In the past, moms have let these threads stand for a bit, and it's expanded the size of our group by a person or two each year. However, in the past I think I remembered to get these up before game week, so if it's too much board clutter, accept my apology and feel free to delete.
Anyway: we do indeed have a game watching group in Charlottesville, VA and it meets each week at LW's Livery Stable on the downtown mall. There is a facebook group where I post reminders that the group will be meeting, etc.
The Livery Stable's listed opening time is not until 5p on Saturdays, but if there is a noon or 3.30 game they always open for us.
We have a nice group where about 10 or so people consistently show up, and we've had up to 30+ for big games before.
Here is the link for the group page:
BUTTHURT EDIT: Previously the post was titled "Where do I watch the game in Charlottesville, VA," which is funny, because joke. Now I had to change the title to something lame because everyone is angry.
MOD EDIT - Reinstated the joke, but generalized to conform with an experiment we're going to try with making the first "Where Can I..." thread the all-purpose thread for such inquiries. See appropriate diary - LSA
POST MOD EDIT: Here is the link to the google map Michigan bar locator. Our CVille Bar is up to date and on the map. Obviously can't speak to any others.
This is the first of what will be weekly videos 247's Steve Lorenz and I will do during the season. The focus going forward is likely to be Big Ten picks, but in today's we picked our breakout player, MVP, and regular-season record for Michigan. Hope y'all enjoy.
I'm guessing these will go in a UV in the future, but during season preview week I figured I'd throw it on the board.
I guess I am a sick puppy because I try to make sense out of Draftageddon. I do think there is some helpful insight as to which programs are likely to do better and who to look out for as dangermen throughout the season. With that, here we go:
Draft by School:
|EAST TOTAL||68||EAST TOTAL||72|
|WEST TOTAL||36||WEST TOTAL||32|
Results: Let's look to last year to see how accurate this way of looking at it is. OSU was by far the best team (other than that one game where they forgot how to coach) and that was supported by their number of draft picks. M and MSU were pretty even (except for that thing that didn't happen as far as I can recall). That was born out in the numbers also. PSU was the next toughest and that held true also. Over in the west, the crew pretty much missed on Iowa completely, but their numbers for Wisconsin & Nebraska probably accurately reflected the relative strength of those teams. Based on this Northwestern over performed.
So this year, yep, Michigan homerism certainly shows. But probably not as bad as last year as many of the players are now known entities. So, OSU will still be tough, but probably a shade less so than last year. MSU takes a pretty big dip. PSU & Indiana will be middle of the pack upset specialists (both ways). It looks like the crew came around on Iowa with little to no change for everyone else, except maybe Northwestern continues on last years good year.
But who really has the good talent? Last year I also looked at who had the most picks in the first 10 rounds to see if the talent was concentrated in a few schools. Here's what it looks like:
Draft picks in the first 10 rounds:
|EAST TOTALS||27||EAST TOTALS||33|
|WEST TOTALS||13||WEST TOTALS||7|
Results: So, yeah, homerism be damned, no one is even close to Michigan in elite talent this year. A significant reduction for OSU from last year. Last year, the MGoCrew thought MSU had a lot of talent but not much of it was elite. In fact, they thought Michigan and MSU were equal in elite talent. That was probably spot on. Indiana may finally win one of those games they are not supposed to because they have a couple high end talents this year. Other than Iowa (and NW) the west looks pretty pedestrian. Althought the split between East and West appears to be a little more narrow this year. How the heck did PSU finish...oh yeah, Franklin. 2016, even less talent and more Franklin!!! I don't think that ends well.
Now the most helpful thing I looked at last year. Based on the draft, what does the first team and second team all B1G look like. To make this suffering come to an end, I will not post last years teams, but trust me, last year was pretty spot on minus a few unforseed out of nowhere type players.
Your 2016 First & Second Team ALL-B1G based on Draftageddon:
|2016 First Team||2016 Second Team|
|QB||JT Barrett||OSU||QB||CJ Beathard||IA|
|RB||Saquan Barkley||PSU||RB||Justin Jackson||NW|
|RB||Corey Clement||UW||RB||LJ Scott||MSU|
|WR||Jehu Chesson||UM||WR||Chris Godwin||PSU|
|WR||Jordan Westercamp||NE||WR||Amara Darboh||UM|
|TE||Jake Butt||UM||TE||George Kittle||IA|
|OT||Cole Croston||IA||OT||Michael Dunn||MD|
|OT||Nick Gates||NE||OT (QB)||Erik Magnuson||UM|
|OG||Dan Freeney||IN||OG||Jacob Bailey||IN|
|OG||Sean Welsh||IA||OG||Billy Price||OSU|
|C||Pat Elfein||OSU||C||Mason Cole||UM|
|DE||Dwauane Smoot||IL||DE||Sam Hubbard||OSU|
|DE||Taco Charlton||UM||DE||Tyquan Lewis||OSU|
|DT||Malik McDowell||MSU||DT||Ryan Glasgow||UM|
|DT||Chris Wormley||UM||DT||Mo Hurst||UM|
|LB||Raekwon McMillian||OSU||LB||Josey Jewell||IA|
|LB||Nyeem Wartman-White||PSU||LB||Riley Bullough||MSU|
|LB(HSP)||Jabrill Peppers||UM||LB(HSP)||Anthony Walker||NW|
|CB||Jourdan Lewis||UM||CB||Gareon Conley||OSU|
|CB||Desmond King||IA||CB||Will Likely||MD|
|S||Godwin Iguebuke||NW||S||Marcus Allen (NTMA)||PSU|
|S||Nate Gerry||NE||S||Dymonte Thomas||UM|
|P||Kenny Allen||UM||P||Ryan Santoso||MN|
|K||Griffen Oaks||IN||K||Drew Brown||NE|
Results: Well, you can see why the MGoCrew is so high on Michigan this year. Players sprinkled across the first and second team offense and defense (even special teams). You can also see why OSU is not going away. Their defense should keep them in games and JT Barrett with just enough of an O-line will still score some points. Iowa should be able to score some points, the defense is a little more of a question mark. No MSU to be found anywhere in the secondary and only a DT and one LB up front should make this D a little easier to gain yards on. Indiana has two O-lineman. Is Jordan Howard gone? Yes. Ok. Whew!
I hope this brings a little more insight into the glory that is Draftageddon 2016. Now, log your complaints to the owners and proprietors. I just drink here.
Just caught a program alert on BTN saying there was a press conference coming up at 2:25pm
**I took some notes to post here for those that couldn't watch the news conference. Picked a random response on the first page so they wouldn't get buried on one of the later pages of this thread. This isn't all quotes, had to do some short-hand notes/paraphrasing to keep up...apologize in advance for any typos or names incorrectly spelled**
Been very good from day 1. Play/competition very good, been improving daily/weekly. All QBs playing at very high level
Do you know starting QB? Will you say before game on Saturday?
Yes they know, they will say before Saturday. I didn’t say I was going to say it before YOU on Saturday.
Jake/Chris on being captains:
2 of the hardest workers, both have great way of being good teammates. Build up other guys around them and make themselves smaller, which makes them big in the eyes of their teammates. Talk/Coach the young players well. Caught Jake helping the young TE’s on several occasions. Chris gives advice to the young defensive lineman (specifically mentioned Ron and Rashan). Captains were voted on by the players. Coach’s votes/freshman votes did not count. That’s why it’s a great honor and means so much.
When you have several worthy candidates for QB, what helps make decision?
All the guys haven’t played in the games in terms of experience. Each has game experience, but here, game experience, want to see the things that will really translate to the games in terms of moving the offense, converting 3rd downs, getting team in end zone, avoiding mistakes that hurt drives and avoid turnovers. Those above all on the list have been what’s been evaluated.
With the addition of Biff Poggi, what do you anticipate his role to be?
No little people, everyone has a role. We all have things that we’re good at and not so good at. Everyone does a little and it adds up to a lot. Has found that to be the case on good, great, championship teams. Football-wise, he’s a line coach at heart and has a great love/affection for it. Biff is good at everything across the board. Trusted agent and known friend.
Bredeson still have a shot at the LT spot?
Yeah everybody is in the mix. Unique thing about college fb is there’s no preseason or warm-up games. Practice/competition rages on. Want guys to put themselves in the position to be ready when called upon. Ben is very close, I wouldn’t anticipate any not playing. He’s acquitting himself very well right now.
Advantage for Hawaii to have worked out some of their kinks or bigger advantage to have film on them first?
They have a very capable rb, qb, good football team. It will come down to when we play good, we’re darn tough to beat. When we don’t, we’re susceptible to be beat. I think that will be the case as well.
What other true frosh will knock on the door to get playing time?
With everything that our frosh have going on, being in summer school. Great way to get their feet under them and get some credits and getting to know the landscape. The rigor at the U of M. Build a great foundation for themselves academically. At football practice, that was the only part of the day they were involved in football (weren’t involved in classroom portion). Wanted to see what they could do athletically, run, catch, track the ball, play with vision, etc. We thought there were quite a few players tracking to be in the 2/3-deep. Last week been catching them up more on the schemes. Thinks they will play in the games soon and there will be a good number of them. David Long covered a go-route in yesterday’s practice as good as it could possibly be covered. From press coverage to the point when the ball got to the receiver, it’s as good as could have been covered. Competitive waters have been boiling.
Do the QBs know who the starter is?
Yes Ben Gedeon, went from role player to this is his defense…? Great player, worker, he’s a football player. Authority figure? That was your word, not mine. That’s not a word that comes to my mind.
No depth chart yet, does that mean there’s still competition for the positions, is that a good thing this close to the season?
I always thought of that as a good thing. Iron sharpening iron. Very good thing that’s written in the bible, from the word of God
Asked about Kaep/anthem?
I acknowledge his right to do that. I don’t respect the motivation or the action.
This time last year still a lot of unknowns, how has that differed this year & with expectations, are they meet-able?
That discussion has been raging on and we’re looking forward to having at it. Can’t wait to watch guys compete
With schedule starting how it is (implied weakness of schedule starting out) is it hard not to look forward?
Football is rough sport, don’t want to show lack of respect towards opponents each week. Very respectful approach for each and every game we play.
Will Kenny do all 3 aspects of kicking?
He can, but don’t know if he will. Kenny is best at all 3 (punting, kickoffs, field goals). If that remains the case, he will do all three. Would like him to not have to do all three. Closer competition in kickoffs and field goals. Quinn close in those. Ryan Tice (spelling?) making a lot of field goals, doing a good job. We’ll see.
How much have Jabrill and Jourdan been on offense, specifically Jabrill?
We don’t go into that. There’s options, they’re all on the table. Anything to share on injuries, long-term injuries? No, nothing for public consumption.
Hopefully I will be forgiven for this being slightly late and if this is unacceptable MOD's please just delete.
Many were looking for a Pick'em group to get into last week as one already posted had filled up. I just got around to creating one and wanted to put it out for other Michigan Fans to join.
Yahoo is the site
MGoBloggers is the group and password is GoBlue16
Again if this is an issue just delete. I had thought about posting it in the other thread, but figured nobody would see it. Thanks guys
No reason on why suspended. Gibson was touted dual threat QB in High School. Troubled with hamstring injuries throughout Spring camp.
