no wonder we hired Hunter Lochmann
Trey Burke was sitting in front of me on a flight from Las Vegas to Detroit today (I know cool story bro). I asked him if he knew what Caris was going to do and he thinks he is coming back to school. He couldn't have been any nicer.
You can't give a scholarship to Jaylen Brown or Kenny Williams even if LeVert leaves so long as you take Coach Beilein's statement that there will be no roster attrition at face value. Davis's scholarship offer is currently contingent on LeVert's scholarship being available by 2016, and you couldn't be sure of that if it were taken up by anyone other than a senior.
I know there are other ways Davis and either Williams or Brown could be on the roster together, but LeVert staying and Michigan being done with 2015 recruiting seems the most likely. I doubt Coach Beilein would essentially burn a 2015 scholarship by locking himself in with Davis. So, we have good news?
EDIT: I didn't think about the possibility of bringing Max back and using the 2015 opening (if LeVert leaves) that way. We have to allow for that.
Per numerous outlets, Michigan has started to look closely at 2016 G Kevin Huerter out of Shenendehowa High in New York. He's a 6'5" PG for his high school team, but plays more at off-guard for his AAU team, the Albany City Rocks. Apparently he blew up this past weekend at the EYBL and picked up a handful of offers from a few afterwards, including notables Iowa, Maryland, Miami (FL), and Xavier.
Reminds me a bit of MSU commit and one-time UM target Matt McQuaid. Huerter seems to have better handles than McQuaid and a more natural looking jumpshot (McQuaid's is goofy looking but definitely works), but McQuaid seems to be a better all-around athlete.
The other day I was checking out the highlight tapes of one of OSU's incoming bball recruits, Mickey Mitchell out of Plano West H.S. in Texas. I noticed that his teammates looked pretty talented as well. Turns out, as a Top 100 recruit, he's just the 3rd highest rated player on his team. His teammates, D.J. Hogg and Tyler Davis, are both borderline top 25 guys. Needless to say, they won the Texas state championship (although by only 2 points, at the buzzer).
That brings me to my question - what's the best high school basketball team you've ever seen? For the sake of fairness, I'm not going to count prep schools like Brewster (where Mitch, JaKarr Sampson, and a few others were on the same team) or Findlay Prep, who basically exist to send kids to play college ball.
Film below of the West Plano team.
UMhoops just posted an interesting article about the Basketball Awards Banquet. I found this part particularly interesting:
Michigan has no available scholarships, but Beilein is on the recruiting trail anyway in case the junior goes pro and frees a spot. The coach admitted the situation has left him in somewhat of a bind, but he isn’t too worried about it.
“It always works itself out,” Beilein said. “You go and you try to look at what you have and just say, ‘OK. Time will pass and we’ll have an answer.’ We’ll have the best answer you can get. Still, you have to think what’s best for the student-athlete. What’s best for Caris right now is to wait as long as we can to get him the most information.”
This weekend, Beilein will visit four-star prospect Kenny Williams in Virginia, and five-star forward Jaylen Brown is also considering Michigan. The coach also wouldn’t eliminate the possibility of Bielfeldt returning for a fifth year.
“There’s several wheels spinning,” Beilein said. “Where that all stops has yet to be determined.”
The graduate senior didn’t rule out a potential return to Michigan either.
“Right now I’m waiting to see if there’s an offer here (at U-M) next year,” Bielfeldt told MLive. “I have been talking to schools all over and just kind of figuring out what’s out there for me, who wants me and what the situations are.”
The Kenny Williams and Jaylen Brown part we all knew about but the fact that Beilfedt's retrurn is still a possibility is perplexing. Does this mean that there is another potential transfer? Is this just Belien covering his bases in case LeVert leaves and he strikes out on both Brown and Williams? Does anyone have any more info on this situation?
