this week in unintentionally grim-sounding recruiting headlines
Everyone running around like it's the final act of Animal House need to get a grip. We have a coach under contract. That coach has 22 returning starters. We have a cake schedule in 2011.
I've been hearing all this whining. He can't come back now? He looked defeated. Why not? He's almost has his recruting class completed and he's already at work. You know how he'll show up for work? He'll get up and drive over and start working and in a week this will all be over and people will be worrying about who's visiting for the Kansas basketball game and then it will be signing day.
Then all the fans that gave up will start hearing that T. Lewan is now lifting houses over his head and that M. Jones is looking like the next coming of D. Jones and the secondary is looking good and people will get excited again. The Spring Game will come and F. Toussiant will bust a couple of big runs and we'll say D. Hart who?
Soon enough it will be August again and it will be time for put up or shut up, but it's going to be fine.
All this Harbaugh talk is boring. What if Harbaugh says no? Is Venables on the radar? Cuz this guy has been a DC for a long time. I'm surprised he hasn't been tapped as a coach, and he's a defensive minded coach, which is what Michigan should try. Clearly the Offensive minded coach thing isn't working out like excepted.
As much as everyone seems to throw Brady Hoke under the bus, he is a legitimate candidate for the hypothetical coaching vacancy.
In 2008, he took bottom-dweller Ball State to an undefeated MAC record and national ranking
In 2010, he turned around a mediocre San Diego State team into a solid season including a bowl win with completely understandable and close losses to TCU, Utah, and Mizzou.
In 2011, he would unite the fractured fan base which has created huge program perception problems.
Although Harbaugh is clearly the #1 option, I think there are too many influential alumni/former players who would not support any candidate without ties to the Bo-tree. This vaults Hoke over the Randy Shannons of the world.
Just got a text that Harbaugh said he wasn't going to Michigan. He will stay at STanford if he decides to stay in college, but otherwise is going to the NFL. Has anyone else heard this?
President Coleman has shown in the past that she wants to be the final interview for a new head coach. Last time it was in Toledo, which means media people will be watching 23 and 275 south this time.
She is likely to do an out of town again, which means either flying out of Detroit Metro, driving to Lansing, or driving to Grand Rapids (either to meet or to catch a flight). I think Lansing is unlikely given the sheer number of MSU fans there who would narc in a second.
The team is also required to interview at least one black coach for the job under NCAA affirmative action rules--but I don't know if she would spend her time as part of that process. She may, given her vocal AA support. That would give us two interviews. Likely at different times because it would be a little demeaning for a black interviewee to meet the guy who is really being interviewed at the site.
Anyone seeing any sign of travel from Coleman, this is the thread to post in, please.
