2010 recruiting
Friday Night Lights 2009: 9-15

As always, if you can point me to an article covering any of the commits' games. Do so in the comments. We were unable to make it out to any games ourselves last week, but may be able to drop in on a couple this week.
If you can help out finding articles on any of the commits, we'll try to make it as comprehensive as possible.
SC QB Cornelius Jones
The great name confusion of 2009 has ended by the way, as we now have pseudo-confirmation of the lack of "r" in Jones's first name.
Last week: Spartanburg falls to Sumter 34-21. Article 2. MGoUser Clarence Beeks gives yet another awesome breakdown of Jones's performance. Conelius threw 17/27 for 187 yards with a touchdown and a pick, while running 23 times for 53 yards and another score.
Conelius Jones continues to impress me with his arm, decision-making, and excellent play-action skills. As I've said consistently now, Jones is not all that fast (he's not slow, but he's more quick and shifty than fast), but what has become obvious is that this kid really has the potential to develop as a passer. He shows good presence in the pocket and makes good decisions with where to go with the ball (usually). However, he does tend to bail out and run sooner than he should sometimes, which indicates that he's not processing multiple reads consistently.
I highly recommend checking out the full text of Beeks's breakdown.
This week: Greenwood @ Spartanburg (2-2).

LA Slot WR Drew Dileo
Last week: Parkview Baptist takes down Arcadiana 31-14.
He was also an efficient 4-of-6, throwing for 59 yards, including a 35-yard toss to tailback Drew Dileo with 7:24 left for the Eagles' final score.
Something about that QB's stats screams "wishbone offense," though I guess we already knew that. Drew had 14 carries for 77 yards to go along with the receiving TD.
This week: Parkview Baptist (2-0) @ Church Point.
MI WR Ricardo Miller
Last week: Pioneer defeats Saline 36-17. MGoUser ArborBlue provided a game report. Ricardo had 3 catches for 48 yards and a (24-yard) touchdown. He also misjudged a wide open pass that should have been a 60-yard TD. For the record, Saline QB (and MSU commit) Joe Boisture was so horrible he got benched during the game. Miller photo appears courtesy of Lon Horwedel for AnnArbor.com.

OH WR Jerald Robinson
Last week: Canton South picks up their first win by taking down Ravenna, 28-19.
Two plays later, Canton South’s Jerald Robinson caught a Logan Bowles pass for a 54-yard touchdown and a 14-13 lead.
I believe that it Jerald's first touchdown on the year.
This week: Louisville @ Canton South (1-2).
MI WR Jeremy Jackson
Last week: Huron falls to Temperance Bedford 28-21.
This week: Huron (1-2) @ Monroe.

OH WR DJ Williamson

Last week: Avon Lake runs it up on Elyria, 48-15.
This week: Avon Lake (1-2) @ Olmstead.
OH DT Terry Talbott
Last week: Wayne falls to Glenville 57-28. Neither Talbott brother is mentioned in the game recap.
This week: Huber Heights (2-1) @ Trotwood-Madison.
PA DE Ken Wilkins
Last week: Trinity falls to Greensburg Salem 10-7. Recap article. The Trinity defense was very stout, save for a pass interference penalty in the endzone that ended up providing the deciding points on a QB sneak.
This week: Trinity (0-2) @ Thomas Jefferson.
PA DE Jordan Paskorz
Last week: Hampton falls to West Allegheny, 26-7.
This week: Hampton @ Shaler Area.
OH LB Antonio Kinard
Last week: The Leopards fall to Campbell, 14-6.
“We made a lot of mistakes,” said Whittaker. “Twice we turned the ball over inside the 20 and we had one TD called back [Antonio Kinard’s 38-yard pass interception in the early seconds of the game]. We blew three opportunities.”
This week: Struthers @ Liberty (2-1).
FL S Marvin Robinson
Last week: Lake Region is knocked off by Kathleen, 33-0.
This week: Sebring @ Lake Region.
OH CB Courtney Avery
Last week: Lexington falls to North Canton Hoover, 41-20. Avery was held to only 16 yards passing in the second half.
This week: Rice Consolidated @ Lexington.
OH CB Terrence Talbott
Last week: Wayne falls to Glenville 57-28. Neither Talbott brother is mentioned in the game recap.
This week: Huber Heights (2-1) @ Trotwood-Madison.
2011 OH CB Greg Brown
Prior to this week's game, Brown had 5 catches for 83 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Last week: Fremont Ross knocks off rival Tiffin Columbian 49-35. I highly recommend checking out that article, because it's heavily Brown-centric.
Brown caught touchdown passes of 39 and 29 yards while finishing with three grabs for 98 yards... "Greg is so versatile that he can hurt an opposing team in so many different ways and we're going to take advantage of that," Fremont Ross coach Derek Kidwell said... "I feel like I always have to step up," said Brown, who has verbally committed to attend Michigan in fall 2010 [sic]. "If I step up, then there's a good chance we're going to win."... Brown gave Ross a 64-yard kickoff return...
Second article that's not so Brown-y.This week: Cleveland Benedictine @ Fremont Ross (2-1).

Wednesday Recruitin'
All recruiting updates can be found on the Recruiting Board.
Happy Trails?

Michigan had long been considered at or near the top of FL OL Torrian Wilson's list, but Wilson has committed to Stanford. I wouldn't be surprised if he still took some visits, so he'll stay on the recruiting board for a little while longer.
Likely-similar results from the decision of FL RB Eduardo Clements. He's made up his mind, but for some reason (probably to annoy me) won't announce it until Signing Day. Michigan was his favorite as recently as a month ago, but I would guess he's picked somebody else.
The Distant Future. The Year 2011.
September 1st is the first day juniors can receive offers. A number of 2011 guys have gotten them thus far, and as I've noted, one of them has already committed to Michigan. Check out the commitment post on Greg Brown here.
Moving along to other juniors who have received offers, there a number that can be confirmed via free sources. The positions on some of these guys may not be definite quite yet, because jesus they're 16 years old.
FL RB Demetrius Hart was being kept in the dark on his offers, so he can focus on his football season. I can virtually gurantee you he got a Michigan offer, and he's considered a heavy Michigan lean. Hart is a top prospect, and is visiting this weekend (see below). I'm sure the coaches would be ecstatic if he made a commitment. Central Florida Varsity Prospects has video on Hart.
When I talked to MI WR DeAnthony Arnett in August, he had 3 unofficial offers. Offer Day came and went, and now he has 3 official offers ($, info in header). I'm willing to bet they're the same three - Michigan, MSU, and Eastern Michigan.
FL OL Tyler Moore received his Michigan offer. His dad played for Nebraska, so he's considered a virtual lock to join the Huskers down the road. Despite the M offer, they're not in his early top 4, and he plans to decide this fall.
AZ OL Christian Westerman has an official offer from the Wolverines. His dad also cryptically mentions that Christian likes snow. Might that be a hint that Michigan is near the top of his list? Maybe I'm reading into things a little too much.
MI OL Anthony Zettel has not yet received a MIchigan offer, but should he get one, he would probably end up wearing the maize and blue. He attended the Western Michigan game, and I believe is expected to be in town again this weekend.
FL DE/LB James Wilder should be one of the top prospects in Florida. He received a Michigan offer on September 1st, along with offers from the likes of Florida, West Virginia, and Miami (Yes That Miami). Rivals video:
(HT UMGoBlog)
OH DE Chris Rock also received his Michigan offer in the mail already. He admits only knowing about Ohio State, since he's grown up in Columbus. However, he is a former high school teammate of Wolverine Patrick Omameh (well, same high school - Omameh was a senior in Rock's freshman year).
OH LB Trey DePriest has a verbal offer from Michigan, and I'm sure he's gotten the written edition in the mail since that article was published nearly a week ago. He's a top prospect in Ohio, and grew up liking the Wolverines. He plans to take his time in making a commitment. GBMW scouted DePriest last week.
No word on an offer, but OH S Ron Tanner visited Michigan last week ($, info in header), and apparently really liked what he saw.
See below for a little more detail, but OH CB Doran Grant has received an official offer ($, info in header).
A 2011 recruiting board will be debuting sometime soon.
Visitin'

The Free Press has an article on visitors to last week's Western Michigan game (link is no-followed). Other than Dior Mathis, there were mostly current commits and junior prospects in attendance. Photo at right (courtesy of Josh Helmholdt in the Free Press) is 2011 OH CB Doran Grant. MGoBlog's own TomVH caught up with some of Michigan's commitments, and they gave him their reactions to the season-opening win.
VA LB Aramide Olaniyan has been a longtime Duke commitment, but he's been soft in that commitment basically the whole time. He still plans to take an official visit to Ann Arbor, as well (also of note from that article, FL CB Tony Grimes is down to M, Wisconsin, and Ole Miss). Two visits this fall/winter, one on his own dime? Sounds like the kid really likes Michigan, and might be a serious possibility for OMG SNAKE OILZ~!~!~! It's not like Duke is living up to their promise of being a team on the rise. Olaniyan comes in for some fluff from his high school coach as well:
“I've got two Division I line prospects and a center who's nastier than they are and he's just killing them. At one point, he just blew by two blockers and crushed the quarterback. He's the fastest kid you're ever going to block – literally.”
He plays DE for his high school, but is more of an LB at the next level.
MD RB Josh Furman will be in the house ($, info in header) when Michigan squares off against the Irish.
While we're talking visitors, I may as well mention that this weekend is huge for the hoops team as well. Dylan covers the particulars over at UMHoops.
Etc.
Maxpreps fluff on a number of Michigan targets. He may get more pub in Recruitin' posts than anyone outside of Devin Gardner and Seantrel Henderson, but how about some more on PA CB Cullen Christian? Game report from his team's season-opening loss, including video highlights of a pretty nice one-handed pick by Cullen. He'll visit UCLA soon. This is more FNL-y, but The Wolverine Blog has video from Jeremy Jackson's game last weekend.
Friday Night Lights 2009: 9-8
If you can help out finding articles on any of the commits, we'll try to make it as comprehensive as possible. We were only able to make it to 1 high school game this week (sorry to spoil you last week with 4 games), so that's listed at the top. In future weeks, the 2011 commits (of which there are currently 1) will be included as well.
MI RB Austin White
Last week: Stevenson lost to Howell 14-28. Austin rushed 16 times for 119 yards and 2 TD (12.44 YPC). He also caught 4 passes for 59 yards, and had a 53-yard touchdown grab erased due to penalty. Paul and I were there, so experience the glory of HD:
In all honesty, if Stevenson's coaches would have just given Austin the ball more (and you can't argue with his production), the Spartans would have had a much better chance to come away with a win.
This week: Stevenson (0-2) at Salem.

MI QB Devin Gardner
Last week: Game preview. Inkster lost to East Kentwood 52-33. From the sounds of it, Gardner's receivers did him no favors:
On two occasions in the first half, Gardner heaved up nice touch passes to the end zone only to see the ball slip through teammates fingertips and fall harmlessly to the turf.
Devin finished 19-30 passing for 389(!) yards. He also had a 66-yard rushing touchdown on the game's first play, and finished with 10 rushes for 102 yards with another touchdown (2 total).
This week: Inkster (0-2) has the week off.

Last week: Was expected to have a breakout performance. The vikings beat Northwestern 20-10.
Conelius Jones ran for 45 yards and a touchdown and threw for 125 yards and another score as Spartanburg traveled to Northwestern and knocked off the Trojans 20-10 Friday night.
No word on attempts.

This week: Harding (1-0-1) v. Akron Buchtel on Saturday evening.
OH OL Christian Pace
Last week: Avon Lake fell to Brunswick 7-24.
This week: Avon Lake (0-2) v. Elyria.
OH DT Terry Talbott
Last week: Wayne defeated Canton McKinley 27-14. There's no specific mention of Talbott, but the defense performed well:
Four big plays — including one on defense — catapulted the Warriors to a 27-14 victory over Canton McKinley...
Wayne’s defense unleashed a “trifecta” — sack, fumble and TD — as the Warriors forced four turnovers and improved to 2-0
After seeing how dominant he can be a week ago, I would be shocked if Terry wasn't directly responsible for some of that defensive wizardry.
This week: Huber Heights (2-0) v. Glenville on Saturday evening. This should be a hell of a game. I'd recommend checking it out, if you're in the area.
PA DE Ken Wilkins
Last week: Trinity falls 22-36 to powerhouse Canon-McMillan.
This week: Trinity (0-1) @ Greensburg Salem.
PA DE Jordan Paskorz
Last week: Hampton defeated Blackhawk 21-13.
This week: Hampton (1-0) v. West Allegheny.
OH LB Antonio Kinard
Last week: Liberty beats Niles 29-12. Kinard caught a 24-yard touchdown pass, and also came in for some praise from his coach:
Whittaker said Gutierrez and Michigan recruit Antonio Kinard are the heart of his defense.
“They were all-conference linebackers last year,” he said. “We’ve come to kind of expect them to make those types of impact plays and they have made many.”
This week: Liberty (2-0) @ Campbell.
FL S Marvin Robinson
Last week: Lake Region lost 0-9 to Winter Haven. Marvin had 20 tackles(!), in addition to a forced fumble and an interception. 43 yards on 8 carries (5.38 YPC).
This week: Lake Region (0-1) v. Kathleen.
OH CB Courtney Avery
Last week: Game preview. Lexington destroyed Shelby 42-6.
Senior QB Courtney Avery broke a couple of tackles and burst up the middle on a 54-yard TD run less than three minutes later.
Avery finished the game 14-26 passing for 202 yards, and he ran for 40 yards on 7 carries.
This week: Lexington @ Cameron.
OH CB Terrence Talbott
Last week: Wayne defeated Canton McKinley 27-14. There's no specific mention of (either) Talbott, but the defense performed well. See above for details.
This week: Huber Heights (2-0) v. Glenville on Saturday evening. This should be a hell of a game. I'd recommend checking it out, if you're in the area.
Wednesday Recruitin'
The 2010 Michigan Recruiting Board holds all the updates on prospects of interest.
Rankings, Rankings
Tom Lemming's top prospects list is generally pretty kind to M:
#1 Combo-passer Devin Gardner
#23 Tailback-slotback Austin White
#25 Tailback-slotback Tony Drake
#6 Big back Stephen Hopkins
#13 Wide receiver Ricardo Miller
#19 Wide receiver Jeremy Jackson
#20 Offensive guard Christian Pace
#24 Inside linebacker Antonio Kinard
#4 Safety Marvin Robinson
There are a bunch of other targets included on the list, obviously. While we're talking rankings, Rivals recently updated theirs, and say hello to the #1 QB in all the land:

That of course means I'm contractually obligated to point out the rockin' MGoBlog HD highlights of Gardner.
Official Visits

Cullen Christian's reported visit plans seem to change by the day, but for now, he's planning to visit only Michigan and UCLA, along with maaaybe a third school to be named later. He still intends to make a decision during his senior season. (Christian photo by Bob Donaldson of the Post-Gazette). His teammate, Brandon Ifill, will visit in September (likely along with Cullen), and says that the two prospects are no longer tied to the idea of going to the same school. How about a little pre-season fluff on their team, as well.
The Particularly Revealing Scout Header is becoming a staple of recruiting posts lately, and who am I to change that?
Maryland safety Josh Furman will be taking his first official visit on Sept. 12 to Michigan. “Michigan is showing a lot of interest,” Furman said. “I’m very curious to see what the campus is like and I can’t wait to see a game at the Big House. I also really like (wide receiver) coach Tony Dews. He’s a great guy and I just get a good feeling about him.” Although Furman still denies a leader...
The rest of the article is behind paywall, but jesus is that one informative header. So: Furman likes Michigan, and add him to the list for next weekend's visitors. Fluff on him, mostly concerned with his ability to run the ball.
VA LB Aramide Olaniyan has set up four of his official visits, one of which will be to Ann Arbor. His others will be to North Carolina, Duke, and UCLA. For his fifth and final visit, he's considering Stanford, Wake, and Vanderbilt (quite the student, no?). No word yet on which game he'll be attending.
Michigan is in the final 5 for CT LB Khairi Fortt, along with Penn State, Georgia, USC, and North Carolina. The article implies without explicitly stating that those will be the schools he officially visits, as well.
MI DE CJ Olaniyan talked with Rivals AMP:
Nothing earth-shattering. He wants to make a commitment by the middle of his season, and the two visits he's thought about so far are Notre Dame and Penn State. As far as Michigan goes, he likes the academics, and has been on campus for three unofficial visits.
He Who Has Amazing Name

Though Michigan's QB recruiting is probably all wrapped up, LA QB Munchie Legaux still likes the Wolverines. M has made his final three along with Baylor, Oregon, and Tulane (they must not be able to count very well in Louisiana, I guess), and seems to be still giving him some pretty good attention. The rest of the article is pretty M focused, so I suggest checking it out. Munchie himself says he might not be fast enough to play receiver, so bringing him in for a position switch is probably not what Michigan is going for. I would presume he's being given the attention in case of another decommitocalypse, a la last year. In addition, he looks like Vince Young with dreads. (Legaux photo by Susan Poag of the Times-Picayune).
Etc.
Michigan is still nominally in the running for CA RB/LB Anthony Barr, but when your finalists are 3 schools from your home state, your dad's alma mater, and Michigan, Michigan is probably the odd man out here. If he doesn't end up signing with the Irish, it will probably be with one of the Cali schools.
Michigan is still in the top group for FL RB Eduardo Clements, though Georgia is on top of the heap for now.
Brief MN OL Seantrel Henderson fluff. Here's some even more effusive fluff, this time with video.
Michigan is not in the top 4 for MI DT Johnathon Hankins. I think that ship may have sailed when he was too... hefty... to earn an offer in camp. He'll likely be removed soon.
Bill Kurelic thinks Michigan will end up with Dior Mathis, and Seantrel Henderson and Sharrif Floyd will go to Minnesota(!) and Florida, respectively.
There was also an article on Tony Grimes from the Miami Herald but you now must register (for free) to view it. Hey, great way to get me to not link to your paper, guys. Same with an article linked up on MGoBoard: Torrian Wilson got hurt last week, but it doesn't appear to be too serious.
Removed MD RB Marcus Coker, who will be a Hawkeye.

Friday Night Lights 2009: 9-1
Huge week for the Friday Night Lights feature, as nearly every Michigan commit kicked off the season this weekend, and Mgoblog was live and in person for four of the games (covering 6 of the commits). Players with MGoOriginal content will be at the top, and guys who haven't hit the field yet are towards the bottom. Without further ado, Friday Night Lights:
MI QB Devin Gardner
Last Week: Game Preview. Ann Arbor.com fluff. Inkster loses to Ann Arbor Pioneer 32-35. Article #2. Devin threw 10/14 for 97 yards and a touchdown, while running 16 times for 113 yards and a touchdown. See the MGoBlog review of Gardner, including a photo gallery and HD video.
This week: Inkster (0-1) @ East Kentwood on Thursday. MGoBlog might be in atendance. Hell, let's take a vote. Would you rather have more Devin video or some Austin White video from this coming Thursday?
MI WR Ricardo Miller
Last Week: Game Preview. Ann Arbor Pioneer defeats Inkster 35-32. Article #2. Ricardo caught 3 passes for 70 yards. Photo gallery and scouting report never really got published, because there was actually too much(!) content for MGoBlog to handle this weekend, so you'll have to suffer through the MgoHighlights:
This Week: Dexter @ Ann Arbor Pioneer (1-0). MGoBlog will either be at this game, or the Huron/Tecumseh game. Leave your preference in the comments.
OH WR Jerald Robinson
Last Week: Canton South fell to Dover 14-27. Jerald caught 2 passes for 6 yards, returned one kickoff for 15 yards, and made 1 solo tackle and 6 assisted tackles. See the MGoBlog report from the game, including video.
This Week: Canton South (0-1) @ Canfield.
MI WR/TE Jeremy Jackson
Last Week: Ann Arbor Huron fell to Chelsea 35-29. Jeremy had 6 receptions for 86 yards, including a 48-yarder. He also added 3 tackles and 6 assisted tackles from his free safety spot (where he actually looked pretty good, at least at the high school level). Original MGoHighlights:
This Week: Tecumseh @ Ann Arbor Huron (0-1). MGoBlog will either be at this game, or the Pioneer/Dexter game. Leave your preference in the comments.
OH DT Terry Talbott
Last Week: Wayne defeats Cincinnati Princeton 21-4. MGoBlog was there, and you can see the photos here:
We're still having a slight delay on the HD video, but it will be posted when available. Terry finished with 8.5 tackles, 4.5 for loss (18 yards). He also had 1.5 sacks (11 yards) and 2 QB hurries.

Last Week: Spartanburg defeats Union 35-0.
"Jones ran for touchdowns of 3, 1 and 3 yards and completed 6 of 7 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown."

As with last week, Clarence Beeks gives us the dish.
This Week: Spartanburg (1-1) @ Northwestern.

Last Week: Stevenson falls to crosstown rival Franklin 7-21. Austin has 14 carries for 64 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown for the Spartans' only points. Rivals has video of White's performance. Be forewarned, though - it caused my browser to lock up once.

The touchdown was a 53-yarder.

This Week: Dileo's season doesn't start until the 11th.
PA DE Ken Wilkins
Last Week: Season preview fluff. Individual preseason fluff:
"He's an unbelievable physical talent," Trinity coach Ed Dalton said. "He's very muscular, and he has a 28-inch waist. He looks like an NFL player today. He's not going to take a year in college to get that physical look. He already has it. He's blessed physically."
...
"[Committing early to Michigan] was a relief off my shoulders," Wilkins said. "I found out where I wanted to go, and there was no point in letting the pressure build up. It was a good position to be in to be wanted by all those schools, but I wanted to do what was best for me."
Trinity's regular season has not started yet.
This Week: Canon-McMillian @ Trinity.
PA DE Jordan Paskorz
Last Week: Season preview fluff. Individual preseason fluff:
A hybrid defensive end/linebacker, Paskorz has carved a reputation as one of the WPIAL's elite players. Various blog writers question how elite...
"Everyone is entitled to their own wrong opinions," DeMatteo said. "Honestly, I can only base mine from working with the kid, but it's hard to find a player of his caliber. He worked hard, he devoted time early in the morning and he didn't miss workouts [ed - too soon?]. Jordan has been a quiet leader, and at least to me, he's exemplified what a Division I player should be."
What isn't questioned is Paskorz's athleticism. His muscular frame -- and the potential to add more bulk -- is evident. He runs a 40-yard dash in about 4.7 seconds and can dunk a basketball from a standing position. Paskorz, who also plays tight end, had nine sacks for a Talbots squad that struggled to a 1-8 finish in 2008.
This Week: Hampton @ Blackhawk
FL S Marvin Robinson
Last Week: Season preview fluff:
Anchoring that secondary will be senior safety Marvin Robinson, who Reynolds called "one of the best players in the school's history."
The article goes on to mention that he is being recruited by schools like Ohio State and Michigan. OK, but which one has he committed to, moron?
This Week: Lake Region @ Winter Haven.
Devin Gardner is Better Than You
Just trust me on this one.

Though his Inkster team fell to Ann Arbor Pioneer by a score of 35-32, Devin Gardner showed last night why he is considered one of the top prospects in the nation. After seeing 4.5 high school football games over the course of three days, it was painfully obvious which player was the best: Devin Gardner. After Friday's Huber Heights Wayne game, I walked away impressed with QB Braxton Miller, and fully understood why he is considered the top dual threat QB in the 2011 class. However, Gardner was on a whole different level, with game-changing ability that can't even be quantified at times. The best thing to do is simply go to the...
Video Evidence (High Def, baby!):
Gardner's final statline was approximately 10/13 passing for 97 yards and a touchdown, and 16 carries for 113 yards and another touchdown. He also had two incomplete passes on two-point conversions, and one successful run for 2 points. Gardner was hurt in the fourth quarter on a dive toward the pylon, and exited the game for two plays. However, as I tweeted, "On the third down he rose again," passing for a touchdown on fourth and goal.

MGoBlog hopes to scout more Inkster games this year, and if nothing else, there's excitement practically guaranteed.
