Who would be in a Michigan Football Ring of Honor?
[Ed-M: Bump'ed like Elliott]
Brian got me thinking about who deserves to be in a Michigan ring of honor, so I did the only thing I know: Dump a bunch of data into a spreadsheet and rank them arbitrarily. I gave a point for being the College Hall of Fame, Michigan's Hall of Honor, Michigan retiring their number, points equal to the number of years being an All American, being in the top four in the Heisman (another 2 for winning it), and up to a point for winning other post-season awards. One could include other considerations, such as championships, captaincy, or being President of the United States.
The table below presents the data, sorted first by points and then year.
Some comments:
I would think anyone Chappuis and above deserves to be in.
I included only some 2-point guys of interest in the table below, most of whom aren't in Michigan's Hall of Honor or the Hall of Fame.
Coaches aren't included, except Kipke who is there because of his playing, though I don't know how much of his playing versus coaching got him in the Hall of Fame.
Why is Benbrook not in Michigan's Hall of Honor?
Obviously newer guys benefit from the various awards now available. The Heisman was first awarded in 1935. I would think Heston could have won it.
In 1939 Harmon finished 2nd in the Heisman voting to Nile Kinnick before winning it in 1940.
The All of American data are a bit surprising. Gerald Ford isn't listed. I had thought Carter was a three-year All American. There may be other surprises. I used a list from the NCAA (data source below), which made it easy, but the list may be flawed.
| Player | Yrs | HoF | MHoH | # | All Am | Heisman | Awards |

Interview with an icon: Desmond Howard - Omaha.com
The Omaha World Herald's Nebraska football blog, Big Red Today, recently interviewed U-M legend Desmond Howard as part of their ongoing Big Ten Roundup. Never short of an opinion, Howard shares his thoughts on a wide range of topics including Jim Tressel, NCAA rules, Reggie Bush, and Michigan's coaching change.
On Michigan's transition with Brady Hoke:
I don't think Rich Rodriguez was a bad coach. I don't think he was a bad guy. He did the best he could. It just wasn't a good fit. I think Brady Hoke is a much better fit. He understands the culture. He's coached here before. I think it's his dream job. You want someone there that pretty much wants to die there. This is like their end game. I believe that's how Brady Hoke feels about the Michigan job. He was a guy who said he would've walked from San Diego State to Ann Arbor. That's kind of what you want in that position.

I Wore 21: The Legend of Desmond Howard - September 10, 2011 Release

Huh, I wonder why they chose that date? Note, this was already posted in a post about a month ago and thought it should have its own thread.
Coolio = Amani Toomer
OK, to my knowledge this has never come up:
That is the video for Coolio's single "1-2-3-4 (Sumpin' New)" from 1996. When I saw it, I immediately noticed Mr. Ivey is wearing a 1995 Nike Michigan home jersey #18, which would make it Amani Toomer. It would also make it one of the earliest Nike Michigan replica jerseys to feature the swoosh. (He looks to have the tackle twill model rather than the screenpressed.)
But wait, at both 0:27 and 0:54, we see that one of Coolio's posse is rocking a #21 white Michigan road jersey. I do not see the swoosh on it, so I am going to presume that this is a Howard homage rather than a Biakabatuka, although the video would have been likely shot post-1995 Ohio State game, so perhaps it is a 313 shout out.
Anyway, since it had never come up to my knowledge, here it is. Enjoy your Thursday afternoon. Because there ain't no party like a Big House party because a Big House party don't stop.
Desmond and Shoelace are just fine
So there was some definite angst here when Desmond spoke out at a conference and used Denard as an example of the entitlement that the fans and media give to athletes (paraphrased as to what I hope/think he meant)
Desmond's twitter feed shows that the two of them are just fine:
Desmond Howard Owns an OSU Twoll
On a very quiet Easter Sunday, here's a little humor for you while you watch the Tigers attempt to sweep the ChiSox.
Desmond Howard was innocently doing his thing on Twitter earlier today:
desmond_howard How do you judge the character or a person? Give an example or a quote that best describes your feelings/thoughts
desmond_howard One can easily judge the character of a person by the way they treat people who can do nothing for them.
TheZinnMaster: @desmond_howard well if your [sic] from Ohio and went to mich that says alot [sic] about your character.
To which Desmond replies:
desmond_howard Says I made a GREAT decision RT @TheZinnMaster: @desmond_howard well if your from Ohio and went to mich that says alot about your character.
K_Herbstreit: @desmond_howard @TheZinnMaster even on easter they don't take a break. Haha!
Desmond's new buddy comes back with this attempt to smooth things over:
TheZinnMaster @K_Herbstreit @desmond_howard My hate for mi*hign aside. College Gameday is the best show on tv. Love it!
desmond_howard I give u credit 4 admitting Ur a hater RT @TheZinnMaster: @desmond_howard My hate 4 Mich aside.College Gameday is the best show on tv.Luv it!
TheZinnMaster @desmond_howard 7 straight baby!
desmond_howard Congrats, you should tat that on your forehead. LMAO! RT @TheZinnMaster: @desmond_howard 7 straight baby!
Moral of the story: You will lose if you mess with #21.
