With Michigan's 2013 options dwindling and recent news that Michigan might be getting back into the mix with Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III, this week's scouting report is on Hargreaves. He has a ton of athleticism. However, of the cornerbacks offered by Michigan in this recruiting cycle, he's one of the least physical. I would expect him to play field corner for a team like Michigan.
I put a halt to my scouting reports several weeks ago because most recruits are off the board or unlikely to choose Michigan. However, there are a couple more who have listed serious interest in Michigan, so I'll continue the series for at least a couple more entires before moving on to 2014 kids.
This week I took a look at Leon McQuay III. There are a lot of good safeties in the country. McQuay is one of them, although perhaps not in that top tier. I wrote last year that I think Jarrod Wilson is Michigan's best free safety recruit in a long time. If McQuay were to commit to Michigan, that would give us a second very good safety prospect in the pipeline.
I wrote up a scouting report on Phoenix (AZ) Brophy Prep wide receiver Devon Allen. Most of us have seen the reports on his track speed. He can definitely scoot. He's not very shifty, but with a couple big leapers (who aren't extremely fast) in Jaron Dukes and Csont'e York, Allen would be a good complement to open up some underneath routes and stretch the defense.
This week's scouting report is on Cordova (TN) St. Benedict running back Jordan Wilkins, who seems to be a high priority for the coaching staff now that Ty Isaac has committed to USC. There's not a whole lot to dislike about Wilkins. He seems to be a very capable back and he's a little more elusive than most of the other Michigan targets - Wyatt Shallman, DeVeon Smith, and Derrick Green. For that reason and for his receiving ability, I think Wilkins is the most Isaac-like back Michigan is targeting. If Isaac is the prototype that Michigan wants, Wilkins seems to be the next most logical choice.
This week's scouting report is on Chandler (AZ) Hamilton cornerback Cole Luke, who has expressed interest in visiting Ann Arbor. The coaches want another corner, and Luke seems like a very solid option. He's good in almost all aspects of the game, and I think he could play some significant minutes by 2014 if he were to commit.
This week's scouting report is on Placer (CA) Placer defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes. There aren't many defensive tackles in this class who are as athletic as Vanderdoes (although Montravius Adams comes to mind), but he needs a lot of work on technique. Right now he's basically just a big, fast dude out there tossing smaller guys around. He could be one of those guys who's a first or second round pick in a few years, or he might be one of those guys who never learns proper technique and gets buried on the depth chart somewhere.
