plus.. HARBAUGH.
Thought it was worth sharing.
Pretty smart if you are scouting an O Lineman to be right on the line of scrimmage while watching the game.
Found this in the annals of MGoBlog history. Poor guy went from some genuinely positive takes by Brian to an analytical qualifier for opposing coaches and came to define "stupid coaching decisions that fly in the face of game theory."
Zook to the Illini
Ron Zook has taken the Illinois job.
Thoughts: good move for the Illini. Zook obviously connected quite strongly with his players at UF, even though he didn't win as much as they would have liked. For all the kvetching from UF fans, Chris Leak was a freshman last year, a sophomore this year. it's really tough to win with a young QB under center. Zook brought in a couple monster classes as Florida head coach and he's got name recognition. If he can turn UI into the natural destination for the Chicagoland area he can make UI a winner.
Sorry, but I thought this deserved a thread of its own. I just noticed that Illinois' back-up QB is Jeff George Jr., son of the former Purdue and Illinois QB, who was one of the most unlikable people ever to play football. A couple connections we have with Jeff George Sr.:
- We beat him twice (I believe) when he was at Illinois, including in 1989, when the Illini came into the game as the No. 8 team in the country.
- When he was with the Colts, nobody really liked him, and the fans were VERY happy when a certain James Harbaugh came on to replace him as their quarterback. This article from the Indianapolis Star summed up Colts' fans feelings about George Sr. and Harbaugh:
"Indianapolis fell in love with Harbaugh, in part because he was the anti-Jeff George, a superstar talent whose less-than-superstar results and aloof air – think Jay Cutler – rubbed people the wrong way. Jeff George was not what the city of Indianapolis craved in a leader. Jim Harbaugh was, and he gave this city what it loved."
Anyway, Jeff George Jr. is now Illinois' back-up QB, which means that Jeff George Sr. might be at the Big House on Saturday.
Oh, and you have to check out Jeff George Jr.'s bio page and photo - because yes, he has a mullet. Click here.
Bye week is over so I'm back.
Hit me up with your questions for this week!
Harbaugh presser as he talks about Kalis....
Forget Hulk smash, this is Harbaugh smash.
Edit: Go to 2:50 of the following video. Sorry, no idea how to embed.
Kinda random, but I feel like it's necessary to give a shoutout to Chris Evans, who's our best running back (statistically) through 7 weeks. After taking a look, our RB numbers are as follows:
Evans: 48 attempts, 400 yards, 3TDs, 8.3avg; 4 receptions, 28 yards, 0TDs, 7.0avg
Higdon: 35 attempts, 259 yards, 5TDs, 7.4avg; No receiving stats
Smith: 61 attempts, 336 yards, 2TDs, 5.5avg; 10 receptions, 21 yards, 0TDs, 2.1avg
Isaac: 53 attempts, 291 yards, 4TDs (career high), 5.5avg; 1 reception, 21 yards, 0TDs, 21.0avg
The good thing is all of our RB numbers are looking pretty healthy, but thus far Evans has been able to churn out more production with less touches. As a true freshman he's exceeded my expectations personally, and it's worth noting that we haven't even scratched the surface with what he can do as a receiver. I expect his skills to be in full bloom entering The Game. It's good to know we're in good good hands when it comes to coaching and player personnel now, and in the future. Here's to continuing our road to the playoffs! (Knock on wood)
