Twitter discussion on player speed
Andy Staples posted the following response link http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050418/news_1s18forty.html to a report that a San Diego area player ran a 4.28. I know 40 times are kind of ridiculous any more, but this article from 2005 really brings it into context just how ridiculous these times are. The piece actually breaks down Roid Aided Ben Johnson's World Record 100m from the Olympics.
Timing officials have since broken down that famed race into 10-meter increments, and Johnson was so preposterously fast that he went through 50 meters in 5.52 seconds and 60 meters in 6.37 – both under the current world records at those distances. He went through 40 yards that day in 4.38 seconds.
So when we see these ridiculous low times that kids run these days they are just that RIDICULOUS! (Well except for anything Denard does, of course!)
Wikipedia Win
So I'm procrastinating and reading the offense UFR when I decide that I'm curious to check if wikipedia has any articles on speed--not the classic 90s action movie, the amphetamine, or your run-of-the-mill rate of d/t, but perhaps something on the physiology behind the varying ability of an organism to move fast, especially when that ability varies within a species, specifically humans. Basically, a "science of sports" type of article. Misguided and stupid? Perhaps, but just let it be.
Anyway, I was scrolling down the wikipedia article on speed as in d/t to the "See Also" section when I noticed that someone (not myself, sadly) made a nice addition to the list...

1948 Rose Bowl offense
So I just watched my late father's favorite team, the 1948 Michigan Rose Bowl team that thumped USC 49-0 on Wolverine Historian.
What a fabulous offense! the late shift, the ball movement, the speed and deception.......and plenty of passing. Not that I dont love RR's offense, but who could stop this s*&t today?
Check it out. Fun, fun, fun.
One More Reason Ohio Sucks
Just one more reason Ohio sucks. Now they don't even need proof to pull over people with Michigan plates.
Forcier Speed Quick Fix
Surprised no one has mentioned this yet but...
Watching the Spring Scrimmage Video, its clear to me that if Tate just wore shoes that weren't way to big for him, I think he'd be a hell of a lot faster! Take a look at how big those shoes are. It reminds of the old Bozo the Clown's shoes. It seems like an easy quick fix to me. What say you?
OT: Willie Gault
I'm not sure about the NFL part, but look at how well he ran in 2006:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/jeff_pearlman/03/12/willie...
In case you're short of time:
"... in 2006 set a world record of 10.72 seconds in the master's 100 meters for athletes aged 45 to 49 (Two years later, Gault set a new 200-meter world record of 21.80 seconds in the 45-49 age group)..."
That's crazy. He would have been just behind Denard's current time just a few years ago.
