For those who like to keep track of Michigan sports alumni, Tim Hardaway Jr. led the Atlanta Hawks to a 114-112 OT victory over the San Antonio Spurs tonight. He tied his career high with 29 points, 9 of those in overtime, and almost single-handedly sparked the team's fourth-quarter surge.
I was at the game and Hardaway's energy, hustle, and leadership down the stretch were palpable. Despite not being a starter, he played the entire fourth quarter and overtime. He was tasked with defending Kahwi Leonard for most of the overtime period and the Spurs star was a non-factor (the only Leonard bucket I noticed came over another Hawks player). He even did a great job defending LaMarcus Aldridge in the post on a couple possessions.
He's still only 24 years old and things appear to have finally clicked for him in Atlanta. If he can keep growing at the rate he has this season, he has the potential for a long career as an offensive spark plug, similar to another Michigan alumnus, Jamal Crawford.
WBB rang in the new year with a dominating win at the Kohl Center earlier today.
Most of the team struggled with the best player on the team, Katelynn Flaherty, having only 8 points and going 0-7 from 3 point range. Flaherty is the all-time leader in 3 pointers and is averaging 18.5 PPG this season.
It was sophomore big Hallie Thome and freshman phenom Kysre Gondrezick that willed the Wolverines to victory, accounting for 53(!!!!) of the team's 73 points.
Hallie Thome had the second-highest scoring game in Michigan history.
37 points. 14 rebounds. 13-15 FGs.
Kysre had 16 points.
Gondrezick and Thome are the highest ranked recruits Michigan has ever signed, and both are underclassmen.
Michigan is now 13-3 and 2-0 in the B1G. They'll travel and face #14 OSU (12-4, 2-0 B1G) on Saturday in the only regular season game both teams will play against each other.
Should be a high-scoring game and all-out mayhem. Both teams play high tempo styles.
Refs were hot garbage as expected but the refs didn't give up 86 points to stinky Iowa who is starting one player who is NOT a freshman.
This is a bad loss.
I don't understand it at all. Everyone is healthy, including multiple, living and breathing senior starters for the first time since 2012.
I like Beilein a lot but I'm starting to have some doubts now. Was 2012-2014 just a perfect storm?
B1G opener on the road. Contain Jok and let's open 2017 with a W on the road.
My father in law is thinking about renting the Wolverine Den for a BB game. For those who have been to a game in there, questions:
(1) It looks really high up on the map. As in, $6 seat high up. How is the view?
(2) Are there any other benefits? (TV screens, etc.)
(3) How are the seats/bar stools? comfortable?
It just doesn't seem worth it to me, but I told him I would ask my mgofriends.
After a strong non-conference where Michigan assembled a 12-3 record with a win over a ranked team and 2 of 3 losses coming against Top-10 teams, Michigan opened B1G play earlier this afternoon against a longtime nemesis of head coach Kim Barnes Arico.
Before Michigan, she was at St. John's. A rival of Rutgers in which she turned the tide in that rivalry.
This was one of two Rutgers sports that are respectable (the other being W Soccer which went to the Final Four last year). This because they have the coaching legend C. Vivian Stringer leading their program.
Noticed I said was. Rutgers is terrible this year, entering the game today with a 3-11 record.
RU took an early lead but Michigan fixed that in the first quarter and never looked back. It was a one point Michigan lead at half, but the Wolverines pulled away at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Prized freshman recruit Kysre Gondrezick is really starting to come along, as she again Michigan in scoring with 18.
She was one of four Wolverines to get into double figures, as the NJ native Katelynn Flaherty had 13, Jillian Dunston had 11 and Hallie Thome had 10.
Michigan would go on to win, 63-50. The program's first win over Rutgers (0-4 prior to today) and a 1-0 start in B1G play for the first time since 2013-14.
Michigan will head on the road on Sunday on New Year's Day to face Wisconsin at 3pm.
