Larry Foote: "I want to be a Cardinal"

According to this and this, Larry Foote has made his preferences clear as to where he wants to play next year.

"I'm begging. I want to get back to a winner. I feel more comfortable with a 3-4 (defense). Pittsburgh wants me back but I want to be a Cardinal and hopefully we can get it done. First of of all, they're winning. I know 'Whiz'. I know his pedigree, what type of coach he is, the talent they have here. They have a good chance of going back to the Super Bowl."

LB Coach Candidates

So, Heater is off the board. Who else in on our list? I haven't heard much from the rumor mill here.

I have a suggestion though: given that a lot of people are buzzing about bringing in an assistant who can really recruit, at the expense of more competency in LB coaching, why not focus on an ex-Wolverine LB who has NFL experience? It seems that, of late, a lot of the big-time recruiters among the assistant coach ranks are younger guys who have played pro ball. Wouldn't it make sense to give someone like Larry Foote a look (contract up with Lions, but only 29) or Ian Gold? These guys can talk about what it takes to play in the NFL and that spells credibility with recruits. Who knows, they might be able to coach up some LB skills, too.

Michigan Wins a Super Bowl

As has been advertised pretty much everywhere within a 40 mile radius of the borders of Michigan (and we're a peninsula so that's pissing a whooooooole lotta people off), UofM had seven players representing the Wolverines in the Super Bowl.

Those seven include:
Pittsburgh's linebackers Larry Foote and LaMarr Woodley and, from the Arizona Cardinals, defensive tackles Alan Branch and Gabe Watson, wide receiver and punt returner Steve Breaston, linebacker Victor Hobson and tight end Jerame Tuman.

Several different message boards have seen the disclaimer "Why bring them up? None of them won a NC or BCS bowl!" First off: shut up. Second of all: your mom just yelled down the steps, your Hot Pockets are ready. Tuman was on the '97 team and is, according to the UM haters, still looking for a Nebraska player to merge his NC ring with so that he, in fact, will not have a .5 Championship.

Michigan's seven players topped all other football programs represented in the Super Bowl. Other programs with three or more players included:
Florida State (5), Texas (4), Alabama (4), Illinois (4), UCLA (3!), BYU (3), Arizona State (3), USC (3), Virginia (3), PSU (3), LSU (3), N Carolina (3), Minnesota (3), Miami (3),

Ohio State had 1. Supposedly he did something important, I dunno. I missed it because I was too busy going upstairs to get my Hot Pockets.

Foote on WDFN: Rodriguez building dynasty, Barwis a freak

by Jonathan Oosting | MLive.com
Friday July 25, 2008, 6:08 PM

Former University of Michigan linebacker Larry Foote spent hisoffseason working out in Ann Arbor with the new Rich Rodriguez regime, and he liked what he saw.

"It's gonna be a different team this year," he said Friday toWDFN-AM's Stoney and Wojo on their annual Radiothon. "They still need alittle more talent, but they're going to shock a lot of people thisyear just by the mental and physical conditioning they're doing."

"I'm telling you, it's going to be a dynasty created."

Foote, who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers inthe NFL, was joined in Ann Arbor by a number of former U-M players —including Braylon Edwards, James Hall and, surprisingly, TyroneWheatley — and spent considerable time working under new strength andconditioning coach Mike Barwis.

"He's a freak," Foote said of Barwis, who doggedly challenged him tobeat his running times. "He's a little nutso. He used to do theultimate fighting, so the guys got some screws loose."

Listen to the full interview to hear Foote talk about his dreamabout the Detroit Lions' record (it wasn't a nightmare), his thoughtson the Steelers' upcoming season and the Michigan State "gremlins" thatkeep messing with his phone:
