finally people are complaining about us
Weekday action at Wilpon. The Wolverines finished a 6 game homestand by beating Central Michigan 5-3 to conclude a 5-1 stretch.
At the plate, Travis Maezes walked three times and singled in two runs. Drew Lugbauer went 3-4 and knocked in one. Cronenworth knocked in the other.
Michigan's 5th run came on a double steal. Benedetti took 2nd, Bivens stole home.
Starting pitching was excellent. Jayce Vancena started and went 3 innings, no hits no runs. Jaskie followed with 2 2/3, two hits and no runs. The Chips came back with a late rally before Benedetti and Bryan closed the door.
The Wolverines improve to 16-12. They head to Bloomington next to face Indiana.
Being from the SE Michigan area and regularly traveling across the border into Toledo and the surrounding area I've always been amazed at how when it comes to college football it's always been a split between Michigan and Ohio State. People across the border tend to lean more towards Ohio State naturally. This map shows as such:
BUT, when it comes to baseball the Toledo and surrounding area definitely leans towards the Tigers. Even people that like Ohio State. I thought they weren't supposed to give a damn for the whole state of Michigan? That's why when I see someone with an Tigers D logo and OSU block O on their back window it just kinda makes my skin crawl.
We're now 15-12 on the year.
Michigan Baseball (14-12, 2-4 B1G) picked up the rubber match win against Maryland (18-7, 4-2 B1G) today at Ray Fisher Stadium, winning 5-2.
Michigan blew Maryland out yesterday, winning 10-1 in game 2 of their doubleheader after dropping game 1, 3-1.
Michigan scored all of their runs in the first inning in this game via RBIs by Jackson Glines, Carmen Benedetti and a 3-run double by Kyle Jusick.
This was a pretty big series win for Michigan. Maryland is ranked as high as #17 in some polls, but are unranked in Baseball America. Very strong weekend after that disaster of an opening B1G weekend last week in Lincoln.
Maryland is also the school Michigan head coach Erik Bakich left behind to come here to become the head coach of the Wolverines in 2013.
So it's pretty fitting that Bakich picked up his 69th Michigan victory against his former team. This puts him at 9th among Michigan Baseball coaches in wins, and puts him past the baseball legend Branch Rickey in wins.
Branch Rickey is in the Baseball Hall of Fame and is known for breaking the color barrier in the MLB, when he brought Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Rickey coached Michigan from 1910-1913. He also attended the university.
After yesterday's series opener against Maryland was postponed, Michigan's first Big Ten game at Wilpon this season ended with a 3-1 loss.
For Michigan, their closer Jacob Cronenworth got the start and had a solid outing allowing 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 9. Unfortunately that walk advanced a runner to 2nd base who would score on a single, and one of the three hits was a home run.
Maryland starter Mike Shawaryn went 7 1/3, with 5 hits, 1 walk and 7 strikeouts, but finished with an erratic 8th allowing a leadoff double, a single and two hit batters.
That gave the Wolverines their best chance to make it a game, but Bruder popped out with the bases loaded.
They fall to 0-4 in the Big Ten.
