B1G's Best Asst. Coach Recruiters (Rivals)

Here's an interesting Rivals article (link). Highlights!

  • Obviously: OSU and Michigan have the best recruiters. You probably know all about Michigan's body of work, but OSU was admittedly impressive in Texas and Georgia. They secured the #1 Texan and took a 4 star running back wanted by Texas/Oregon. They also beat out 'Bama and Georgia for a 5 star Georgian linebacker.
  • Also expected: Fred Jackson's recruiting prowess in Detroit is like Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin, but cleaner  (This is almost not an exaggeration.)
  • Greg Mattison's work all over the country gets mentioned. He's credited for securing Poggi from the Crimson Temptress, but you probably knew that already.
  • I think Indiana's continued recruiting successes are the most noteworthy. They pulled a couple 4 star prospects from the Hoosier State--but also a 4 star out of Georgia.  Indy raiding the SEC is pretty wild.
  • Jerry Montgomery didn't make the list. These things probably vary by year, and I don't think it's a strong indication of anything in particular, but it's a relevant omission for Michigan fans.
  • Frosting should come in two varieties: Chuck E. Cheese-style and the kind made with cream cheese. Also, all pie crusts should be made of graham crackers.

Fitz being "prepared" to play Bama

According to an AA.com article, no decision on Fitz has been made yet, but according to Fred Jackson, Hoke said to prepare Fitz as if he was going to play the season opener. Both Fitz and Clark return to practice today. Interesting to see how this thing plays out.

"Brady just said to prepare him, and that’s what we’re doing," running backs coach Fred Jackson said Sunday during the team's media day.

Lunchtime Links from Adam Rittenberg

There are three articles about Michigan in Adam Rittenberg's "Big Ten lunchtime links."  The articles are on Fred Jackson, Martavious Odoms and five position battles for the Sugar Bowl.  Nothing ground breaking but Michigan football news nonetheless.

They are easy enough to get to but some may not check ESPN regularly.

Thomas Rawls unable to redshirt?

  • when is a stupid redshirt not a stupid redshirt?

On ESPN's Michigan site there is an article assesing Michigan's RB play this season. It points on some things that "worked" and some that didn't. Specifically it notes that:

Perhaps it wasn't worth it to burn an entire season for 13 carries.

So that got me thinking...Isn't it possible he could still be eligable for a medical redshirt? I know the rules are a bit wonky (specially since we have to sweat out Gardner's) but a little bit of internet research returned the following:

To receive a medical hardship waiver - in any sport - the injury must limit the student-athlete’s participation to no more than 20 percent of the team’s contests (rounded to the next whole number), with all participation occurring in the first half of the season.

Therefore, for a football player, the maximum number of games that he can play in and still receive a medical hardship waiver is three (20 percent of 11 equals 2.2, which is rounded up to 3), and none of his time on the field can occur after the fifth game (the sixth game of an eleven game season is considered in the second half of the season).

In the case of a 12 game regular season (ie. Michigan 2011), none of the player's time on the field can occur after the sixth game.  The seventh game of a 12 game season is considered in the second half of the season.

Does anyone know if that's accurate? If it is, Rawls was still technically eligible after his 10 carries against Minny (assuming he came down with "an injury"), but it looks like his 1 carry against Purdue is going to cost him a full year of eligibility.

I remember reading somewhere that the staff told Rawls he wouldn't reshirt but was it really worth it for one carry?

Is it possible they played him knowing he'd reshirt next season?

Was he THAT good that the staff needed to get him on the field?

I hold Hoke in incredibly high regard, and I'm certain he didn't just goof, so what's the deal?

Did I miss something?

Fred Jackson Facts

In Brian's post today, he discussed longtime runningbacks coach Fred Jackson and his ability to survive a nuclear winter. This fact got me thinking of other Fred Jackson facts that I would like to share with you. Of course, I am not as awesome as Fred Jackson so I don't know all the facts. Hopefully many fellow MGO-Users can inform the community about Fred Jackson facts I have overlooked.

  • Fred Jackson pioneered the forward pass
  • Fred Jackson brought the winged helmet to Michigan
  • Fred Jackson can bench press as much as Jake Long
  • Fred Jackson's sports knowledge knows no boundaries. He trained Darius Morris all summer on the finer points of dribble penetration
  • The Big Chill was Fred Jackson's idea
  • So was YouTube

So are there any other Fred Jackson facts I have missed?
